I live in a small town about 45 minutes from the nearest large city(There's nothing to do here, most of the jobs, recreational activities, businesses, etc closed down before I was 10.) & drugs have flooded this place. Life was easy-ish here until 2008 when the drugs hit, we went through stuff like pills, meth, crack, heroin, & oppiates. Meth, heroin, & opiates are still really bad here, people have nothing to do so they just do drugs. When I was a teenager the dumb shit I/we did was just smoking cigarettes/weed, I tried pills like 4 times & didn't like how it felt nor how the strung out adults looked.(I was never really into alcohol since my dad was a violent alcoholic) The kids here now are skipping weed & just doing hard drugs like heroin/meth because they see all the adults doing it & think it's cool. At least 20-30 of my classmates have died from suicide, drugs, or negligence/accidents(like texting & driving) before we even hit the age of 30. While I was in high school we had like 16 underage mothers from 9th-12th grade, even more if you count the middle schoolers.(While I was in 10th grade we had a pregnant 6th grader at our middle school.) My class was maybe 150 people at the most, the entire high school was only like 450 people. I'm 25 now, & out of my group of friends I'm one of the only ones who isn't dead, strung out on drugs, a parent before the age of 25-30(most below 18), doing dumb shit, or in jail/prison. Almost everyday there is bare minimum one report of a person passing out from an OD somewhere over the scanner, usually more like 5+ a day. That may not be a lot compared to a big city but for this small place that's a big portion of our population. My entire city(including all the little towns & stuff in its jurisdiction) only has a population of 10k & hundreds(maybe a thousand or more) of them are junkies. I had this all typed out way better/more detailed, but my phone died right before I was finished & I can't remember what all I said/how I did it. Nor do I want to put in all that effort because I'm pretty salty now after that lol.

That’s really sad, it’s ashame how these things happen. Multiple classmates of mine have died from ODs and other stupid things. Multiple people already have kids (I’m 23) and tons of people are on drugs. Heroin is a huge problem in my town, and Fentanyl is a growing problem. It truly is sad
@probablynotdad6553
@probablynotdad6553 5 жыл бұрын
@@AustinGonder Yeah, it's no longer Inner City America or Small Town America being slammed by drug addiction, the entire country is being rocked by it now, especially heroin. It's sad, no one is safe from it, even the kids of extremely well off people are being affected by this. Unfortunately it won't get better with the way America handles drugs/big farma currently. All this social justice bullshit aside I hope my generation and the one below us that is just coming of age can work together to squash as many of these problems we are facing as possible so that we can hand the next two unborn generations a better world. Sorry for any of your losses man(I was a big kid so I got bullied a ton), few people that I considered actual close friends are in that situation. We luckily all fucked up bad enough(or never got that bad to begin with) that it smacked the stupid out of us and showed us our possible futures if we didn't get our shit together.
@Eliath1984
@Eliath1984 5 жыл бұрын
I was about to chime in and say that it's not just a inner city or a small town issue.. the city I grew up in I had multiple people I knew(wasn't really friends with them) that had OD'd multiple times.. some succeeded in being no more.. a person or 2 that committed suicide before even graduating highschool because in his words even though he wasn't a druggy and his family was a fairly grounded family he said "I just don't feel... right in my own head" my hometown was somewhat of a hub for alot of much much smaller towns.. and it was one of those situations where we KNEW not to go to some of those towns. or when describing them to other people the sentence was started "When you start smelling burning tires.. you are almost there" I stuck around for about 30 years then as my kids started growing up into teenagers I just felt the extreme need to get out of there.. the areas that were supposed to be GOOD areas were getting smaller and smaller.

This song is a portrait of the street where I grew up, and I was one the drugs addicted, But I was rescued by God in time. My cousin gave me this CD back in 99 and definitely punk rock really shaped my character and I know that it was God’s permission, since I had nobody to guide me in the right way. Now I am a pastor and I used this song in one of my studies to the church ‘s youth, they loved 🙂 greetings from Brazil, great content guys!!

Oh my favourite Offspring song! Thank you! It's more serious than you would think from a California punk band. I haven't really understood that until I was 30. It' s really sad you are young, happy, talented. Everyone around you is more or less happy and has potential. And then you grow older and many people just don't make it. My first classmate died when I was 19, committed suicide. She was a really silent girl, I would never tought that. Many other lives of the kids I knew got destoyed. Some are still living in the past, reciting the moment they were really happy and thought everything was allright. I played basketball with a kid when we were teenagers. He won the town student championship with a basketball team. Later he lost his father, he got addicted, fell out of school. At the time I become 25 he was a total wreck. He used to come to the basketball court where we played (couldn't play anymore) and always told us: those were the times! We were so good, it was the time of our life. He just drifted away, he is now probably dead. One of my other childhood friends went bankrupt because of his own fault, his wife left him and took his daughter away. He always remembers us before his marriege, couple of friends partying together living a good, young life. He says that was the time of his life, now everything is rotten to him and he is unable to get out of it.

Listening to Vin talk about some of his childhood experiences here was some crazy deja vu. I could relate to so much of what he went through as a kid; never having a stable home, sticking in a homeless shelter for a few months and whatnot, then there's all those people I used to know who's lives just derailed off their track. Weird.

Y'all giving away Rancid is gonna finish this out has me excited as hell, I'm wondering if it's gonna be Ruby Soho, Fall Back Down or Time Bomb since those are usually the most popular suggestions. Offspring is great, loved them when I was coming up, the pop punk and post punk stuff got me into punk, which got me into metal. Ya know that cliche of a band saving you? Well, Offspring, Sum 41 and Blink 182 all were big parts of keeping me from killing myself as a teenager. The feeling of like, believing these singers 'got it'. Especially Blink 182, if ya can, check out Adams Song by them, thats a pretty similar song to this, when you come back of course.

In addition to some of 'The Offspring classics' already mentioned (Gone Away, All I Want, Come Out and Play etc - all excellent), I'd like to mention a not-so-well-known, fairly recent song called Hammerhead. The name of the song is also a reference to a song by The Who called "The kids are alright".

FYI the reason this song has this title is because it The Who in the 60s had a song called The Kids Are Alright basically saying hey parents get off our backs let us be free we are okay. And this song is saying it's a different time now. (I am not huge into the Offspring at this point but in esely high school this album was huuuuge. Lots of good songs)

The part where hes naming specific people is reminiscent of the song People Who Died by musician/author Jim Carrol who wrote the book The Basketball Diaries.

Offspring and this song were pretty popular at the time - on a commercial level. I'd also suggest 'Gone Away' by them and 'Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)' - the video for it is good for a laugh.

I'd only suggest to anyone listening to "Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)" that the joke nature of the song pops up here and there in their more popular songs, but their "better" stuff (and the majority of their catalog) is more serious, both musically and subject wise.

@@DamnTheManInc Yes, I agree. I only included that to show they also made some light-hearted songs for contrast (Why Don't You Get a Job) being another. I also like 'Self Esteem', 'Come Out and Play' and 'Gotta get Away'.

As a child of the 80’s and teen of the 90’s, The Offspring was huge for me and I listened to them right along with Metallica and Megadeth and the like. Their first few albums were packed with hits and they were one of the only “punk” bands that got consistent play on my local rock radio station. ‘Self Esteem,’ ‘Gone Away,’ and ‘Bad Habit’ are some of the greats from that time.

My favorite thing about this band is that the lead singer, and therefore the guy who wrote "Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)", has a PhD in Molecular Biology from USC.

Offspring, Sublime and Nirvana really represent Gen X and their outlook on life because so many of them experienced neglect, poverty and abuse. The first generation to be raised en mass by single mothers in the pink ghetto. In the early eighties we were often referred to as the first throw away generation because so many of our generation lived on the streets starting at a young age. Watch the movie Suburbia to get a perspective on this.

this song describes my neighbourhood. had a friend who had so much potential and we were best friends at the time but then he started taking drugs dropped out of college and now is in prison for the last two years. then my other classmate couldnt get into the college that he wanted so badly, and he was depressed and started drinking alcohol. i am really one of the few in my hood that made it to college and not drop out of it.

I haven't seen it suggested that much, but you should react to LAPD from The Offspring's 1993 album Ignition. Considering the release date and the name, you can probably guess what the song is about. It's sad how relevant the song is still.
