I hope you talk more about Peggy, the lone non-white character in the series, and her world. I love the scene of the blacks-only rail car and Peggy and her mother in the blacks-only café. Where were those types of establishments located in the city? What was black life like during that period? What kind of jobs were they allowed to have?

How did they disrespect his wife? No one was obligated to have a function at their house. I’d I offer to have a party at my house and the people who are throwing it decide to do something else, I promise you I won’t feel the least bit slighted. That is what I don’t like about the Russells. They are trying to force people to accept them. Why? Because they have a lot of money. They are not even attempted to let relationship happen organically with people who don’t even know them.

@@tammybenaytv4631 UM....how would you feel if someone thought they were better than you just because they had acquired wealth (old money) and you just made it on your own or even if you were poor imagine how that would feel just because you are not as financially well off people get to treat you like you are less than them. I treat people according to their values and associate myself with people based on character. Also the fact they cared more about not being with the mrs russel or having her associated with her rather then doing the right thing which is come together for the needy. You don't think it's disrespectful?

Agreed, many do not know that there was a Black community in NYC from the time of the American revolution.

And at least touch on the removal of the land-owning black community in Seneca Village, Manhattan to make way for Central Park - just one of the early egregious examples of gentrification from that era! Could be a bit of a history lesson for a lot of the audience in the same way the Tulsa Massacre was in HBO's Watchmen.

Maybe they used locations in the former Helmsley Palace hotel which was previously the Villard Houses on Madison Avenue between 59/51st street. It was built by McKim, Mead and White. It once had a wonderful pink marble interior made from irreplaceable bookcased marble in solid floor to ceiling slabs. This was broken up and torn out when a certain prince owned it, simply because he did not like pink. They used to do a lovely afternoon tea there, and maybe still do. It might be worth checking if you’re in New York.

I'm enjoying the series so far - I'm English and it's interesting to see this time in New York's history. I do loathe the Russells though - Mrs Russell is brash and just overplays her hand constantly and Mr Russell's behaviour at the bazaar was just cringeworthy. It's great tv, but I'm not convinced anyone including new money would behave in such a ghastly manner.

Instead it’s a numbing repeat of an interior that is probably not even a set. 🫤 very disappointing but learned something today.
