The Object 248 Experience

The battlepass in War Thunder started pretty strong, but slowly became less rewarding and interesting over time. The new top reward premium tank, Object 248, brings some fun back into it. Object 248 is essentially an IS-2 with a 100mm cannon instead of the infamous 122mm, but it is much more fun to play. The 100mm has basically the same penetration but slightly less damage and a much faster reload rate. It's definitely worth getting the battlepass if you're a fan of Russian tanks or are just looking for an effective premium to grind with. I do wish Gaijin would bring back some of the more unique offerings, but Object 248 is welcome regardless.

To be fair the IS-2 has advantages the KT doesn't. Just to be fair. But I also think the Tiger II is overall a better tank especially, once again and as I always say, at range and in any realistic tank engagement. At least on paper it's better, I know in reality the Tiger II suffered from the quality issues of late war Germany. But at least the IS-2 has a much smaller profile, better speed, a far better reverse and while that gun is a long reload it's also devastating to anything it hit. I just watched Chieftan do a tour of a Finnish tank museum. They showed a KV that one of the Finnish KV models in Gates of Hell I believe is based on, and it had taken two non penetrating hits from a T-34/85 which is impressive. But in reality the hits absolutely ruined the driver, and allegedly perforated every crew member's ear drums. And those were 85mm guns, not 122mm guns. So in reality, a 122mm at the speeds it moved it, just like the SU 152 and ISU 152, were basically disabling shots even if they failed to penetrate on any vehicle. But again, that's reality and not WT.

Now you have me questioning that. I will go out on a limb though and say the IS-2 has got to still have a better reverse speed, anything using the IS platform has great reverse in the game.

They're not survivable, they have troll armour. If you know the game well enough they're really not an issue but even then on the odd occasion your shot might be off by a mm and thus ruin your whole day. Just keep that in mind when deciding how to approach one instead of taking risks that will get you killed in the inevitable occasion that volumetric says 'lol no.' Always lower glacis if that's available. Big, square and flat. As someone who does play the IS, attempting to RELY on it WILL get you killed but it does on occasions save my life.

actually i find regular IS-2 (5.7) to be a very satisfying tank to play. i mean yeah, reload is long, but it feels so great when you basically only need to hit anything out there and it blows up (exclude your usual bugThunder moments but it has little to do with the tank itself). in addition somewhat thin armor does deflect rounds (only if you dont expect it to), and reverse gear is surprisingly good for a russian tank

Some players, myself included like to use that very reactive reverse gear to drive backwards towards the enemy. People don't realize this, but the engine plate is 60mm thick and angled, so in once in a rare while you'll actually bounce a shot. And if you don't? Your engine gets damaged and your tank doesn't insta-explode because of the frontal fuel tanks not detonating. Is this risky? Yes. Is it better than being 1 shot from the front? Absolutely.

Object 248 gun is very good with excellent penetration of 230mm and an ok reload speed of 11s. but it doesn't have a cremation level of TNT in its shell and it has a worse Angle pen. I will give this gun 10/8.

I would say it fits fine at 6.3 due to the many issues the tank itself still has. 1. -3 gun elevation means the slightest incline can vastly affect your shot hitting or missing the target. You have to be on flat ground. (Affects trying to hull-down behind cover, more exposed.) 2. The "armor". This thing cannot be angled at all from the front, the areas to the left and right of the area underneath turret become huge "SHOOT ME HERE" spots because of how the hull is designed. Straight on is worse, the lower plate CANNOT take a single hit from any gun of its tier without detonating the fuel tanks and 1-shotting the tank instantly. Compare this to the Tiger 2's, there's a *SLIGHT* chance they can take a turret hit without the ammo behind the crew detonating. 3. Even with the reload, the IS2's gun could overmatch armor sometimes that the 100mm has no chance of penetrating. Very situational, very RNG dependent. So just because it has a few seconds shaved off doesn't mean it has the same ammo type ect. You have to factor that stuff in. Its like the 105 King Tiger, a side-grade with slightly better penetration performance at a cost of a higher reload. I think it'd struggle badly at 6.7, so where its at current is fine.

You do realise that this is the 5.7 IS-2 with a different gun, right? It's at 6.3, almost a full BR higher than the base version, which is more than fair given the faster reload. It's not like they just slapped a better gun in the IS-2 1944 and put it at the same BR; compared to the Mod. 1944, the Object 248 has a faster firing gun but much worse hull armour and no AA machine gun, which balances out. Object 248 being at 6.3 is like having a Tiger II(P) with a better gun at 7.0; if something like that existed, and the Germans got it, literally no one would care because it would be balanced.

@@jaxrammus9165 In my experience 6.7 is also very popular, with very strong and popular lineups for both the USA and Germany. The Tiger II(H) is one of the most common vehicles at 6.7, with the Tiger II(P), leKPz M41, JPz 4-5, Jagdpanther, Jagdtiger and Kugelblitz all available to back it up. The USA has the T34, T26E5, T26E1-1, M26, M50 Ontos, M56, T92 and M41A1 all as strong choices. BR 6.7 USA and Germany are some of the strongest lineups in the game, so when I play 6.3 USSR with the IS-2 1944, I find myself at 6.7 much more often than 5.7. Also, ever since T-44 got moved up to 6.7, the USSR no longer has a strong lineup at 6.3, so Object 248 is probably going to be used at 6.7 alongside T-44, SU-122-54 and Object 268, because at 6.3 it only has weak tank destroyers and the IS-2 1944 to back it up. In those lineups, it will only see 5.7 in a full downtier. Even if the Object 248 mostly gets downtiers to 5.7, though, it's still balanced by its BR. The standard IS-2 is 5.7, and can fight 4.7s in a full downtier, which means things like Sherman Firefly or Chi-To; the lowest Object 248 can go is 5.3, where it fights much stronger tanks like the Tiger H1 and Panther D, or stabilised tanks like the M4A3(76). The easiest match an Object 248 can have will contain a lot more tanks that can effectively fight it compared to the IS-2, so although its reload is faster, its armour is much less effective for the BR. In a full uptier, it can even fight the Leopard 1, which basically ignores its armour with APDS and HEAT, as well as M48s which are hard to penetrate with its gun and have HEAT that can OHK from the front. Having a +0.7 BR increase over the basic IS-2 is perfectly fair for only really having a better reload, especially when the new reload is still slower than a Tiger II's.

The IS-2 reminds me a bit of the tiger, it's got a powerful 1-shot gun but it can usually be 1-shot in return. A lot of the IS-2 I see die quite fast: IS-2 rushes in and gets shot in the fuel tank and instantly explodes, or they reverse into battle and a tank destroyer 1-shots them.

The is2 is very good especially the 1944 version. It’s much better as a mid to long range sniper than brawler because of the reload, but is armor is pretty effective and the gun is very good

Correcting you on the “straight up better version” comment at the beginning. The 248 is the early low BR hull armor layout for the IS-2 up at the same BR as the 1944 hull layout. That is a massive disadvantage
