The first of four videos that will explore Musketry in the British Army of 1914. Although mostly an historical background clip, it does, nevertheless, serve as an important preamble to understanding the truths and realities of the era.

When it comes to Schools of Musketry in 1914/15, I always think of the Dublin School where, as a newly promoted Lt. Colonel on rejoining the colours, Frank Bourne, the Colour Sergeant at Rorke's Drift, became the camp's deputy commander. Another brilliant evocation of the age Rob. Hi,The quality of these little productions is fabulous, far exceeding that which we have come to expect on KZbin.The information is clearly and concisely presented. The diction and use of language excellent, and a hint of humour to cap it off.It strikes a balance between bookish technicality, colonial history and general interest. Above all it is insightful.I have a considerable interest in the subject and own much of what is studied but always discover something new and unexpected.It is a little unusual to find historical knowledge combined with practical expertise in handling firearms.Well doneAlan

I read years ago that one of the problems in South Africa was that Enfield/Metford barrels were cut with left hand twist rifling whereas Mausers are right hand twist. Whilst ok in the northern hemisphere the left hand twist rifling suffered from excessive lateral drift in the southern . There were additional factors which made British marksmanship so outstanding in WW1,Haldane's reforms and the creation of the Territorial Army in 1908 which encouraged skill at arms and marksmanship and the popularity of small-bore and bell target shooting which meant that many were already familiar with the basics of marksmanship. Another super video.
@britishmuzzleloaders
@britishmuzzleloaders 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Christopher. There were no fixes promulgated for Metford barrels in the list of changes... there were for Enfield barrels. What does that tell you?.. :-).... While shooting was inexorably linked to the Volunteers and, by direct lineage, the Territorial Force, a quick glance at the annual shooting qualification of the TF as compared with the Regular army will show but a fraction of the practices and a fraction of the number of rounds shot.... quite an inferior standard.

Came here at the suggestion of “Bloke on the range” and I have to say your channel is quickly becoming one of my favorites. Very informative and cuts through the bs many channels include when trying to show off their preferred version of history. I do have to say that the amount of ammo allotted being so low was just shocking to me as a veteran of the last few years.

Great video. I like the extract from 'Very Exceptional Soldiers' and the interview with L/Cpl George Rippon 2/KOYLI shown on BBC 1 in 1984. In the interview, L/Cpl Rippon indirectly refers to the Field Service Regulations 1909 which emphasised the need for rapid and accurate marksmanship (as influenced by Lieutenant General Sir Douglas Haig) combined with physical fitness. His battalion served with distinction as part of II Corps under the command of Lieutenant General Sir Horace Smith-Dorrien at the Battle of Le Cateau during the famous retreat from Mons.

I got back in sunday night and wanted to let you know that Newville was AWESOME, I was with the 29th AEF and we attacked the CP trenches right at dusk, and whole valley was shrouded in smoke from a combination of mortars and some farmers brush piles behind the CP lines and it was EERIE, as you could hear screaming and see muzzle flashes and hear the french singing as they began their assault. Then the bagpipes, and the CP trenches where lit as mortar fire and assault squads from the 42nd CEF black watch began their rushes. We were taking a knee in the treeline behind the french trenches that overlooked the CP, and the word came down the line to make ready. My buddy looked at me and asked if I was nervous, and I couldn't even say anything. I honestly felt like my heart was going to come out of my tunic, and my hands were shaking. My buddy was going to take point and only had a side arm and I had ol' Eddystone 673 and 48 grenades in satchels we'd made from sandbags and rope. The LT walked past and turned, pulled his sidearm and thanked us for what we where about to do, and then gave the word to our Sergent, and the assault began. We moved up and across the French trenches and through their wire, the french sentries wished us well and slapped our shoulders , "Bonn Chaunce!" and "Que deu vous benisse" and as we come to a field of short grass we could see the german wire and small farmhouse destroyed by shelling, we began to sprint! The field hadn't been tilled, but had the small undulations and as we ran faster I was tripped up and on my face, but before I could get up myself two arms had pulled me up and I was running again and we hit cover in a shell hole and I began feeding my buddy grenades as I covered him with rifle fire, and we were in the wire, our corporal was behind us and I heard his twang and we where in the trench stepping over german bodies and pushing the attack forward. Our LT grabbed the corporal and assigned us to secure the flank but to stay were he could grab us if needed - it was only a few minutes later that he yelled "FIRST SQUAD" and told the corporal we where taking too many hits and we needed to get in there, and while above ground the smoke layed thin, in the trench it was thick as pea soup and combat raged on, the LT grabbed myself for an assault team but grabbed me at the last minute when the defenders surrendered, and send me with a 42nd CEF man to clear a paticularly stiff corner, and we moved up my corporal joined us and we hit the defenders with grenades and rifle fire, and thinking we had cleared the corner moved up just to get mowed down by a German machine gun that had been evacuated back to protect their lines. We were casualties at this point and were escorted back to the Allied casualty clearing station at the blown in farmhouse to catch our breath, the attack ended finally about 45 minutes later at 11:25, we had been in combat for nearly 3 hours and it seemed like minutes. after all the combat operations were completed we met man of the Germans and Canadians and Australians and British and French and we shook hands and wished each other luck and thanked each other for being such good sports and I was heard many times how they hoped to have me back the next year as I was such a good "target". It was an awesome weekend.

I had no idea lol! many of the guys in our group are / were active duty military and when it gets hot I think they get as excited as the rest of us. I honestly have a MUCH MUCH greater appreciation for the men that actually did it "for realz" and despite the simulation nature of it, when you're actually running into that you get a sense for what the guys in the accounts talk about, like moving and not feeling yourself running and the training taking over, I mean I wasn't army but we had a short learning course and there where moments that I caught myself not even thinking, just doing, if you know what I mean. When I woke up sunday morning to get ready to go home and peeled of my uniform, my boots had 1/8th inch of mud on the soles and I was full body sore. it was awesome. Thank you again!

A fascinating video. You are right in your assessment that the use of a rifle or particular tactic need to be assesssed in context of time, place and the background of those who developed the doctrines used. I hadn't put together the British experiences in the Boer War versus their performance in 1914. The use of rapid fire and good marksmanship didn't just spring from thin air, and you video shows the connection and deveopment involved. Looking forward to future editions.

No problem, I keep checking on you mate. Currently waiting delivery of a Schmidt-Rubin 1896/11 in 7.5x55 Swiss. Made in 1906. The Swiss may never have fought a modern war but their manufacturing records are super accurate! I may just risk a post in Sporting Rifles and Other Old Guns as it is a rifle of historic note.

EldarKinSlayer there were multiple iterations of the Mk3. the last one was safe, but all the others were dangerous and the first was quite possibly the worst Ross rifle ever made. for more detail, you should watch C&Rsenals video on it

thanks rob, i'm really excited about this series. this is the one I've been hoping for and looks like it will be so much better than I could have imagined. I get the feeling that this series will become essential viewing for anyone interested in lee enfields or ww1. we all know the SMLE was the main battle rifle of the british empire in ww1. plus plenty of viewers know a bit about ww1 and also what a lee enfield feels like to hold, load, cycle and fire. knowing how the soldiers were trained to use it completes the picture and will help put it in the context of a living part of the soldiers everyday life. if it is not rude to ask, would it be possible to add a small section on how they were trained to clean and care for their SMLE's? also do you know if the soldiers were trained to pull the ammunition from their '08 webbing pockets in a specific order?thanks again.henry.
@britishmuzzleloaders
@britishmuzzleloaders 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Henry... Yes I can mention a bit on cleaning... the period techniques aren't as important anymore (re the flushing of the barrel with two pints of boiling water) as the primers used nowadays aren't corrosive... but yes, a bit on general field maintenance can be thrown in. As for the order of the pockets,... there is no mention... might some instructors or tommies have had their "ways",...? sure,.... but in general, when fighting out of a ditch or lying on the ground under fire, the really important aspect is not the fine tuned, range-centric tricks, but rather the ability to get on with it and adapt to wherever your ammo is at that time because when it hits the fan, things will never be where you want them to be... :-)
