The North Face Presents: Earthside​

In the spring of 2022, four athletes on The North Face team, Emily Harrington, Brette​ Harrington, Christina Lusti and Hilaree Nelson embarked on the trip of a lifetime. Their expedition to climb and ski epic first descents on Baffin Island, Canada became a celebration-of their​ accomplishments, of their friendship, and of their lives.​

I was climbing Manaslu alongside Hilaree when she had her accident above camp 3. Only spoke with her twice, but both times her ethusiasm made me smile. The conditions were brutal for weeks on end and I didn't see that smile leave her once.

What an amazing tribute to Hilaree! I had been waiting for something from The North Face honoring such an incredible athlete and person, and while it took almost a year, it didn't disappoint. Hilaree is such an inspiration to all women who push their limits and love the mountains!

When the Lhotse film was released on KZbin, I made my kids including my daughter watch it with me in the hope of inspiring them to be brave, was shellshocked some years later to hear about her tragic accident, RIP Hillaree, what a great tribute to her, may there be many more brave girls/women to inspire our children

What a beautiful and poignant film. I didn’t know Hilaree, but do share a small number of mutual friends. When Hilaree had her fall, I was in Kathmandu with my wife, and week or so later we were at Manaslu Base Camp and burned juniper. I also had a friend from Chamonix who we lost on Manaslu a few years ago, so it is a very special place. Kudos to all the team on the Baffin Island trip, it is so good to see ‘girl power’ kicking ass in the mountains ….. loved it.

No disrespect to Hilaree here, just admiration. As a counterpoint, however, I had a child later in life. When I did, I gave up my adventuring and climbing, having recognized that there was no reward worth the risk of depriving my child of a parent, or me the experience of raising him. Personal choice, but a valid one.

There's plenty and I mean a massive amount of parents that lead very sedentary lifestyles eating unhealthy food that will shorten their lives greatly, drinking alcohol, working in very high stress jobs, driving fast etc. Where do you draw the line? Seems women like these get judged much more harshly than a parent stuffing their face with junk food does.

I didn't understand the end of this when I started watching. I thought it was going to be just a great adventure among 4 amazing women athletes. I expected it to be over about 2/3 of the way through and then the real message started. I stopped the video and read the full video description. It was, in fact, a beautiful and moving tribute. I expected to watch just a couple minutes in total, and, well, it was a half hour extremely well spent.
