In this video we will explore members of The O'Jays who have sadly passed away and their contributions to the music industry. The O'Jays formed in Canton, Ohio, in the late 1950s, consisting of original members Eddie Levert, Walter Williams, William Powell, Bobby Massey, and Bill Isles. The group achieved mainstream success in the 1970s with hits like "Love Train," "Back Stabbers," and "For the Love of Money." The group was known for their smooth harmonies, socially conscious lyrics, and electrifying live performances.

William Powell didn't sing lead on those songs. It was Walter Williams. William Powell was STRICTLY a background singer in the O'Jays. Where did you obtain your facts? William Powell was integral in the harmonies and background sound, but a lead singer? No!

Can't pick just one...because they were a solid unit! Love them ALL! i I remember their first hit, 'Lonely Drifter,' when they were a 5 member group; and their performance back in the early 60's; at a high school, sock hop! LOVED THE O'Jays; named after famous D.J. Bobby O'Jay!

Sammy was originally a member of THE IMPERIALS…along with Little Anthony Gourdine, Ernest Wright, & Clarence Collins. The IMPERIALS went on hiatus for about 15 years, during with time Sammy was chosen as the replacement for William Powell in the O’Jays. He sang with the O’Jays for over 15 years. Then, he left The O’Jays, when he learned that The IMPERIALS were getting back together. He rejoined The IMPERIALS…and remained with them until he retired. SAMMY was INDUCTED into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with BOTH GROUPS: The OJays in 2005, and Little Anthony & THE IMPERIALS in 2009. SAMMY was inducted into the O’Jays IN PLACE OF Original O’Jays member BILL ISLES…a decision that Original O’Jays member BOBBY MASSEY disagreed with.

I can remember when there were actually five members. Their 1967 album release "Soul Sounds" is as good as anything put out on the Motown label, and their shows at Leo's Casino in Cleveland were electrifying. The album features Lonely Drifter, Lipstick Traces, No Time for You, I'm Working on Your Case, Oh, How You Hurt Me, A Blowing Wind and several others. A virtual greatest hits album of their work in the '60's. Check it out.

to my knowledge, arlester chistian was not a member of the ojays. i will have to double check but i think he was part of a band that backed up the ojays in the early 60s. he was a native of buffalo new york and created dyke and the blazers who had many hits including "funky broadway" which i believe was the first by any artist of the word "funk".

Bill Isles was NOT INDUCTED with the Other Original Members of the O’Jays into The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2005, for unknown reasons. Arlester “Dyke” Christian was NEVER a member of The O’Jays. He was leader of their old backup band…who later became known as Dyke & The Blazers. William Powell WAS a Lead Singer of The O’Jays during their early career, but NOT on ANY of the songs mentioned here. He sang lead on early hits like WORKING ON YOUR CASE, OH HOW YOU HURT ME, and LET IT ALL OUT. most later leads were only by Eddie LEVERT and Walter WILLIAMS. William POWELL lost his lead position when the group signed with Gamble & Huff in the early 70’s…but POWELL, LEVERT, and WILLIAMS were ALL LEAD SINGERS of The OJAYS in the early years.

Dyke he was not considered an O'Jay The O'Jays were the frontline singers Dyke was in the backing band. Just like bands that backed all those great groups were not considered a member of the group. For example... M.F.S.B backed and toured> with many of the Philly Sound groups. But officially were not considered members of those groups.
