I am currently working on a project that involves drag and drop, socket and other stuff not covered in odin. This will be my final project. It means that I will be skipping photo tagging and chat app because imo these projects are too common and photo tagging is pretty simplistic.

Sounds like a good project to show some more technical competence. Happy coding!

@@self_taught_dev yeah true. I feel like the last 3 projects in node path are really common and everyone is building it.

Hey, thank you man that was a really inspiring story. I'm currently going through TOP Javascript section and then I want to do the React section, however and this is obviously a personal matter but I'm also working full time so it's tough. I have one leg out of my current job and one leg still in the office. I'm not sure what to do. Congrats on your success!

It's ideal that you keep your current job until you land another so that you have income! Keep grinding, it's a marathon not a sprint at TOP.

Hi Ben, I watched some of videos and found your views very honest and impressive. I am switching from Server technologies to Web development. I am learning from Odin Project right now. I know its different from real world experience, but from my experience three things are important: 1. One should simulate real world experience by creating own projects. This way, you will get all the challenges and problems of developers working in companies. Tutorials have ideal setup and limited problems or give limited experiences. 2. One should learn the SOP of software development ( tools, process, techniques and business process or constraint). 3. Mentors with real world experience are most important to help you discard learning unnecessary things. What's your view on this ?
@self_taught_devАй бұрын
@@dharmavarta thank you! Yes I agree with you. Fundamentals will help you solve problems efficiently. Real world experience from building your own apps that actually have end users is absolutely the best way to gain relevant experience. Mentors are great at helping you stay focused. I attribute most of my success to my pet rescue project that I built because it had real users and I couldn’t skip anything if I wanted to create a valuable product. That project got me my internship and the rest is history.

@self_taught_dev Thank you for your valuable insights. I am also thinking about doing some real projects after finishing ODIN projects. I have subscribed to your channel.

alright mate thanks for the content its really giving me inspiration and motivation my question is if im using chat gtp to look up the functions and bits of code i need and following KZbin tutorials but changing the function names ect.. but am i still learning? or am i cheating im working on pseudo code if that helps.
@self_taught_dev4 ай бұрын
@@AshRodders-vg6xw I think when you start out you should never take code from ChatGPT. You should write the code purely by yourself. You can use gpt to help you understand concepts but never to give you code.

@@self_taught_dev i think this is where ive gone wrong i thought i understood the concepts but as soon as im in the code editor i have to look up what im trying to do, i know this sounds stupid but are ou meant to know what to code by reading or can i use google and w3 schools ect? thanks for your time aswel if i could get half as good as you id be chuffed!

@@AshRodders-vg6xw you just have to start small and do lots of reps on projects that get bigger and bigger. I recommend the Odin project.

What would you recommend for a beginner starting with Ruby on Rails? Based on your experience, is The Odin Project one of the top tutorials you've encountered?
@self_taught_dev9 ай бұрын
Yes I would do the Odin project Ruby module (I skipped the last 3 projects of Ruby) then do their Rails module thoroughly.
@MitukaBwanausi9 ай бұрын
@@self_taught_dev Thanks. I'll certainly explore that soon. Right now, I'm completely absorbed in "Learn Ruby the Hard Way" by Zed Shaw. Its interactive and repetitive approach really helps in familiarizing oneself with the programming concepts.

Hey Ben. You said that you skiped some of the ruby projects and went strait to ruby on rails. I gues you did the Intermediate HTML and CSS and the databases? Where you all alone in this or did you had someone to talk/help/explaine. Did you used the TOP discord?. Some times i get stuck on the most easy things for hours and it pisses me off :D ( Thats why i saw your video with the caesar_cipher so i can get ideas how can be done) Also do you get the imposter syndrome at work? I feel like i will have it. No mater how good i will be.
@self_taught_dev2 ай бұрын
@@vagabondlife9718 I did do the intermediate HTML and CSS. I would not advise skipping much, I just made the decision due to time constraints. Doing all, or most, of the projects is important for developing you competence. I made these decisions to skip things by myself and took a gamble. Though, to be clear I completed the vast majority of content and only skipped one or two things here and there. I always made sure if I skipped a project that I read and understood the project and pseudocoded it and looked at others solutions so I had an idea of what and how to achieve the end result. I think imposter syndrome and struggling is normal. You cannot do it all by yourself, especially in the beginning, so lean on the Discord channel for help! Good luck!

when you quit job to fully focus on the odin project, how much time or hours you give per day consistantly so that you could complete in 8 months.
