Great demonstration. A minor note of caution: as with most spices, you can use too much -- too many grace notes could become a distraction.

Been playing guitar for 50 years and it's something I became fairly advanced at doing, but it's a private kind of thing for me. Friends and family. But unfortunately, I get stuck in ruts. You give me the ability to be more diverse in my playing. Huge help. It opens up avenues I could really use as I play finger style. Different progressions and riffs. I just steal them, get them down and use them. The variety of what I can do now makes it a lot of fun. Thanks. Don't stop. I also use your videos to get to sleep. Strange world.

Nicely done. The subtleties are what separates the levels of players. Maybe a lesson on Desperado would be a good follow-up to aplpy it to a well-known song using these techniques ... from a familiar chord progression ... As a player trying to get to the next level, this is most helpful in answering the question, "How come it doesn't sound as good when I play it" .

Nice tips. It's easy to forget that scales are just a suggestion and that if it sounds good, it is good. You don't want to make a home on a non diatonic note, but they are powerful if used correctly.

I thought of a couple of songs off the top of my head that use grace notes. The intro to the Jimi Hendrix version of Hey Joe features a playing the third fret of the B string as a grace note slid up to the 5th fret. He plays both the B and high E strings simultaneously which creates a pretty cool effect. Another more recent song, Weezer's Say It Ain't So, starts with playing the 4th fret barred across the 6th, 5th, 4th, and 3rd strings, but then you hammer on 2 other notes, which escape me right now (I haven't played my guitar in some time), but it's another pretty cool effect that is a little tricky for beginners There's also another use of a grace note during the verse of Metallica's Fade to Black where they play the G and B as regular open strings, then play the first fret of the B string and the 2nd fret of the G string as grace notes to slide up 2 frets. I suppose I'm rambling a bit, but yeah, grace notes are used quite a bit and there are some neat tricks you can do to make them even cooler.

This technique can be a lifesaver if you accidentally hit a wrong note- if you slide quick enough it can go from a wrong note mistake to a grace note that sounds like you planned.
@Improbabilities
@Improbabilities 5 жыл бұрын
Patrick Foster if you play it cool, you can make a lot of mistakes sound great. One of my old class mates (music class) forgot to swap guitars between songs. He was supposed to switch tunings from drop D to standard. Luckily there was only guitar at the start of the next song. He played an open E major chord (with an unexpected D in the bass), let it ring for a moment, and then tuned the bottom string up to E with a short twist. Then he switched to the next chord as if nothing had happened. To anyone outside the band (including our teachers) it looked like rehearsed intro flare.
