The NYC Convenience Store With A Secret Restaurant | Word of Mouth

Indo Java, an Indonesian market in the Elmhurst neighborhood of Queens, seems like an unassuming shop to passersby. But the smells coming from the tiny makeshift kitchen lure people inside to taste the flavors of Indonesian cuisine. Elvi and Viviane, both immigrants from Indonesia, run the convenience store-turned-restaurant. Elvi manages the market and Viviane does the cooking for Warung Kamis, a pop up at Indo Java that happens every Thursday. Their tiny storefront becomes a community hangout because of Viviane's cooking, like her beef curry, stir-fried squid, sauteed chayote, and fragrant anchovy rice. Viviane often uses imported Indonesian ingredients from the shop for her cooking. Indo Java has become a destination for other Indonesian immigrants and any food lover in NYC to gather, feast, and feel like home.

The "dirt" the west takes for granted like sweat and humidity for example, I think, seasons the food on a slowly-but-surely basis. Sometimes you can taste the environment of the food and that taste is usually very contrary to the sense of "hygiene"

I'm Filipino but I grew up in Malaysia. My mom had many Indonesian friends so we grew up feasting on delectable Indonesian cuisine. My mom treasures recipes given to her by her Indonesian friends. To this day, I crave these cuisines. Indonesian, Malaysian and Filipino food have similarities because we all come from one race, the Malayo-Polynesian. Can't wait to travel again and go back to Indonesia. Indonesians are so friendly. I go there, and they tell me, we Indonesians and Filipinos are brothers and sisters. I feel the genuine love.

My ex primary school classmate is Chinese-Spanish Filipina. I still contact her till now at 50yo even though she and family left Singapore in 1983. I think her family is the first Filipino family I ever saw in Singapore in 1977. She loves very spicy Singapore Malay, Indian and Chinese foods in Singapore. She will buy the very spicy curry flavoured Maggie instant noodles !!!🤣🤣🤣 She said Filipino dishes aren't spicy at all (I've only cooked chicken adabo once). I'm Javanese. Born in Singapore and live here. We are all Malays. The Philippines was conquered and colonized by the Spanish during the 16th century. Thus, the name The Philippines. Almost all the locals were converted to Roman Catholic religion by then. Some of our words are the same like kampung(house/village), minum (drink), beras(rice). I speak fluent English, Malay, bahasa Indonesia, Javanese, just a bit of Mandarin, Hokkien, French, Italian, German, Tagalog, Italian and Arabic.

Immigrants are truly the backbone of our country. It drives me nuts when people decide to shun, vilify and even altogether stop immigration to the states. As someone who started over in another country after leaving the states, most people don’t appreciate the hard work involved in picking up and starting completely over with very little and working hard just to survive. I am very happy to see them do so well and I hope someday they’ll be able to maybe expand a bit to have a little restaurant with maybe five tables and twice per week lol! Well done ladies 👍🏻

Bruh, here on the Big Island this Indo Lady just started selling bentos and plates...OMG! Beef rendang, jackfruit this, durian that, sambal this, etc etc. It’s freakin delicious!! And lucky here in Hawai’i our tropical weather allows for her to grow her herbs, exotic fruits just like in Indonesia. I’m hooked!

Fingering Things ✔️ I still remember more than 40 years ago, my family would go from across the Bay to a Chinese grocery in Chinatown San Francisco for its inexpensive Cantonese noodle soup, instead of “established” restaurants there. Today, the best Indian wrap sandwiches in LA are found at a gas station in WLA - however, they are not exactly cheap, but the fillings are so well-done that they rival fancy Indian restaurants in the U.S..

This is exactly what I think, when I was in US it was so easy to find thai food and I also like to eat at vietnam restaurants. At DC I tried find Indonesia restaurant but didn't find any so I ate at myanmar restaurant. So sad I think the reason why because the indonesian migrants in US and UK is considered "earn well" or rich they mostly are professional worker that's what make they don't feel the need to open for restaurant or anything because from my observation those Thai people who owned thai restaurant or vietnamenese overseas were really start they live there from the strached so to survive they opening family restaurant

Agree with you, it's so classic.. the taste from 1990s is still the same until now with only slight modification on chili sauce and fried onions.. but I was also advised not to eat too much of instant noodles to avoid diabetes..

Indonesia is a large and diverse country with different ethnicities and local languages. I assume these wonderful ladies are of chinese or minahasan descent. Minahasa is from north sulawesi close to the phillipines. Thats why their accent is quite similar to filipinos

I couldn’t agree more, I’ve been living in Australia for a while now. And there’s so many Indonesian restaurants here that could sell their food more expensive than these ladies, especially when they give up to four different dish. (Not all tho, but I compared it to a similar menu/dish) and please people, don’t compare the price here to the one in Indonesia, it’s not fair.

This is a typical "bodega." Most filipino bodegas in my area serve cooked food a la carte in the backend part of the groecry store, with stacks of cartons of instant noodles surrounding you as you eat. Good times with my mom.
