Going to Israel Nov 2023. Just received this Bible. I just love the vintage look to this Bible. Font is big enough for my 56 year old eyes. Very readable. Great “transition” notes and illustrations throughout. Thanks for showing the dates in the Cambridge. I have that as well, so I’ll check that out for comparison. Thanks again Grant. 👍🙏🏻

This is an interesting idea, but I think it is really held back by the lack of deuterocannonical books. I mean, if they're going to have a whole section on the period between the testaments, why not include at least 1 Maccabees? Even if they don't believe it to be scripture, it's an important historical document that helps explain a lot of the changes in the period between Malachi and Matthew. On a similar note, it's a shame the NKJV doesn't have an option with the apocryphal like the old King James did. Anyway, thanks for the great video, and a late Merry Christmas.

Hi Grant, please can you review the Crossway ESV New Testament with Psalms & Proverbs that you feature in your NJKV Flipback New Testament video? Jonny - if you don't mind a relatively quick video, without the detailed measurements (e.g., line and word counts), I could post one in the very near future. The key points I would make are: The paper is decently opaque with a rough surface, so no sheen. The font is in the 6.5 to 7 pt range. It's tiny but printed well - nice and dark. The text block is sewn. Paper paste-down. No maps, concordance, ribbon marker. Black and white head and tail bands. Brief book intros. My copy was printed in 2010 with the 2007 ESV text. I think the cover is imitation leather. After reading that, if you're still interested in it and would like me to post a video, let me know.

Thanks for commenting, Láďa! This is the only chronological Bible I own, but if I come across a CSB Chronological Bible, a comparison is definitely in order. I didn't dwell much on the editors' decisions regarding the arrangement of material, since it seems like educated guesswork to me. I find the idea of a chronological Bible interesting, but I find myself distrusting the accuracy of the results. I appreciate that the introduction to this study Bible acknowledges that the editors arranged the texts according to when they are ostensibly set without regard to when they were actually written, but the obvious downside to that approach is that it doesn't necessarily depict the Israelite faith as it actually developed. If the superscriptions in the Psalms are unreliable, for instance, then the placement of certain Psalms in the text of 2 Samuel is potentially intrusive and misleading. (Then again, could you imagine a Mainline Protestant chronological Bible that separates the purported JE source in Genesis from the later P source?)

I am no expert since I passed my final Old Testament exams I would have two points. When it comes different sources, it is a huge mess. Check, for example, Zenger and his scheme and I have seen some way more complex ones with dozens of sources. Nobody really knows when particular OT books were written. This is not a place for long discussions but a single example. Let us suppose you wrote a book in 1600s and you used the word "admire." My job today is to make a copy of your book and since I want to make it easily understandable to people today I would replace your word with "marvel" or "wonder." My copy gets copied and survives. 2 thousands years from now a scholar comes and says that you book is by no means from 1600s because had it been so you would have used "admire" and not "wonder." Now, we have almost no idea about the history of the OT text for centuries. We don`t know for sure what their vocabulary was in different centuries (we don`t even know how they pronounced words). A similar cathegory to the above are, for example, Persian words. Again, we do not know whether they were used originally (which might say something) or only used to replace some obsolete words. It`s good to remember that they did not have any Merriam-Webster to find ten different meanings of a rowd, including those archais or obsolete.

This is well put together. This is a specialty Bible and probably won't be for everyone. Nevertheless, it's a good Bible to have as well as an Archaeology Study Bible. It might be a little difficult to navigate, but seeing it's a specialty Bible that is okay as it's unlikely to be someone's everyday Bible. Very interesting Bible though. For a 36 to 40 GSM paper Bible probably, there seems to be some ghosting. From watching the video, had you not said the chapter numbers were red, I would not have know. It seemed all black to me. Maybe it's because I have some difficulty with red letters. This is nonetheless a very good Bible to have in one's library. I'm appreciating single column Bibles more each day. I've long ditched verse-by-verse for paragraph settings as context is always king and somehow paragraphs helps a lot better with reading in context than in isolation which has caused many erroneous doctrines to be birthed. Since the NKJV is normally paragraph setting and I've been using it most of my life up to this year when I transitioned to the ESV, which also is a paragraph setting, I appreciate this layout much more. Now the single column is growing on me to the point that I only read from it nowadays. It makes longer periods of reading easier and I can set my own pace as I read along. Navigation isn't a problem for me especially if you have larger and embolden verse numbers (I'm hoping to get my hands on the ESV Preaching Bible paragraph version). Great review of what looks a beautiful Bible and one that should be added to one's library. By the way, what make and model pencil is that you use in the video? I'm looking for a good mechanical pencil to do my writings in my Bible as for me it's not permanent but can be erased if mistakes are made or if one comes into greater understanding of the particular passage. Plus since the graphite lead won't fade either, it will outlast me even if I live out the normal time that the Bible give which is over 30 years from now.
@RGrantJones
@RGrantJones 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting, Edward! The red ink used for headings and chapter numbers is very dark. If the words of Christ in red letter editions were always that dark and uniform, I wouldn't complain about them. The pencil is a Pentel GraphGear 500 PG523. It takes 0.3 mm lead.

@@RGrantJones Thank you for your response. I was looking at the Pentel Twist Erase III, using a 0.7 lead. I was sort researching which lead size was best for writing and came up with 0.7. Prior that I had not known that there was a 0.3 lead. His well does it write? Does it break easily? Would you consider it better than a 0.7 especially for writing in a Bible?
@RGrantJones
@RGrantJones 2 жыл бұрын
@@edwardgraham9443 - 0.3 mm does break fairly easily, but breaks are rare once you get used to using it. Keep the pressure down and the exposed lead short. I've used 0.5 mm most of my life, but I prefer 0.3 mm these days because I can write small characters and distinctly. I think if I tried 0.7 mm, I would find I have to write in characters that are too large for the available space.

There are a number of things I like about this bible, mostly regarding it's print. I would find the historical information interesting. What I wouldn't want is to be reading a certain book or account and then suddenly to find myself in a different part of the bible. I would rather they had a center column with cross-references. Additionally, they do not include the books which are included in the Septuagint and are recognized by both the Latin and Eastern Church as canonical. So, this bible is incomplete from that standpoint. This is one of those contradictions I see from those who hold the 'King James only' view. They may say that even the KJV is slowly being corrupted and you need to have a Pure Cambridge Edition. I have the electronic version of this and it doesn't contain the additional bible books of the Septuagint which were also part of the original KJV. So the Pure Cambridge Edition doesn't produce what the translators originally included either.
@RGrantJones
@RGrantJones 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting, Craig! I agree with you about the print -- and I wouldn't complain if Nelson were to produce an edition with a few additional books. Unfortunately, as far as I know, the NKJV is a strictly 66-book translation. The ESV would be a good candidate for a broader chronological study Bible.
