As a man who lives with bipolar and schizophrenia, it is a song that I put on when I start to lose the battles with my hallucinations or depression side of things. Sometimes both. It took me years to do it, but I found the strength to open up about my illnesses and I no longer hide them. It has cost me friends, because I refused to put up a poker face and play happy, but it has also kept me safe from myself. As I told someone else... it took me breaking the sound of silence and getting help that saved my life. When someone lives with depression in silence... they will die and it likely will be by their own hand.

David “the lead singer” said they covered this song from a perspective of anger at people for failing to heed the warning of the original song, that no one communicated with each other anymore, all they did was watch TV “the neon god”.. and instead of starting to communicate all we have done is replace tv with cell phones... he also said this was the hardest song he had ever sang... he is a classically trained opera singer, which sounds crazy for a metal singer haha... this was one of my fav songs as a kid in the 70s.. this and behind blue eyes by the who
@marcialavine12723 жыл бұрын
He was trained as a cantor, not in opera. Cantors lead services and sing service music, and they may seem indistinguishable from a cantorial soloist, who may also do those things. Both may have very good singing voices, and both may have had extensive musical training. The cantor, however, has something extra: a deep background in Jewish worship and Hebrew language, knowledge of both present and past liturgies, and training in leading and teaching a wide variety of Jewish musical forms. A cantor is clergy, qualified to officiate at all lifecycle events (weddings, funerals, namings) and to provide pastoral support.

One of the brilliant things about this song is the duality of the two main themes. Both light and sound are shown in two ways. There's the light of the neon god, the grand distraction, versus the natural light that actually reveals the truth. There's the silence that arises from the screaming of the gears of our ephemeral empires, against the true silence where introspection can arise. The abject social isolation, the dehumanization of the technological, is clearly stated here, and has only grown more poignant as we go further down the road in the direction of the neon god. Solid 10. The great songs echo down the years, because they talk about experiences that will always be part of being human.

This song was written in the 70s. He was predicting how life world would be for us. We speak on our phones (not speaking ) nobody to listen ( no reaction) songs not being heard they’re on our phones. The neon god we made Technology the most important thing our lives. Here we are in 2022 !!! When Paul Simon heard this version he told David this was now his song

"…we have people unable to touch other people, unable to love other people. This is a song about the inability to communicate." -Paul Simon I would have liked to hear this with Lzzy Hale in a harmony situation. He's worked with her in the past, and they sound amazing together. Also, the original conveyed the same message without being heavy-handed, BUT! Paul Simon himself actually liked the cover, so I'll default to the author's opinion on the matter.

S Toy My take is that the original was a polite warning about the detached direction humanity seemed to be taking, whereas Disturbed version is angry that nobody heeded this 50 year old warning, hence the more heavy handed nature of it. That's just my interpretation, though.

So thank you!, for sharing, and being the amazing people you are, and letting us experience such a powerful experience with you. On a huge side note, I thought you should know, if you watch your video at 4:32 (or just watch the original song or check the lyrics) that Disturbed snuck their band name and song title into the lyrics themselves as a small easter egg for people to catch! ".. and noone dared 'Disturbed the sound of silence' " :)

It's 2020 and I'm just now seeing this reaction. First, I love both of your reactions and what each of you took from the song. That was incredible and I believe this song can mean so many different things to different people. When Paul Simon wrote this song he was actually in a dark bathroom. "Hello darkness my old friend " there was light coming from a streetlamp outside. He stated is was the best contrast of light and dark to write. He said the meaning of the song is about communication or lack there of. You both hit on that part. And you are absolutely right on the neon God was about technology replacing communication. Neon lights had already been out for 40 plus years when the song was written but it was still an incredible attention getter. The sign flashing out its warning about the words of the prophets was in reference to there being knowledge and information all around you and you need to know where to look but with technology you won't see it when it's right in front of you. The original was definitely a warning to us all that technology would lead to us not communicating or truly being able to love each other. And we need to not get wrapped up in the technology. And look where we ate today. People say Disturbeds version is anger because we didn't heed the warning.

The original was written by Paul Simon in 1964, when Simon was 26. He said the words came to him when the lights were out. The song was one of the first huge hits by SIMON & GARFUNKEL. Art Garfunkel was his childhood friend. When he heard this cover, he called David Draiman (Disturbed lead singer) to compliment him on this version of a song considered by many to be one of the greatest songs of the 20th century. Draiman said in an interview he was “dumbfounded” that Simon called him!!

Yes, what an honor to have the songs creator compliment you on your cover. I never thought a cover could be as impressive as the original and in many ways it's quite impressive that a heavy metal band would do their cover as a piano-based version compared to Simon & Garfunkel's acoustic guitar version. You normally don't associate hardcore rockers with piano-based music. David's voice was like listening to Zeus singing from Mt Olympus with vocal bolts of liquid lightning being cast down upon us from the heavens.
