The Oh Hellos

Күн бұрын

From the EP Boreas
released September 4, 2020
Produced by Maggie Heath, Tyler Heath
Written by Maggie Heath, Tyler Heath
Performed by The Oh Hellos
lyrics:
with my back on the floor
cold linoleum icing my growing pains
watch the ceiling fan turn its shape again
my threads are coming loose
yeah, I’m one spoon away
from setting the ends of my hair on fire
if I’m kindling for a little while
at least I’d feel of use
maybe then my breath could embody
a wildfire starting
I’d sweep up the forest floor
and my body breathe life into the corners
be a darker soil
making lists, folding laundry,
keeping tidy with my radio show
I’d be lying if I told you
I’m keeping tidy anymore
yeah, I swing from believing
that maybe my working will all pay off
to considering drinking with Molotov
I’m halfway out the door
promise me that you’ll start
where I end
and I promise to give you everything
that I am
we’ll go on and on and on again
in the end, all I hope for
is to be a bit of warmth for you
when there’s not a lot warmth left
to go around

I really like this song, and the possible direction that Boreas is going to go. Eurus and Notos were all so large, and grand, and about problems in the world that towered far over human beings as a collective group. Their circular motif had to be about how we perpetuate the same harmful cycles over and over. But Boreas sounds like... something softer. Someone who wants to break a cycle in their life but can't yet - so they utilize it. They pass this cycle onto someone else, asking them to "start where I end; and I promise to give you everything I am; we'll go on and on again." The promise of a cycle that won't end. I interpreted as generational love, like from mother to child. That maybe there are some cycles worth keeping. I really like that. It's small, but it's significant.

I love the way you've interpreted the song, and I also like how it points out the small little thoughts we have, thoughts we consider insignificant, and makes them important. Of course. I haven't read the lyrics yet, but still, it seems like it's picking thoughts and feelings out of our heads and writing them down for the entire world to see and hear. Like holding out your heart, and watching as people choose to value it, and understand it. Maybe they won't, but that's okay, because they'll find warmth in other places, and you have enough to give if they decide to come back. Kind of derails from the song, but that's what it feels like to me.

This is the kind of song you need to listen to on a cold day that feels like early morning the whole way through, when you need to forget about the mechanical parts of everything you do and remember that you are a living unit, a machine of flesh and blood, tuned so perfectly to the breath that turns the wheels inside of you, all timed so that the organic machinations of your unit live as their own ecosystem, ebbing and flowing and coursing in time to the music. Or, you know, when u feel like it, idk.

You know, I haven't quite been excited about autumn this year until I read your comment, despite it being my favorite season. The aspens turn gold where I live, blazing brighter than sunshine when they catch the light, but the first snowfall often arrives right before Halloween and steals the magic off of the trees. For weeks, before the snows start falling regularly, it's neither autumn nor winter. The world becomes withered and brown, seemingly mourning missed potential, the trees neither blazing nor frosted. But what we do have is those cold days, when the sky is washed blue and the withering grasses look comforting in the morning light as the dawn reveals hints of stubborn crimson in the undergrowth. I know Boreas is an album made for the dead of winter, but this song and your comment reminds me a little of those days. This year, should the cold come quick enough to kill everything and then flit away until late November, I think I'll still enjoy that season within a season. I think I can learn to savor the clean blue sky and russet world and the wild wind. I used to live in a place with no seasons. It was always mild, always predictable, always plastic. Here, even if the cold comes faster than you'd like, the world is alive. You breathe in the earthy, spruce-tinged air and remember that you, too, are alive. You put on this kind of song as you walk through the woods (or as a crisp breeze ripples in from a window) and all that is in you really does ebbs and flow in time to the music. And then when winter comes the sky really does take on a soft, dawn-like color and the snow twinkles and I remember each year that winter is never death, just the world resting and remembering so it can come back to life in time.

My rabbit died on December 25, this song always put him to sleep. When he was about to die, I put this song on him, he fell asleep and minutes later he started kicking, he left, in my arms he died and this song only makes me cry more. It hit really close for me too, I got covid in April and I’m still struggling with extreme fatigue, pain and heart/lung symptoms even now and it’s made doing all the things I’d normally do, like my (very demanding) job or just keeping the house clean, nearly impossible. To me this song really captures that feeling of wanting to be strong, wanting to be busy, having all this fierce hope and determination but just being physically and/or emotionally incapable of doing anything with it.

Man, some of these lines hit me like a spear through the heart. They're just...so spot-on for my life??? "Yeah, I’m one spoon away From setting the ends of my hair on fire If I’m kindling for a little while, At least I’d feel of use" Sometimes it really does feel as if I'm completely worthless/useless, especially during the pandemic when I've fallen into depression and rarely do anything productive or joy-inducing. I'd do anything to help another person, even if it meant hurting myself in the process. I already sabotage myself, so at least I'd be making something useful of it, right? "Yeah, I swing from believing that maybe my working will all pay off to considering drinking with Molotov I’m halfway out the door " This part is kind of self-explanatory. Some days feel good, and I really believe everything is gonna be okay. Some days feel awful, like there's no point to anything and I may as well just die. Sometimes I dance on rays of sunshine, and sometimes I just lie down and rot. But most of the time, I'm in this kind of limbo state ("halfway out the door"), not feeling much at all. "In the end, all I hope for is to be a bit of warmth for you when there’s not a lot warm left To go around" That's all any person can really hope or strive for - to make the world a better place, even if only a little bit, or for only one person. And in a world like this, we need that warmth now more than ever. I'd like to add that I especially love how the song ending feels more like the song being interrupted or purposefully left unfinished... It means it's not really the end.

Ok, second time through, this time reading lyrics and I cannot express the warmth I feel from this song. It makes me think of Aubrey and Dani from the Adventure Zone amnesty in the way of a soft and young relationship that is growing and burning with light and love, but now stable enough to be warm and comfortable. The earthy roots and soft acoustic that I’ve always loved from you all, 10/10. BLEW it out of the park

It's true what they say-music really is the universal language. When I first listened to this song at the beginning of the school year, I was going through some pretty rough times. It spoke to something deep inside me then- but I didn't know what it was. I think, coming back here after the year has finished, that I know now. Longing. I'm doing ok, better then I was then-and I know that if I ever feel down again, the hallowing winds of the winter will be there to listen.

several family members and friends up and died this past decade and 2020 is of no exception. Spent decade burrying people I cared for. Pets too. So... when I heard this song, while writing a chapter about a character in a short story suffering a similar loss. I couldn't help but feel lifted up and oddly crying tears of relief as I remembered them. All the wonderful things about them. All the wonderful things they instilled in me and frankly inspired the world I was writing. I think... when I remember them saying "It'll be okay. Live your life to the fullest." it's... it's just deep. They gave everything they could in spite how little we had. I miss them. I love them. I just wanna give my all too. Pay it forward to everyone I still have. This song is so simple... so profound. Thank you for sharing it with us. With me. I think I can let go now.

I'm currently reading, about to finish, a book called "Greenwood" by Michael Christie, then just now stumbled upon this wonderful song. Never even heard of the band before. I know that it isn't the case, but I can't help but think that they wrote this song about exactly that book. It just fits so perfectly, and I'm lucky to have discovered both exactly when I did.

Your comment got me to check out the book at the library, and it’s absolutely wonderful! I’d forgotten which song it was that reminded someone of the book so I listened to all of The Oh Hellos albums I could, and it was a wonderful experience. I have a new favorite book now, so thanks, stranger :)

I know Maggie has endometriosis, and as a spoonie myself this really resonates to that part of me. I wonder if that's partly what this is about? Regardless, every album since 2014 when I found you guys has made me fall in love a little more. the best band out there.

Sounds possible! If you don't mind my asking, what would the spoon refer to? I was curious about that lyric...

My wife used that metaphor to help me understand her own physical issues and general lack of energy a while back (which though similar are not endometriosis) - she didn't know that about Maggie (I told her), but before that she said she really related to this song and to Maggie when she checked her out on twitter.

This album really helped me out when i was grieving. It taught me about learning to love again, and it also taught me how to love in a different way. I had a hard time with grieving due to my step dad not really letting me do so. My great grandpa was someone I loved, even though his visits were rare and only happened when i was a kid. Even though he didn't remember me in his final years, i remembered him. I remembered how to grieve, and remembered how to love when my mother let me have time to myself. I learned that grieving is not just about being sad. It's also loving someone and missing them when you can no longer call or visit. This song is actually that was on when my mom told me the news. Sorry for the long comment folks, thanks for taking the time to read it.

The end of this song reminds me of that verse in the Bible where it warns that "the love of many will wax cold." "To be a little warmth for you when there's not a lot of warmth to go around", building off Rose that mentions love.

Man this hit close. I feel like I have so little energy left and I've felt so emotionally exhausted for years now. It's such a struggle to do mundane things like take care of myself and talk to people, and the only time I feel happy is when I'm being useful to others. I've wanted to just die for so long so that I can just, like, actually rest, and the only reason I haven't is that I don't want to abandon the people who rely on me.
