I'm surprised there is no mention of deactivating shields, cargo scoop, power distributor, hangar, weapons, and any other modules that you are not currently using. This will make your ship much cooler during refuelling and allow you to jump out sooner. Just remember to reactivate your shields and etc before landing on a planet and when you are nearing the bubble if you are worried about pirates.
@theprogram8633 жыл бұрын
I agree but when it comes to shields, I feel like by the time you know you need them, it's too late to activate them. Arguably this applies to your power distributor too. A decently outfitted ship doesn't need heat management that's so aggressive, even without engineering. SG is talking to newbies who won't remember to turn their shields/distributor on in the flurry of all the other things they're doing. For stuff like limpet controllers and vehicle hangars, Im with you 100%.

Agreed, but in his defense it's a scooping guide not a "good exploration procedure" guide. I scoop very slowly, until my rate maxed, then I zero my throttle and sit on the star. While I'm waiting for the scoop rate to climb high enough, I watch my heat, maneuver to minimize the trip around to get LOS to the next jump point, and honk the system. If heat is stable and I have the time, then I use my FSS while scooping. If heat is a problem (rare) or scooping is too quick for me to have enough time (very common) then I accelerate and leave the star's scoop region, and then zero my throttle and FSS from there while cooling down. My experience with fast scooping is that it's too fiddly and dangerous for you to be able to take your eyes off the HUD to map the system. That's just how it's worked out for me. Slow scooping is more friendly to multitasking, which when exploring seems to save me much more time overall, because you take care of two time-consuming, repetitive tasks at the same time.
@lesath78833 жыл бұрын
From my experience, ships can get jumps started as long as they are getting away from the star and below 70° temp. Depending on the ship and how far you are, your ship can cool off a jump as high as 85°, but some times you are still too close to the star, and you'll jump to 130° and cook yourself. Also, very low heat ships, like 25° or lower resting heat can get sit by the star, fuelscoop at max speed, prepare the jump, and throttle up when the FSD is charged. These ships will spend the fuel as the jump is started, and fuelscoop during the animation, recovering a bit of what was spent. This can be done on unengineered ships, but getting them cool enough will mean most run shieldless.

If you do decide to use heat sinks during long-distance exploration it is important to visit a materials Trader and stock up completely on the components you need because they are not raw materials. They are manufactured materials. If you have a few good Engineers unlocked you can also design your ship with a low emissions power plant. The best way to do this is to uninstall the majority of the modules that you can fly around without using. Automatic field maintenance units planetary vehicle hangar. Limpets. Fighter Hangar Bays. Then look at the power requirement for your ship. Purchase a power plant that you can modify between G3 and G5 for low emissions. This will make your ship run very cold. At times your windows will ice up while you're in super cruise. This will allow you to scoop longer and mitigate Heath much easier. it is a little safer to run these builds without heat sinks but for long-distance exploration I would suggest running at least one lightweight heat sink. After you found the power plant that suits your needs reinstall your modules. If you need to use a field maintenance unit shut down your guardian frame shift Drive, frame shift Drive, power distributor excetera to allow for the amount of power you need to complete repairs. If you want higher speed repair run to field maintenance units. If you find that you are slightly under your power requirements monster your power plant. if you have more than enough power thermal spread or strip down your power plant. As an added bonus it's pretty cool to land on a planet surface and hear your windows icing up from how cold your ship runs. If you design your ship the right way you can also make it into a cold running build to help protect you when you're in populated systems. if your ship is decently fast and you have a cold running build it is very hard for someone to shoot what they cannot see. Unless of course they have emissive munitions. Experiment with low emission power plants for your build and you will find a lot of cool things you can do.

Researching 'proper' fuel scooping techniqus. Thanks for the info! I've been flying without orbit lines, having to eyeball where the exclusion zone is by monitoring the heat as I close orbit the star, 75% speed until full, watching the surface distance out of the lower outer corner of the cockpit glass of whatever I'm flying. Flyby has never net me a top off, and I had recently seen someone 'park' over a star to refuel, seemed easier than what I've been doing. I've also learned not to 'belly flop' into the exusion zone thanks to my Anaconda doing just that the 1st 2 or 3 times I tried scooping in it.

The Krait II has some neat little cutouts in the front panel, just near the top of the radar, that act as a pseudo boresight for tracking the exclusion zone for me. I play in VR, and fuel scooping has become so reflexive that I put a twitch stream in between the HUD primary/secondary brackets, completely filling my forward view for my trip last night. And if the exclusion zone is bugging out, you could also take a small haircut on your scoop time by pulling away until you drop just below full efficiency. Then try to keep the rate steady. If the rate falls, you're getting too far away. If it rises, you're getting too close.

I like to just bring fuel tanks, because then I can just fly around the star and jump right when the FSD is off cooldown. Then I'm out of fuel after an hour and a half ish, at which point I park my ship somewhat close but not entirely by the star and take a 10 minute break to get some water and stretch my legs. I come back, ship's fueled up and ready to go for another hour and a half. This also means that I'm always far enough away that the temperature equilibrates below 100% (usually 60-ish) and I'm never in danger of entering the EZ.

This thing had spend just about thirty minutes of passing an on-planet base for data interaction. I thought I was supposed to deploy my lander, only to find out through a video that all I need to do is get close and scan it. Well, one mission down (the other with the same objective wouldn't take) and I depart to head back in turn in. But alas, I now have less than 1/4 is my fuel left and no fuel scoop. I'm not going to give up, but it personally feels like a huge oversight from the devs to not include this information in some kind of training mission. Ugh.

I'm usinf fuel scoop when mining. Though I do not have the highest fuel scoop i can have. I need that for cargo. But i have the highest after other priorities is dealt with. So in my python i have a 4A scoop. And I fuel at every start i can. I'm not that worried about not being able to scoop at every star so once now and then i need to go one revolution around a star. But that ok for me. Often just scoop in the time FSD is on cooldown. Or when next star is on the other side from where i dropped in. Python is a really cool ship and i do not have any problem with heat. But i carry heatsink for when i need to not be scaned so i use it some sometimes when i need to scoop for longer time. God guide and i will follow it when buy myself a ship to explore with. Edit: forgot one thing. If i need to tab out to check something, like where to go when for the next trip or just find the next KZbin clip or anything else i might need to check i usually go in to fuel scooping but at a low rate and just sits there while doing other things at zero throttle. It takes time to scoop but the other thing in doing takes time to so at the end i will have saved time anyway

All that and it STILL runs cooler than my AspX which was built for cool running and exploration and isn't by any means a hot-running ship. I keep waiting for a nerf.

I put a 2E scoop on my Cobra to give me some extra insurance bopping around the bubble so I didn't have t9o worry about landing every third jump or whatever. But scooping doesn't seem to replenish the fuel for getting around systems, only the jump fuel. I have no problem scooping despite figuring it out myself. It takes a few seconds, but I can keep the heat below 70 easily. Although I did screw up once and spike it to 114. Oops.
@theprogram8633 жыл бұрын
Have the scooping mechanics changed since this video came out? I pop out of hyperspace at 0 throttle. I orient myself roughly the way SG does, then goose my throttle very slightly, until the scoop turns on. When the rate gets up to where I want it (which takes a while), I zero my throttle again and sit on the star. Yes, even a giant. Very little risk of hitting the exclusion zone (even if you can't see it) and minimized heat gain. High speed scooping like SG recommends get to max scoop rate faster, but also generate a lot of heat and require fiddly piloting and sometimes multiple passes, so your total scoop time is only lower if everything goes right. My experience is that if your tanks are nearly full anyway, you won't notice the slight difference. If your tanks are nearly empty, then either way you'll spend most of your time at full refuelling rate and the real time savings come from heat management and multitasking. Slow scooping also lets you honk the system (use the D-scanner) while orienting yourself. Then if it's a quick scoop, you can duck outside the scoop zone once you're full and run your FSS. If it's a long scoop, take a moment to make sure your heat is stable and then pop the FSS to map the system while you wait for scooping to complete. For long exploration voyages, any loss in speed is made up for via fewer crises and the ability to safely multitask. A cold ship helps a LOT. Dolphins are brilliant for this, as are DBX's. The trick to getting a low resting heat is to have minimum power consumption (total PP capacity doesn't matter) and a good thermal efficiency. That means an A-rated power plant and turning off modules you aren't using, like a cargo hatch or planetary vehicle hangar. A few patches ago, the devs gave heat sinks a slight protective power for modules vs heat damage. So even just having them and not using them is helpful, and they come in handy for weird environments and emergencies. I agree that you shouldn't be using them for scooping. And I totally agree about having a max size A-rated scoop. It's worth the investment. Many times I fill my tank almost instantly, which is great when it happens.
@davedahl44614 жыл бұрын
Can a heat sink save you from some of that damage if you use it quick enough?
@theprogram8633 жыл бұрын
Yeah but typically you'll be scooping so often that you'll run out of HS ammo if you rely on them. Better to develop habits that prevent you from needing to use a HS at all, even for emergency dropouts. Reloads via synthesis require a manufactured component, so in general it's better to eat the damage and then fix it via an AFMU, whose reloads CAN be synthesized from materials you can collect entirely in the field. That said, HAVING a HS is a very good idea. From what I understand, in addition to being useful for real emergencies, just having some equipped has a slight protective effect vs heat damage to modules. It's enough that I've noticed, but none of the heat mechanics reverse-engineering threads I've read have worked out what kind of protection or how much you get. In most cases, heat damage only turns into a crisis if you are inexperienced or panic. I used to be astonished at how much heat people would build up on youtube vids and wonder how they shrugged it off when my ships got hammered. Some of that is build and engineering, but most of it is experience and knowing how to mitigate the worst of it and cool down quickly and safely.

If you're constantly trying to scoop at maximum rate, the heat will become very bad. Also note that you do not have to move to fuel scoop, you only have to move to make the rate change. So even while going at very low speeds, you can find a good fuel scooping rate that also won't overheat your ship too fast and you can just sit there waiting for that sun to refuel your ship. Also try to not start charging your FSD for the next jump until the little icon for the star you are scooping from on your HUD turns from red to orange. If you start earlier the heat from the sun and the heat from your FSD will combine and go very high very fast. If you hit the FSD as soon as the star icon turned orange, you will most likely gain around 2-3 more ticks of heat increase and then it should fall off again. Hope this helps o7

one would think in the 3000's you would have the technology to have an automatic discovery scanner
@SPFLDAngler3 жыл бұрын
They do... the fully upgraded scanner scans the entire solar system.. goes from first - 500 light seconds to second - 1,500 and finally third -everything in the system...

Hm yes Let’s scoop a bit… whoops not scoopable star. Whoops - stuck in space. Whoops - dies of oxygen loss 🤞

scoop so important that it has to be the highest class ?
@greymanjones55594 жыл бұрын
Higher level scoops don't weigh more that lower level ones and if you're only out exploring, it's probably the best way to go while saving some time on your trips.

Probably the reason why people like "KGB FOAM" is because KGB was a Soviet Russia's intelligence agency. Most espionage movies feature KGB, and maybe that's why people like it. "Foam" is not a big deal, is it?

It's a little deceiving to name this video a "no BS" guide.. it's collectively 13 minutes of anecdotes and talking yourself up, and 45 seconds of useful information.

Oh Be a Fine Girl And Kiss Me is a more than a little questionable, isn’t it?
@theprogram8633 жыл бұрын
Yes, I guess it's questionable... in that it is a question. Would you rather that someone doesn't ask and lunges right in? Or that people don't kiss at all? I thought we want people asking for consent! (A gay friend uses "Oh Be A Fine Guy, Kiss Me." So switch genders as appropriate.)
