Mike Grier as GM absolutely cooked during this off-season and in the draft. It’d still be a miracle if the sharks somehow sneak into a spot for the playoffs , but with the way the team is assembled now it wouldn’t surprise me as a fan if they finish with at least 30 wins next year.

25-30 is my guess. Definitely a much better record, and likely more close losses (only allowing eight goals and not ten in back to back games would be a nice improvement)

Wasting cap on Toffoli and Wennberg is what a bad GM would do. The same as not forcing Smith and Macklin to play in the the AHL for 2 years on the slide. The only reason I can be wrong is if the Sharks are a legit cup contender very soon. It is not realistic that will happen but I would be happy to be wrong. The sharks are trying to copy the hawks and it just is not realistic but it will give the fans a more watchable product. I would rather the sharks lose if leads to a cup win later on.

The quality of each teams roster is absolutely a factor, but these lines are also largely influenced by data meaning how the public bets, and how big time sharp gamblers bet. They anticipate risk they will take on and limit their losses based on the price offered. Source: I work in sports gambling

Missed a golden chance to joke about Desharnais being the biggest loss on the Oilers lol. I feel bad for Foegele, it sounded like he really wanted to stay but the Oilers weren't interested (for cap reasons, I mean, under different circumstances I do think they would have been). Wishing him all the best. Hopefully the Kings get a different matchup next postseason and we get to see what they can do.

For the 1st time since maybe the expansion season, I feel like expectations on Vegas are tempered, and they’re not the team expected to win the Pacific anymore… this could be a great thing for this team, as despite all the players that left (except for Marchessault, depth guys that got PAID), this VGK team is still LOADED at center, still possesses what’s likely the most loaded defensive core in hockey, and IMO, they actually got better between the pipes with the Samsonov signing to replace Thompson, who despite being an all-star, I don’t think has as high of a ceiling as Samsonov has, especially with Sean Burke coaching the goaltenders. The trade for Alexander Holtz was a low-key fleecing of New Jersey, as Holtz has the potential to become a star in the NHL, and the Olofsson signing was also a low-key excellent move to add a potential 20+ goal scorer to the lineup, and the VGK are also making Pavel Dorofeyev a mainstay in the top-6, and he’s a guy that has a chance to really break out this season and become a helluva scoring winger! To sum things up, they lost a lot of depth, but have gotten younger, and their ceiling is still high, and are thus still a very dangerous hockey team! I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if they actually are better than a lot of people are thinking they’ll be in 2024-25

@@wojowestcoast Uh what? He is a fast skater with no hands, he can forecheck but no finish, he shoots wide if he wasn't shooting in front of goalie. He is 28 years old so he is at his ceiling, he is not going to be better especially he shoots left anyway. He is not 3.5 mil worth of wing. Holloway shoots left, about the same size, much younger with higher ceiling, so not really a big loss at all.

Because of the turnover in Vancouver, I'm approaching this coming season like last season. Wait and see. If the Canucks come off to a good start and Demko is ready to go, things should be fine. I'm not expecting contender status given they're missing a top 4 defensive defenseman, but you never know. Having cap flexibility helps.

As an Oilers fan I don't like that we have the best odds. I think all of the confidence the media and us fans had in them at the beginning of this last years was a contributing factor to their failures, they seemed to be playing on fan's confidence rather ten their own. Hopefully the media picks teams other than the Oilers and the Oilers continue to play on their own confidence. I would feel a lot better picking my own Oilers to win if the media didn't follow suit again.

@isaacwest276 it was more likely the fact they were playing completely new dzone coverage by a coach who had not coached it before. Compared to Knob who has been a defensive sided coach for a while. Pair that with unsustainable poor finishing and bottom of the league goaltending, and you get 2-9-1.

I have always liked Colin Delia. I saw him play a few times for the Moose last year. He was the same goalie when he payed in the Canucks organizations. I thought maybe the Canucks, like the Jets with Comrie, would bring him back, but the Oilers got him. He is a good depth, or 3rd goalie and will get a few wins in the AHL. I'm hopeful he can take that backup to Skinner spot.

Just to add on even though now it feels like whining We didn’t address losing the only guy making our pp bearable with RV Our address to losing one of the statistically best d man in Roy was to sign a guy who is injury prone and a bottom d for 3.8 mil for like 4 years Our address to depth scoring was Foegele who is decent but I expect a at least small drop off from points not playing with dri and Jeannot (who I thought was an ok trade) We still don’t have an answer for net We now made it so much harder to get our young guys ice time Oh and we only have like one RHS for our forwards.

Losing two top six guys and not replacing them with anything equal on a team that was a WC2 doesn’t seem like a winning formula(and don’t say “injuries” we’ve been using that excuse for 4 years). Terry, McTavish, Zegras, Zelwegger, Mintyukov, Carlsson, Gaucher, Luneau, Warren, and Dostal make for an excellent young core group. Sennecke and Solberg are a just couple years away. DeBrusk was expected to get $5.8 million for 5 years. Getting the cap down by $300,000 and adding two years is a good deal. He'll only be 34 when it's done, so I don't have an issue with the term. There were nine players last year who were 35 years or older who have 50 or more points and 12 that had 40 or more points. The cap will be high enough that he should still be earning his paycheck, or close enough, right up till the end. Worst case scenario is always an injury that impedes his play without putting him on LTIR. However, aside from that, he should still be an asset right up till the end.

Losing Foegele does hurt, but 3,5 million cap hit for him is WAY too much. Oilers got Jeff Skinner for a 3 million cap hit. Granted, that's a special case and two completely different types of players, but still it's a guy who has scored 30+ goals twice in the last three seasons versus Warren Foegele. And if Skinner and Arvidsson both play 70+ games, I'd be very surprised if they don't score 30+ each. Full season and everything going as planned, wouldn't be shocked to see career highs for them. Might have my expectations set a bit too high, but the Oilers offence should be cooking next year.

I’ll break it down for you: Vegas’s offseason was at the trade deadline when they acquired Hanifin & Hertl. Those 2 guys alone were the replacements for Stephenson & Martinez, but also in their own ways new core pieces being integrated this off-season. Marchessault will be the big loss from the lineup, but at age 33, he wasn’t going to have much runway left, and there’s a young forward named Pavel Dorofeyev that’s been in and out of the lineup the past 2 seasons that I’m predicting takes Marchessault’s place. He’s a kid that when he’s played, has looked fantastic, so I’m thinking he’ll have a breakout season this year, barring any health concerns. Beyond that, Michael Amadio has been replaced by Alexander Holtz, and William Carrier has been replaced by Victor Olofsson. I also believe Vegas’ 1st round pick from a few years back in Brendan Brisson is making the team this year, and so at the moment, I have Vegas’ lineup looking like this: Barbashev - Eichel - Dorofeyev Holtz - Hertl - Stone Brisson - Karlsson - Olofsson Howden - Roy - Kolesar Hanifin - Pietrangelo Theodore - McNabb Hague - Whitecloud Hill/Samsonov Is it a loaded lineup? No, but is it still a very talented lineup? Absolutely. If this VGK team can stay away from the injury bug that’s plagued them for 3 straight regular seasons (I still don’t know how the 2023 Stanley Cup Championship team went 51-22-9 with the injuries it had throughout that regular season), this team will be a good team, but if they do have injuries again, I don’t think they’ll have the depth this time around to sustain it.
@Steve_Hunts96
@Steve_Hunts96 15 күн бұрын
I’ll also say that I don’t think Vegas is done making moves yet despite the lack of salary cap space. I’ve been sensing a trade to upgrade the forwards via using a defenseman, because Kaeden Korczak is being touted as an NHL ready player for the blue line, but Vegas is completely loaded on all 3 defensive pairings. It would make sense to ship out one of the defensemen to make room for Korczak if they got a forward upgrade in return.

5:17 "The biggest loss is Kevin Labanc" uhhh....the only person who is lazier than Labanc in the NHL is Mike Hoffman. Admittedly not much was lost from their final roster (if you go back to the TDL Hertl's the biggest loss), but a guy who wore out his welcome with three different coaches and couldn't earn a regular role on the worst team in the league isn't really a loss. Looking at the end of the season roster I'd say Carpenter's probably the biggest loss.

Labanc at one point in 2019 or something got to play with the top sharks players in the PP and last season he had to play with Nico Sturm. That is quite a decline in teammate help. I am not implying Lebanc belonged on the sharks #1 line because he did not earn that. Doug Wilson still overpaid him and that contract hurt the team. Will be interesting how much Labanc and Hoffman get in free agency.

@@DanRaidersWarriorsSharksGiants My prediction is they get PTOs and maybe get the league minimum, or within about 100k of that. For Hoffman I'm pretty confident he ends up either completely retiring or going to Europe. Labanc earned his contract the way so many other players have...Jumbo Joe's feeds. He was a one dimensional player, terrible defensively, who could only succeed with an elite playmaker at center. Even when he was succeeding, he had so many turnovers where he'd drop the puck back just after entering the zone leading to great chances going back the other way. Yes, going from playing with Jumbo to playing with Sturm is a drop off, but he didn't put the effort in to earn any sort of promotion. If it were just Quinn that demoted him that'd be one thing, but he went through three separate coaches all of whom he fell out of favor with and ended up either demoted to the fourth line or healthy scratched. As Sheng's said a few times on the SJHN podcast, he might find success in a sheltered power play specialist role on a team similar to what Noesen has had recently, but he's going to be lucky to get any more than a league minimum offer.
