Went to architecture school and know someone who lives in NYC. This building is widely hated and most of the professors at my school didn't like it either (there are some cool interior shots but of course it's all insanely expensive). The building had massive problems and has never been close to being fully occupied. Someone people even left after issues started showing. If memory serves right, there is a lawsuit happening between two parties involved (I feel like one of them was the tenant/former tenants but not 100% sure and this was at least a year ago I heard about this).

@@jessierabbit from what I understand, there was an agreement that developers can build buildings around central as long as it doesn’t form a shadow on the park. This building does. Also, most of the condos are empty because they’re owned by wealthy foreign investors that have no plan to use it, rather just wait for the value to go up.

As a Structural Engineer, I was going to make the same comment! I love an architect that challenges me, and I don’t want to crush their dreams, but ultimately they draw the building, and we (along with other disciplines) make it work. A good/great Architect works with us and pre-empts our needs and makes allowances for them. This isn’t always the case, even with the big names, on the big projects!

Most people who buy units in this building and other buildings like it don't even live there. Many have never set foot inside the building nor do they intend to. These buildings are often constructed tax free because of "affordable" housing loopholes (look into the 421A exemption), some tax loopholes that treat these structures like smaller more affordable rental spaces and subsidies for public works/affordable housing done elsewhere by developers. In short, these condos are used as high liquidity, low maintenance, low taxed places to store wealth, otherwise known as "assets." No different than stock, rare art, automobiles, commodities, etc. The more you look into these structures, the more you'll realize they are bank accounts with high interest returns disguised as homes so who cares if they sway and make noise when they're 60% unoccupied? We need to stop looking at these places as though they follow poor and middle class logic. To a billionaire, this is a perfectly sensible way to keep their wealth stable and safe while they live much more discretely somewhere else.

If "we" are many and "they" are far fewer, if we outnumber them in every single way, why do we allow ourselves to be duped, to be put against one another over meaningless wedge issues? To accept mediocrity? It comes down to how you choose to define power and when you realize that your perception is power. This isn't a call for violence, this isn't a call for revolt or vengeance or even justice. It's a reminder that more changes happen when hundreds of millions of people make a clear decision but nothing gets done when they hold one another in contempt.

Vignoli has designed some other building with issues. Remember the London office tower that melted a car? That was due to the Sun reflection. He also designed a hotel in Las Vegas that reflected the Sun onto the pool area, making it uninhabitable. Same-same with a building in Brazil. And maybe the worst concert hall for any major orchestra in the world is the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia. Yes, Vignoli.

I used to work on the 38th floor of 388 Greenwich (the umbrella bldg/Travelers downtown). The creaking noises the building made from swaying during windy/stormy days was very disconcerting.
@michaeljarosz4062
@michaeljarosz4062 Жыл бұрын
The creaking in Manhattan office towers is not what most people think. As an architect who has 40+ years' tenant fit out experience in NYC, I have encountered and solved this problem. It is caused by the rigid sheets of gypsum drywall (GWB) used in most interior partitions. A GWB partition consists of two tracks, securely fastened to the floor slab and the underside of the overhead slab. Upright metal studs are inserted into the tracks but are only fastened to the floor track. When the building moves in the wind, the studs are free to slide in the upper track. Likewise, the GWB is fastened to the floor track and studs, but not the upper track. For additional flexibility, the top each stud can be wrapped in electrical tape to increase its ability to slide in the track by reducing friction. IF the partition was rigidly attached to the upper track, the rigid GWB would creak and moan due to its inability to move with the building structure. It's an expensive detail but it solves the problem. BTW: Most high-rise structures are engineered to move, just like the wings of an airplane flex. Perfect rigidity is difficult to achieve and would make the construction prohibitively expensive. And then there's movement caused by thermal expansion ................!

hi Ariel, Thanks for another interesting architectural short (video). The "windows" in between floors usually houses the building's mechanicals. They are exempted from the city's FAR (floor area ratio) constraints and hence allow the building to be constructed taller than if they weren't design with these "windows" (also known as mechanical floors).

I once met someone who worked in the Twin Towers. She said they swayed in the wind too.

Is this the building where the elevators would get stuck or stop working during storms and high wind? Imagine being stuck on the top floors in an elevator for several hours...😩😩😩😩

I wonder if there's some way to 'grease the squeaky wheel' as it were, at the sources of noise heard from the building swaying so much in the wind. 🌬

Live there? No! I’ve already served my time in the navy where on board one ship my compartment was in the forecastle, and and night in rough seas and rattling metal it was amazing to find out that I could eventually sleep through it. But why go through it now, if I don’t have to?

Yeah I would live there, but I wouldn't pay 25-100 million dollars for an apartment in a building that can't stay still.

If that building is swaying that badly in the wind then stress fractures will occur over time. If stress fractures happen and they are ignored(costs), well it would just snap.

@@ronnierodriguez7841 Not even close to true, Chicago is far far windier because of multiple reasons like the area it is located in the mid section of America, and they always get northern wind where its really frigid.

The company I worked for in 2014 supplied all the concrete. We pumped 14k(psi) . I know it hard to tell, but that’s white concrete. We had a special silo that had white cement that was added in place of traditional gray Portland cement.
