In this video Heimler walks you through the Northern Renaissance. Because of the printing press, the ideas of the Italian Renaissance spread to mainland Europe, but as it spread, it took on a new character. The Northern Renaissance, while it retained the character of humanism also held on to Christianity, and the result was Christian humanism.

Hello, Mr. Heimler. I love your videos. Quick question: If the Italian Renaissance was influenced more by secularism, humanism, and individualism, then why did the art in Italy focus more on Biblical figures? Thank you so much!
@bignerd9514

The renaissance happened despite secularist beliefs because not all renaissance artists believe in secularism and - even if they did - Christian artwork did not dispute or call for secularism in any way. Secularism was founded on the belief that ancient Christian beliefs were better in their simplicity. This means that renaissance thinkers preferred Christianity without the complex hierarchy of the corrupt Papacy which led to many focusing on early biblical figures in their artwork that differed from pre-renaissance artwork born from a non-secular era of Christianity. Essentially, renaissance depictions of biblical figures pointed to a different era of how they were perceived, that era being more secular. Humanism and the renaissance have a unique relationship because humanism was found through the renaissance and it continued to develop alongside it. Petrarch - the father of humanism - developed the ideas of humanism in his original studies that caused him to believe that the renaissance man is one of unlimited potential. An example of how humanism and the renaissance can be shown through biblical figures is Raphael's David because it presented this biblical figure as a renaissance man; a perfect man with the body of a Greek God (he was also notably circumcised which was accurate for when David was alive). This means that humanism supported the artform of redesigning Biblical figures because they became what humanists strove to be. Individualism supported the fostering of yourself to become an amazing renaissance man and the remaking of these Biblical figures were essentially examples of what you should seek to do under individualism and humanism. I hope this clears that up, sorry if it's a bit wordy.

There was a drift away during the High Renaissance towards pagan mythological subjects. Although Biblical subjects were still in demand

Just curious. Do you only go over things most likely to be on the test because I have my ap euro book for class in a few weeks, and there is a good amount of brain milk just floating there untouched by any of your vids...

Out of my history exams that I have taken and studied for, using his videos as part of my studying, Heimler covers the most important things that are most likely to be on the exam. In AP exams, it is impossible to really cover all the material since there is so much that "just might" be on the exams. Heimler covers the highlights and things that will 99% be on that AP exam in May. What I found works the best is if you pair textbook reading, your own class lectures, and heimler's video together. That way you cover a broader range of material so that you'll be more ready for the AP exam. Heimler's videos are definitely very helpful with understanding how things connect, being able to visualize the events, understanding the imp things you have read in the text, and hitting the highlights that you absolutely have to know.
