The first time I read it I didn’t quite get what was happening at the end but the way you read it showed the horror, sitting in that basement, the smell of pumpkin and toffee disguising the smell of meat and how bloody they would all be when that light went on…. ‘Don’t turn on the light!’ Also his intent of using Marion to get back at his wife… incredibly dark and suspenseful
