Thanks for explaining. This makes so much sense! I've been confused because most of my life I was a straight-up hourglass based on measurements and I dressed accordingly. However perimenopause and ankle injury caused me to gain weight which threw off the proportions. I had been told I had become a rectangle as a result. But my shoulder and hip stay the same. The weight went on the front of me.

Thanks Kay for a different perspective on the Pear shape. I love the thought of being a triangle instead of a pear. Thanks to my grandfather, all the ladies in our household have hips! I can’t wait to get my yarn out and see if that still holds true for my post menopausal body shape at 63! I love the camel trousers you were wearing with the white button up shirt and black blazer. I did not see them in your shopping widget and I’m hoping you can tell me where they are from. They are so flattering. Enjoy your time off with your family! It’s so wonderful when the kids come around. We will look forward to seeing you when you get back to work, whenever that may be. Just enjoy yourself, work will still be there later.

Thank you for the information. I never thought that I was a triangle. I made marks on a mirror with a washable marker at my shoulder bones, waist and hips. I could really see the difference. I drew a straight line from my shoulder mark past my hip mark. My shoulders are 1 1/2 inch narrower than my hips on both sides. Now I know why I am very partial to puff sleeves.

This was a great video, Kay! I know a lot of people think an hourglass has to have a very tiny waist, and a much larger bust and hips. I'm a trim hourglass like you, with my shoulders and hips the same width. The Talbots size chart puts me at a size 10 for my bust and hips, and an 8 for my waist, though. Finding pants and skirts can be frustrating. I usually look for ones that are looser around the hips, and just buy the smaller size for my waist.

A few weeks ago a few people commented that I have an hourglass figure. I went away thinking, “WHAT”? I always assumed that I had a straight-ish figure. Well, I watched your video and did the string test, Kay. And guess what. I AM AN HOURGLASS! This has totally blown my mind. I can’t believe that I’m 68 and just now realizing this. I think there’s a few reasons why I never considered myself an hourglass. 1. As a teen and beyond the fashion industry/magazines have encountered all of us to do whatever it took to dress to “look” as long and lean as possible regardless of one’s actual figure. 2. Curves seemed “out”, matronly and maybe too sexy. 3. I tend to run a bit short waisted so that always threw me off some as to what my actual figure was. I’m going to sort through my clothes and get rid of the things that I’m not enjoying wearing. Now I know why! Thanks so much, Kay!! Have a wonderful NEW YEARS EVE AND DAY. Rest up and I’ll see you soon in 2023.

I’m a rectangle, so if I need a belt to give shape to a dress, for example, I often choose one that is the same color as the dress, to eliminate that high contrast and horizontal emphasis that a contrasting-color belt would give. I have all my neutral and basic color (navy, khaki green, burgundy, etc.) colors in quality belts acquired over the decades, they are very useful. I like belts, they are fun accessories, and sometimes do wear contrasting-color ones, too, depending on the effect I want. I try to plan outfits that don’t need belts if I’m going to be sitting all day, though, they can become uncomfortable after a while.

Using the bust measurement, instead of the shoulder measurement, is a very common mistake in determining body shape, which is based on the skeletal structure, not the overlying flesh. Of course, knowing one’s bust size is critical for choosing clothes and styling, but any body shape can have flat or very large busts, and any size in between, it’s not determinative of frame shape. Before and during menopause, I watched my former hourglass shape change into a rectangle as my waist thickened, but nothing else did. It makes it difficult to find clothes that fit well. I get nagged about my unhealthy waist:hip ratio, but even when I disastrously lost half my body weight because of serious illness, it didn’t change one bit, I still had the exact same ratio, but was just emaciated all over.

I used to be an hourglass before I started taking the medication I have to take. They make me eat more. I still have a waist. But I also have a lot of flab. Perhaps, I should exercise. Because steroids are not my friend. I will probably go off them again. And I will lose the weight. Then when I go back on I will gain weight again. It’s a vicious circle with me. And my body that isn’t working so good. I’m going to measure and see what I am. I’m guessing I’m an inverted triangle. But I could be an oval. I don’t really wear dresses. I do have some. I don’t wear them very often. My life is too casual. And I like it that way.

@DressedforMyDaywithKayHarms2 жыл бұрын
For the oval shaped woman the visual waistline - looking straight forward - will extend out past her hips and shoulders. For the rectangle, she doesn't have a defined waist, but it doesn't extend past her shoulders and hips. She's more even across the shoulders, waist and hips.

Hi Kay, I appreciate this info so much. So I don't have a defined waist. My test with the tape measure seemed to be exactly the same under the breasts and then moving down to my waist. But my hips are definitely much wider than my shoulder bones. I am very small-boned and slender. Would I still be a rectangle if my hips are wider than my shoulders?
@pajamamama59652 жыл бұрын
Hopefully Kay has a good answer. That sounds to me like you are a triangle/pear. The key is to balance the width of the shoulders with the width of the hips. So dark bottoms and light or bright colored tops or horizontal stripes on top, boat neck, puffed sleeves, ruffled neck etc. Those will help create a defined waste as well

I appreciate your advice and content. I disagree on these points. If you're overweight it can be harder to tell your shape. Classic hourglass has an ample bust and hips that are equal in measurement. Prior to having babies I was a size 12 ish and 34DD.... I'm 50 and though my waist is congested.... lol... I'm still an hourglass underneath. Only 8 to 10% of women are true HOURGLASS figures. You are trim and lovely... but your small bustline screams to me ... pear/ triangle shape. Just my opinion. Btw, most female clothes are suitable for your shape or apple.... If you're busty and have curvy thighs..... it's SURE HARD TO SHOP for clothes. I usually size up and alter them best I can. Thx4sharing xxooxxoo
