The initial turtle joke laugh is very telling- there’s an opinion on this series- put forth by producers themselves- the Brent is deliiberately portrayed as the terrible boss by the “documentaries” producers. We all know how reality tv is edited by producers for enetertainment.. The idea here is that Brent is actually a reasonably capable boss and is somewhat popular with the staff (He has worked up to a higher position and he was chosen to be a motivational speaker because of his reputation- Slough is also the most efficient branch and incorporates Swindon) However, good parts, such as the group genuinely laughing at his turtle joke are cut out and he is made to be a laughing stock.
@greva29043 жыл бұрын
Ricky Gervais has said that Brent's downfall is that he's forever mugging and showing off for the cameras, as he deludedly thinks that this fly on the wall documentary is his big chance to become a famous entertainer. If the cameras weren't there he'd just be a fairly normal boss. Brent is always aware of when the cameras are on him, and he's forever looking to make sure the cameras are on him, and when they are he immediately starts trying to become the centre of attention. Which is how he keeps landing himself in one awkward situation after another with no idea how to get out of it.

It's a different kind of humor and you have to approach it with different expectations. I enjoyed the Office US with Steve Carell until his departure when the show turned into a disaster. The concept behind Brent’s character was that he was supposed to have been a reasonably competent manager, right up until the moment the documentary crew first walked through the door. Coming from an American, the original Office was simply one of the best shows ever. hands down. you can see many American shows these days "stealing" some of David Brent's mannerisms and facial expressions. Like "Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia," even though its one of my favorites, some of the early seasons show this clearly.
@PrimetimeX4 жыл бұрын
Its nothing like Always Sunny. The UK Office characters are only mildly exaggerated. Always Sunny characters are absurd to the absolute extreme. The humor in always sunny is the opposite of dry, its very dark and in-your-face. Most of the comedy is from dialogue and plot absurdity, not the subtle mannerisms or facial expressions. The UK Office was actually a parody of a real british office workplace. There are real David Brents out there. I worked in a law firm and my boss (one of the head attorneys) was just as cringeworthy as David Brent. As to your comment about American shows "stealing" from Brent, that is completely not true. I personally prefer the American version because the writing is better and the characters are more fleshed out. The characters in the British Office really only exist as toys for Brent to play around with. Only Tim, Dawn, and Gareth actually get any character development at all. Everyone else is pretty much just fodder. In the American version, the most obscure characters like Creed Bratton are really well-written and hilarious. I never fail to laugh at a Creed moment.
@jorelemes4 жыл бұрын
@@PrimetimeX You are comparing a show with 9 seasons with one with 2. Watch just the first two seasons from the office US, you think any of the characters outside Pam, Jim and Michael got any real development, eh? Creed is a perfect example of that.
@Harveygregorxotwod3 жыл бұрын
@@jorelemes couldn’t agree more. Don’t think it’s a fair case study at all. In the us office the only characters who are developed up until the 3rd season are Michael, Jim, Pam, Dwight and excluding a slight bit of screen time for characters like Kevin or Roy that’s really it. It’s only then when characters like Angela, Jan, Creed, Toby, Kelly, Andy, Karen etc. get fleshed out as up until that point they really have no development or screen time at all. The UK office only had two seasons which was the initial plan by Ricky Gervais from the beginning as by the final episode (spoiler elert) David is fired before having his spinoff movies. Ultimately due to the show being so short it meant that only the “primary” characters could be developed whereas in the American Adaptation minor characters like Lesley, Ryan, Phyllis and so many more straight up have episodes dedicated to them. Honestly prefer the American one abit more as honestly the slapstick and almost eccentric setting I find more entertaining. I feel the UK one is much more similar to working in a UK workplace , it is just much more realistic and the cringe moments really just sit with you whereas I feel the American moments often depart quickly from those moments. The scene with Brent dancing whilst everyone looks at him awkwardly would have never aired in the US one (at least in the same way)

That's where the two differ. You don't need that extra sentence: it just kills the vibe. A simple "Get out" followed by a good 10-15 of silence while the man awkwardly exits the room gives it a real sense of 'reprimand and repercussion' which a lot of American shows don't seem to get. Less is more.
