I was a victim of domestic violence 20 years ago. The police told me to go to the hospital for an evaluation. It may sound ridiculous but it was so important to me to shower, put on my best work outfit and put my makeup on before I went to the emergency room. All my dignity had been taken away by this man, I had to reclaim it. It was my small power move. I’m still proud of me for doing that.

Hi, Kay! That was a great video. I will be 80 in 2 weeks, and still have a busy life...partly because I have to work. Two of the jobs are in home and the third is to clean an Airbnb with my husband. I do have some physical problems, (one due to an abuse that occurred when I was in mid 50s) so I need to sit In my La-Z-Boy quite a few times during the day the day. But I always keep doing paperwork, even then. This is a good forced opportunity to meditate, as well, if I can quiet my brain!! Sometimes I feel like getting dressed for the day is too time consuming, but I do it anyway because I TOTALLY agree with everything you presented in this video!! I've practiced doing it fairly regularly. We DO need to feel good about ourselves at this age, and "getting dressed for our day" is a great start! God bless you.

Thank you, Kay, for this video. I have recently experienced the transformative benefits of getting dressed for my day. In June, I had all the old colored hair cut off and now I'm sporting a silver Pixie. Having my face framed in gray really makes me look washed out when I wake up in the morning so I decided to wear makeup every day, even if I'm staying at home. I've been getting dressed for my day for almost 3 months, and I can say that it makes me feel so much better! I no longer leave my house without full makeup, bright lipstick, earrings, and wearing colors that work well with my hair color. I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the end of June and I take great care with my grooming and clothing choices when visiting a doctor's office. I have received many compliments wherever I go. I used to say that I was invisible, but not now! PS. My lumpectomy shows clear margins and the sentinel node is clear, too!

After my husband of 22 years died, I discovered he had mismanaged our finances. Cancelled life insurance policies too. I was broke. I sold the home we shared and moved in with my daughter until I could get back on my feet. Once the dust had settled from all the drama I went into a deep depression. Didn’t sleep, eat, or get dressed. I spent my days crying or just laying in bed staring at the ceiling. This went on for many months. My daughter, who is a nurse, reached a point where she couldn’t stand seeing me like that any more. She suggested I set a small goal for myself, to get a shower and get dressed every day. It was the beginning of my healing. Being clean and dressed nicely, hair done, makeup on, jewelry on made me feel better and pushed me forward back into life. This story has a happy ending. In time I was able to buy a condo that was a fixer upper in a beautiful upscale area and rehabbed it. I built a new happy life for myself that led me to a wonderful man and at 67 I married again. We share a great life and are having so much fun together. Doesn’t sound like much but just taking care of yourself by getting dressed for your day is a positive, powerful thing. Thanks for the wonderful video!

You touched on another reason a little - getting dressed for others. I’m in my 70s, and my husband is not ready to retire. So regardless of what I’ve done during the day maybe I’ve gotten dressed to go to the grocery store or go to Bible study or whatever I will touch up my hair , add a fresh coat of lipstick and a squirt of perfume 10 minutes before I know my husband‘s coming home. He’s so appreciates that I make that effort he tells me all the time, how nice I look. I’ve been married to that guy for almost 54 years and I want him to still think I’m attractive.. it’s fun when he comes home and says “you’re looking cute or aren’t you looking sharp”.

Your comment was so precious to me. Yes, if we aren’t trying to look nice for our husbands who are we trying to look nice for? I’ve notice this too…when I dress for my day that my husband looks at me more and I get more sweet touches and comments. Wow! 54 years! Congratulations to you all. I’ve been married 25 years and it’s been the biggest blessing of my life. God bless you both & your marriage.💕~S.D.

I wish more women, especially young women with a lifetime ahead of them, understood this. I've seen young married women say that they wear ratty t-shirts and leggings every day and their husband doesn't mind, but I tell them that even though he doesn't say anything, even if it's on a subconscious level, he thinks less of her. She doesn't respect herself; he isn't going to respect her, either. After a few years of looking at a woman who doesn't care about herself (or, by extension, him), his attraction and affection for her is going to disappear. That marriage is going to break up. I've seen it happen in real time.

...I understand your Comment,.. I am retired as well, and I actually do little projects around my home ,so I wear clothing that I find is still presentable, but I can wear an Apron or Smock over it to keep my clothing clean. Somedays I am painting furniture...or walls . Or just regular deep cleaning of a Room .. . Or re- arrangening Furniture. I usually wear a skirt/ Knee length Golf skirt, a nice tank top or camisole, and a button down shirt ( or blouse ) that helps finish my outfit. I wear shoes that are just for around the house, but coukd easily change these to shoes that complement what I'm wearing if I am leaving the house . I do my hair everyday, and even if I'm not wearing makeup, I do wear a tinted sunscreen and lipstick and I do my eyebrows.

Perfect for this week. My husband passed away 4 months ago so I finally started my deep cleaning a couple of weeks ago. And, although I usually take time to get ready before going out, I didn’t few days ago when going to my dance class. I went with old jeans and a large camp shirt. Looking at myself in the mirror was so depressing. Won’t do that again. Everything you said is so true.

I recently had an appointment with a liver specialist and I was concerned about what was going on. When I go to the doctor, I like to be treated as an intelligent patient mostly because I want to know why things are happening and I want to know why they are making the decisions they are making. So I dressed up for that appointment. I do believe I get better answers when I look like someone who can have an intelligent discussion and ask smart questions. That's not a commentary on medical care, it's just interpersonal relationship stuff and I hope it works.

I am 71 years old. I get “dressed” even for yoga classes. I really think you have hit on the real reason why people don’t think they know how to pull together an outfit It’s takes a little energy and depression robs you of that energy. You also needs to feel you deserve to put the time and money on yourself. The connection between how you look and how you feel is well documented. This is my favorite video you have done.

Ah--such sage advice. One of the best things I like about your channel is the name of it--dressed for my day. I have been doing this very thing for many years now no matter what I do in my retirement. And so many compliments--starting from my husband. His compliments are very specific--on my hair or my outfit. A bonus--he dresses for his day--I make sure he has plenty of ironed shirts to choose from every day. At age 75 (very fit and trim) I lead a very active life with teaching Sunday school, serving on Church Council, weekly reading in French with one of my grandsons, daily Zoom classes to master French, as well as doing things with my husband and friends and seeing all my grandchildren. God is not finished with me yet and when I am dressed for my day I am fully cognizant of the good plans He has for me. You are a treasure Kay!

At 74 I have energy and don’t look my age… at the eye doctor today I looked at women who were probably my age and they didn’t have a spark… some were dressed like they didn’t have anything that matched …. I’m 68 retired 3 years. My work attire was lovely and stylish. But at first I was perplexed at how to find a “dress code “ for my new life. Slowly I acquired things that are stylist yet still tailored and relaxed. I find that when I’m well put together the people I see daily seem to treat me much better - perhaps even nicer. I think it is due to my being well “dressed for my day”. It also makes me feel better too! This was an excellent video, Kay!! One of the best. Thank you.

Kay, thank you so much for this one...most especially the last part on dealing with hard things...I have been a caregiver for a very ill husband (and might I add very brave husband) for the last ten years....yes, I do know that end of life is a part of life, but the greatest hardship isn't caregiving ( that is an honor) it's watching the person you love lose strength, vitality, and the ability to enjoy those things that brought joy and harmony to life. I have so fallen into your first 7 day experiment....soooo....spent the morning accessing the way I look in the mirror... doesn't make me feel better, couldn't make my hubby feel better.... probably makes him think he's running me into the ground...so I'm making a plan to pull myself out of this one and make the special effort to get dressed for my day ... My days may look a little different than they used to but I'm actually looking forward to running my own little experiment here, thanks for the lift.....❤

This video confirms that I am doing myself a disservice by doing that. I do need to make more effort and come up with some new wardrobe choices now that I'm semi-retired and working mostly from home. My work clothes are too dressy and I'd like to come up with some choices that are more put together but still comfortable and casual. That would be a great follow-up video to this one! Thank you for this thought-provoking video. BTW, I think you looked great when you weren't dressed for your day -- you still carried a great sense of style even when dressing down!

When health issues affect your wardrobe 😢 I’m 74, normal weight, short waisted with lovely long limbs. I’ve generally been stylish and always wear earrings. I’ve been concerned with my appearance. My legs, arms and neckline (clavicles) were always my assets. 5 years ago I had my varicose veins closed for pain relief. I never had the tortuous purple veins. Mine were deep and not noticeable except for the PAIN. So…2 months ago I had to return to wearing compression (not attractive light stylish but medical grade) hosiery. So my lovely ankles and calves are no longer a visible asset. 😢 I’m struggling with the realization I must ALWAYS wear compression or ACE bandages along with my heavy duty athletic shoes. As you can imagine I have been feeling low. My self image is definitely effected. Kay, I so appreciate your honesty, support and compassion you show towards your viewers. You’ve given me the impetus to shed the sadness and work with what I have now. Thank you.

Great video! I agree with all of it! This simple attitude and routine really determines how we structure our lives. And as we get older and lose some of the youthful energy and the need for taking care of children and employment it’s easy to slack off and not see the value of our lives to ourselves and others. I’ve often noticed women in middle age who do look invisible and have decided I don’t want that! I was introduced to terrible grief when my son committed suicide at 34 3 years ago. It has helped me to continue healthy routines to in many ways keep things together and feel like amid the unimaginable happening to me, I’m capable of going on.

Kay, this has been something so much on my heart this year… I am blessed with a closet full of gorgeous clothes because I really do love fashion and keeping up with all the runways and all of that, and I found that I was literally only getting dressed for church and the occasional times my husband and I would go out on a date. This is one of the things I asked the Lord to help me do this year… Do my hair a bit, my make up and wear something real every day… I, actually, at 60 look definitely better with some make up, especially mascara and eyebrows! But I’m still working on the discipline of it but by and large improved greatly by the grace of God! I just don’t want the things in my closet wasted! I love my clothes and I’m not sure why I was just being so lazy and not putting anything on. This has been a great boost and a great encouragement as I go along my journey!

This is a great video lesson! You address one of my BIG struggles, and I can definitely see how it makes a profound difference in my day when I do get up and get dressed. I also struggle with weight and my eating habits, and at 73 the health problems I have make it even more challenging! But I have resolved to be more intentional about dressing each day and am looking forward to reaping some benefits of doing so as I move forward! Thanks again for a wonderful video! Your messages to us on just living life are such a blessing! I thank God for you! ❤️🙏🏻

This is so true! I have worked from home most of my life (I'm a writer) so I learned 30 years ago that I need matching outfits, lipstick, a little eyebrow and liner makeup (not much) and earrings every single day. The outfits aren't fancy for home - nice jeans, a pressed modern top, but I have to be REALLY sick in bed not to do those things. And yes, always make the bed FIRST! Thank you for reminding me. As I get older, I have to remind myself that it is still important. And, yes, you are VERY creative. These are wonderful lessons that make us feel cheerful.

Such wisdom in this video, Kay! Getting dressed for the day makes such a difference in the way I feel about myself, and therefore how I interact with others. To me, it shows respect, both for myself and for others. Like I care enough about myself and them to put in the effort to be my best. Sure, we all have days when we "don't have it in us," like you said, for a variety of reasons. But generally speaking, investing in ourselves pays dividends many times over. I even think about it as taking care of what God has given us. If we are the temple of the Holy Spirit, and we are as the Bible says, then we need to care for that temple and show God that we value the gift He has given to us. ❤

At 76 I still make my bed when I get out of it and never leave the house without being made up and hair done. The nicest compliment my son gave me as a single parent was he could being anyone home and know I would be well dressed and looking good no matter the time of the day. I think it makes me happy to look good and makes me confident.

This was a timely video for me. My husband and I were literally having this conversation this morning about why I get dressed everyday. We recently retired two years ago. He did not understand why I get dressed everyday. I told him all the reasons you stated in this video. Although I did not know the cognitive reasons why (I do now🙂). This video segment confirmed for me that what I do is a good thing for me. Thank you for exploring the perspective of starting our day with purpose by getting dressed and putting your best forward in your blog. Excellent information!

Another great video, Kay, and SO true! I’ll share this: I am way over age 60, and I lost my mom when I was a teenager- - but there is one thing ( among many wise things) she taught me that has stayed with me my entire life. She told me to always “dress for my day and to keep myself up!” She added, “ You never know who you will run into when you go out, or if ‘Mr. Right’ is just waiting for you at the grocery store!” Ever since those early years, I have realized how helpful it is to know that and to practice it. I literally feel “naked” if I’m not dressed for my day!! Thank you, Kay!!

Excellent presentation! Since I have been following your program, I have made an effort every day to dress appropriately. Because I work in a farm community, I don't wear perfume, lots of jewelry or a full face make-up, but I will wear clean, no stained, well-tailored work clothes and just apply a little make-up (sunscreen and lip cream). While working outside, I find that sometimes I have to make a trip to town for items that we need. Since I made that effort to dress for the day, I don't feel embarrassed because of my appearance. In fact, while wearing my work outfit, people from time to time will give me compliments which surprises me. That's when I am happy I took the time to get dressed. Thanks again for adventuring out and testing your theory about the #1 mistakes. Keep up the good work.

Great advice, Kay. When I am "dressed for my day," I feel like I am ready for anything. But I do love to every once in a while not get dressed for my day when I know I won't be going anywhere, and then I call myself the "natural girl," ha. What I love the most is not having to take off my make-up in the evening. Such a chore!

Thanks, Kay! I love all of your videos, but this one is exceptionally good! I agree with everything you said. We do feel better about ourselves when we like what we see in the mirror! As we age, we want to continue to feel that "we have something to say" as you put it so well. It's not to draw attention to ourselves, but to feel more confident in reaching out to people who need a positive influence in their lives.

This was a great video. I've often said that on days when I'm not going anywhere, I still do at least some makeup and something to my hair because it makes me feel better about me. Now I know there's a reason behind this. I recently had severe burns on my feet and was not able to wear shoes for a couple weeks. At first I was excited when I'd recovered enough to wear slippers. However, once I returned to work and church, and the rest of my outfit was normal, I just felt so sloppy, less confident and a little down wearing slippers. It is just not "me." This week I've been able to get back into shoes and it's felt so uplifting and my confidence has returned.

One of the best things I did for myself when I was going through chemo, twice, was to shower, put on my makeup and jewelry, and pulling together a simple outfit before going to my infusions. Only one time did I not do that and I made sure I never skipped it again. It made a huge difference how I went about the rest of my day. Ironically, I was relieved after I lost my hair because it was one last step I had to do on any given day to get ready. I would joke how easy it was just to flip my wig……..on. God was good to sustain me. And praise God it’s now been 13 years since my last bout.

Kay, thank you so much for this video. I think this really hits home for many of us. Years ago, when I would go shopping, I would purposely not put on makeup just so the salesperson would leave me alone. If I had dressed nice and looked put together, I would be bothered constantly. So this really is a “thing”, and people perceive you by your outward appearance. I thought it was just me feeling not quite as smart, but people do look at you differently when you have “dressed for your day”! Since finding your channel a few years ago, you’ve taught me to put my best self out there. It really is a confidence booster! Thanks again for all you do with your channel!

Great video! I am at home full time but always shower, wash my hair, put on minimal makeup and get dressed daily. Often clothing is casual but clean and presentable. I have had a number of days when I received a call and have to run to help a family member with a medical emergency. Once dressed I know I am ready to go. I actually lay my clothes out from the day as I undress when I go to bed, so if there is a call in the night I know I can get dressed in a flash. My clothes are clean enough to pop ion in an emergency.

Really appreciated this, Kay; a very thoughtful video. I've never forgotten going from work, complete with reading glasses on a neck cord, to visit my terminally ill father and speak with his doctors. They all jumped to attention and took me seriously when I arrived, as apparently they thought I was a senior doctor (Consultant we say here in UK)! Today I am mostly in the same clothes as yesterday as bad sleep last night and two weeks of getting up early for builders (I'm a night owl) are taking their toll BUT I did choose a different belt and earrings ;) Hope you are being encouraged in Dallas.

Let me share one other big benefit to me of getting dressed for my day. I have nine (grown) kiddos and a whole heap o' grandkids, and many of them love to FaceTime me. I have found that if I've taken care of my appearance for the day, I am much more welcoming of those calls and not looking for a way to avoid them. Same with unexpected knocks on the door, or a call from someone who wants to drop by and pick up something they've left at my house -- all those little things that I might dread if I'm still looking like I just got out of the shower. It's a gift to my family and friends that I feel ready to welcome them, even for a few minutes.

I’m just now learning these things in my 60’s…better late than never! I’ve never really liked to spend a lot of time on getting “fixed up,” but maybe it was a self-esteem issue (like I wasn’t worth the time), but then I do tend to be a bit lazy! I think a few keys for me are: 1) de-cluttering the sloppy clothes; 2) having simple clothes that I love, and an easy makeup routine. I love the idea of taking pictures of outfit ideas! Great video, Kay!

Hi Kay. Just a quick thanks - your timing in my life is impeccable this time. I broke my back in June. And, while I have always tried to get up and get dressed in a put together way, for myself if nothing else, it became quite a challenge with a full torso brace and the inability to access my clothes and jewelry upstairs. I worked to remedy those things and whatever way I could. However, I find myself 12 weeks out, just released from full-time brace wearing, and I haven't been getting dressed / wearing my jewelry as much as I had in the past. I need to get back on the wagon as it were, and you have inspired me to do so. Thanks so much!

I enjoy putting outfits together, too, and working on my wardrobe, even ironing and cleaning or polishing shoes, now that I’m retired and have plenty of time and energy for it. I have a new wardrobe this year (necessary because of 50 lb. weight loss over the last 5-10 years), so I’m going to load it all up into my Stylebook App over the winter, and delete the old items that are gone now. (My non-air-conditioned house gets very hot even in October, so I do these projects when it cools down). Having everything in a wardrobe inventory app prevents me from buying duplicates or near-duplicates because I’m just not organized, which I did several times last year, as well as gives me outfit inspiration by seeing what I haven’t worn for a while, some even “create new outfits” for the user.

Hi Kay and great video! I worked remote from 2004 until I retired in 2022. I always tried to dress and look pulled together as I attended planned and unplanned video meetings. I also traveled about 6 times a year. No doubt it can be lonely but also has perks. A year into WFH, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent surgery and 6 weeks of radiation. I decided that I was going to look as good as I can when I went to radiation and doctor appointments. I purchased several "tr ack suits" and always got compliments which helped more than I thought possible. It's like I heard you before I followed you!!! In retirement, I working towards having pieces I enjoy wearing for whatever I am doing. Thank you for all you do Kay...much appreciated!

Thank you, Kay, for this very interesting video. I have had a few discussions with people about this very topic. I do it for me, not for how I think others think I should look. As you said, it helps me to feel good about myself, and that I can contribute to what is going on around me. Even though, I know that the people in my life really don't care if I wear makeup, or have a coordinating outfit. I have also found that even when I don't feel my best, if I am somewhat D.F.M.D., it helps me to feel better.
