When I was a little kid I remember seeing this at an arcade while in an after school program that took us to places like a movie theater and arcades. I always saw the older kids playing this no matter what and I never did get a chance to play it myself, but through watching them play it, I always remembered how the game looked, but I hadn't the slightest idea what the game was called since I really only paid attention to the gameplay, after a long search one day, it lead me to finding this video and lo and behold, this is the game I watched the older kids play and subsequently fail at the first stage before even getting to the Kraken. If it wasn't for me watching the older kids play this game, I don't think i would've ever found out about any of this

For those of you unfamiliar with mythology, let me break it down. Kraken: Norse monster; a giant octopus or squid said to drag ships underwater with its numerous tentacles Hydra: Greek monster; a creature with many heads on long necks, was killed by Heracles during his 12 labors Leviathan: Hebrew monster; a fish-like creature described in great detail in the Old Testament as nearly invincible Naga: Hindu monster; a specific class of divine being that took the form of a great snake Scylla and Charybdis: Greek monsters; occupied either side of the Strait of Messina; Scylla would always eat six crew members of each ship that passed by her side; Charybdis would create whirlpools strong enough to drag ships underwater if they veered too close Ahuizotl: Aztec monster; a dog-like hunter that would drag its prey underwater with its hand-tipped tail Medusa: Greek monster; a gorgon who could turn people who looked at her to stone Karkinos: Greek monster; a crab that was sent by Hera to distract Heracles while he was fighting the hydra Midgardsorm: Norse monster; a giant serpent that encircled the Earth with its body and gripped its own tail Cerberus: Greek monster; a three-headed dog charged with guarding the entrance to the Underworld Umi-Bozu: Japanese monster; a vaguely humanoid creature that would capsize the ships of any who tried to speak to it Vritra: Hindu monster; the personification of drought and a major adversary of Indra Kaliya: Hindu monster; a poisonous naga who lived in the Yamuna River and faced Krishna Dagon: Mesopotamian god of fertility, and then grain and fish and/or fishing Poseidon: Greek god of the sea and earthquakes Rahab: major sea demon in Medieval Jewish folklore

I remember spending SO many dollars for tokens on this at the bowling alley as a kid. The bosses were epic, scary, and really made me feel like an oceanic explorer as well as "a little fish in a VERY big pond", so to speak, compared to them. Even though it's the 1st & easiest boss, the Kraken is still my favorite of the creatures. When I first beat the game as a teen, I was initially in disbelief like, *"Wait, what just happened? Is that it? Did I seriously win?"* That feeling like I had conquered the world was great and reminds me to appreciate the older days of gaming. 😱 *#UnderTheSea* 🦈

Unlike common, ubiquitous arcade shooters like Jurassic Park and Terminator, this game has excellent lore, fun bosses, and beautiful aesthetics. It felt more like an experience, rather than just a regular shooting game. Growing up, I used to play this game with my grandfather at the boardwalk every summer. He was like a dad to me and we were both huge beach fans, so this was the perfect game. I remember spending hours and using so many tokens as a kid trying to beat it. Well, about 7 years ago, the arcade was bought out by new management and they got rid of the game, which was the most popular one. I haven't been able to find it anywhere else. This video brings back so many memories and lots of nostalgia. From the music, to the clip at the end, and even that iconic sound when you insert the coins, I feel like I'm reliving those moments playing it by the beach. This might sound cheesy to some, but this game has a special place in my heart. Thank you so much for the upload, I'll see again one day Pop

Played this game couple of years ago in Tenerife and completed it. Used to love playing this game years ago and it’s so hard to find now, sega should remake this game for arcades again with better graphics and motion and wind effects or a follow up to the original game at least. This game was so ahead of its time along with scud race which also used to same arcade board sega model 3.

@@JV-km9xk Yeah, I suppose the monsters were just acting on their instincts. But still, the monsters were doing more than just defending the seas from humans; they were killing innocent sea creatures too. Plus, there would’ve been a better way to protect the oceans than to start with violence.
