This may be the only song in Anemoi that is truly happy. Now I don’t mean it sounds happy, or even that it makes you feel happy, lots of the other songs do that. I mean that the song, and the singer that narrates it, sound like they are happy, beyond singing in a happy tone. Sure, songs like Constellations describe happy events like star-gazing rife with beautiful imagery, but they’re singed with a feeling of underlying conflict. Songs like Grow, New River, or Lapis Lazuli have a disposition of rebirth, that things will get better after the current hardships, but that’s not happiness; that’s simply hope that you can someday overcome your conflicts and become happy. But Soap, Soap is the overcoming of those conflicts. It is what the narrator wanted, coming to fruition. In the previous song, the singer laments that they want to help things grow. After Torches, Dry Branches, and Cold, they want to make something. Even if it’s just a single seed, they want to help it grow. And what happens here, right after that song? You see a flower grow. All the other songs say “you’ll be alright. There’s a light at the end of the tunnel. It’ll get worse before it gets better, but it will get better.” But Soap says “it’s finally better.”

This song felt like a tight, reassuring hug. Not too soft, or too gentle,- the firm kind, with hands quickly rubbing down your back and sides as if to insist “you’ll be okay, you’ll be okay.” I didn’t even think I needed to hear the words in this song, but I did, and it comforts me so much.

People without depression lovingly say "It will be fine!" and it doesn't land. People who know what depression feels like say "It's gonna hurt like h*** but we're gonna be well". I love the compassion that people have for others who suffer. But I am so grateful for the compassion the sufferers have for others. I see the face of God in it; Christ suffered so he could say that last line and have the power to make it true. "And he shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind; and this that the word might be fulfilled which saith he will take upon him the pains and the sicknesses of his people. "And he will take upon him death, that he may loose the bands of death which bind his people; and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities."

I finally found out why “you’re worth keeping around/holding onto” was such a big staple in this song! In the song Theseus, they’re rebuilding themselves and their lives as they grow and change with the world and each other, and they lament over how there are parts of their lives they want to keep and mend instead of throwing away. In this song, they admit that one of the things they want to keep is the person they love because they’re worth the pain of it all, which is BIG since in Boreas, one of the characters was saying they’d rather self-sacrifice so they’re useful to their significant other, but here the significant other is saying they don’t have to because they are already enough. I am terribly and wholly sane, I assure you.

This song and Constellations hit me hard. I've seen these EPs as the story of the journey someone takes to unlearn toxic ideas about how the world works and facing the consequences of that change of perspective within themselves and in the world around them. And as a white Catholic woman from a conservative family, I've had a lot of that to do this year. Constellations hits hard because it's the realization that your original perspective is flawed and the beauty and terror of that realization carries through the rest of the EPs. The shift in perspective is hidden then exposed in Eurus, faced with social outcasting in Boreas, and then comes out stronger and even forgiving in Zephyrus. This song is the sort of the end of this "Round" (see what I did there?). It's walking up to those people who you still love who taught you those toxic ideas and showing them your perspective shift and how you got there. It's having those tough conversations at Thanksgiving about why your perspective on certain social issues have changed. It's about making the choice not to turn your back on some of those people and saying "I still think you're worth keeping around," and guiding them to their own "Constellations moment." Of course, some people are actually assholes, and some people are toxic to their core and completely unsalvageable. And, of course, these songs could have many different meanings to many different people and all of those interpretations are 1000% valid! But I look at some of the members of my family and see the people I love confused by hateful ideologies, and songs like this help me verbalize what I'm feeling and give me hope that someday, maybe with a little prodding, they'll figure it out like I did. And "Rounds" is a reminder that my own self-reflection should never be considered "done" - it's a cyclical process that requires self-assessment all the time to make sure I'm not falling into old patterns or ignoring better new ones. Sorry didn't mean to write a short essay there. Just have a lot of feelings about this album and needed to get it out. I love these EPs dammit.

I really liked you writing. And i've read all the "essay". Thanks for showing me how you get these songs. I love the idea that there are songs that mean a lot to people and when you hear them you fill whole inside. I am happy for you, for getting out of the things that are bad for you, and for that you still didn't push away the important people in your life, they can accompany the journey that you do, and maybe do a one themselves- one about acceptance and they may evolve more from there, but don't get your hopes high about that being quickly. Thank you again for that comment, one of the first times hearing this song. Stumbled upon this band only yesterday. I love it already.

This hits really hard for me, especially because I had to go to intensive therapy and this is nearly the exact supporting feeling they gave off! The "it's gonna hurt like hell" especially because it gave me panic attacks and in the end it was really worth it ❤
