For years Time Team fan Frances Davies has been collecting finds from the field outside her back door in Skipsea in East Yorkshire. She has uncovered Neolithic, Roman and Saxon items, but her best finds are medieval pots dating from the Norman Conquest. It's clear that there was some habitation in the area 1,000 years ago, but a geophysics plot of the site reveals incredible results, far beyond the team's expectations. Could Frances have had a whole Norman village in her field, a village lost to the records? And could there be a clue in nearby Skipsea Castle, the seat of power of the Norman overlord of the whole area? The Team have three days to find out.

I love watching Tony learn more and more about everything, his knowledge of this field has grown SO much over time. I love how he can now really bring serious points to the team and have a back and forth about them. It makes things so entertaining because if you’ve been watching for a while you grow with him and he asks the questions you think of or asks things at the same level of education as you have about the finds or lack there of. I know it’s geared that way, but he does also seem to genuinely be learning and asking certain questions

I just love watching Phil talking, digging, and making philosophical comments. He's definitely from a blue collar background and acts and talks like a blue-collar person but has a tremendous intellect and knowledge. His overall hand eye coordination amazing. I have to laugh when he reminds me of somebody from the southeastern United States who knows a great deal and can do a great deal but makes you think he's as dumb as a rock. Then, he does a deal with you and you think you came out way ahead but later on you'll figure out he got the very best of the deal. I spent the majority of my adult life as a blue collar worker and then went back to college and got a PhD in vocational education. Then, I . people working in factory automation where I had to be able to act and function like a blue-collar person or they would not accept what I was teaching them. A big wink for Phil. 😉

As an archaeologist myself, we work on a lot of construction sites. Over educated ditch diggers, shovel bums are a few of the terms used. It kind of is a blue collar field. Field scientists are a special breed. Phil represents the us very well. I have a cowboy hat that looks about as beaten up as Phil's, with hawk and eagle feathers I've found in the field.

Clay is dug from fields in Zambia, pressed out to brick shapes and allowed to dry. Then a large block like a small house is made of them, leaving small spaces between and tunnels below. Firewood is put in the tunnels and left for a day. The grey clay is now red brick for building with.

Ruth Goodman lost all her credibility when she proposed, on national TV, that at the outbreak of WW2 all the farmers ran out and shot all their livestock for fear of sustaining them throughout the lean period to follow, and at Christmas 1939 turkey or chicken was replaced with some sort of mock up of baked veg with parsnips for legs and I forget what else, even I know that's a ludicrous idea, my neighbor at the time was of farming stock who had experienced 1939, I heard him laughing through the wall, the woman is an idiot!

I was born in Hull and lived in Withernsea just down the coast from Skipsea passed Hornsea i have passed this place loads of times very interesting place and over the other side of Withernsea just before Welwick near Patrington is were the gunpowder plot was planned out. Great quality. I’ve watched every episode I’ve found but some are difficult the see all of the detail. When Phil starts talking about color or consistency changes in a dig, details matter. i know any of the registered sites have entries on a website that details what work has been done on the site but I don't know what that site is or how to navigate it

They do a 3 day dig. There was one that went 4 days because of bones. If I'm correct, they spend a day recording everything and closing trenches and re-landscaping. They write detailed reports of where they dug; how deep , wide, and long; what they found and where in 3 dimensions. Basically, they're the same detail as full blown digs. The expectation is that someone will come behind and do a full detailed excavation, presumably for their Ph.D. or field training.

I really enjoyed watching them dig through the layers of built-up soil because it is obvious does it takes time to build up soil material like that. Once in awhile, they show where the landscape has been cut through by flowing water. I would like to see more of that from the landscape because if soil is being laid down somewhere, it's being removed from somewhere else. I was excited to hear about soil physically brought into this site and seeing where the ocean was taking land away. To me, it is as important to see where things have been taken away as it is to see where things have been built up. It's obvious you're not going to have archaeological finds where things have been taken away but they are all part of the process.

I am sure the pottery interpretation is wrong. It's a handle shape for sure but not one that was attached to any vessel (time 9.00). The reason being there's glaze on the handle's end that would have been firmly attached to a vessel. Glaze usually goes on after a first firing (bisc firing). Although you can glaze using a once firing process, here a bisc and glaze firing are combined. Usually "Once fired" glazes have a very high clay content and are opaque often refered to as a "stiff glaze". This glaze looks transparent, and has a green colour coming from copper being added which generally produces a "runny glaze". I think it's a glaze test piece. Haven't watch fully yet, so do they find a kiln in area??? Let's wait and see.
