Balzac didn't die in Berdichev. He married Countess Ewelina Hanska in Berdichev, and died in Paris.

Narrator is absurdly overbearing and self-grandizing. Could have summed up Grossman's career in two minutes, but sought to forge an equality with his guests.

I disagree. It helped set the background for those who may not have known him. n What I will say is that the whole thing suffers for not having Robert Chandler there. His insights are very interesting, and add to our understanding of Grossman.

I will never forget the woman walking to the gas chamber with the little boy , the beetle in the matchbox, the concept of becoming 'a doll ' .. Who could...it's 35 + years since I read it
