In the 10 years or so that I worked with him, he went through 2 ex wives, as they both left him for the same reason: gambling addiction. He ended up owing people over $1 million. Even from the early stages of the investigation only people who can't judge character, can't think logically, and are very, very stupid were claiming that Ohtani was " guilty " - as if they knew something besides all the evidence indicating he wasn't . Ippei made a decision to be a back-stabbing scumbag and he renewed that choice every day for years while masquerading as Shohei's close friend. The fact that he is now whining about being "underpaid" at 80-200k/yr and being "on call 24/7" for a guy who sleeps 9 hrs/day and only goes to the ballpark, shows the depth of his remorse - like if he had been paid more he wouldn't have stolen from Shohei? How much more Ippei ? Would 5 million/yr have been enough? What's obvious is that no conceivable amount of salary would have prevented him from doing exactly what he did. I don't like long prison sentences because they are a huge public expense, and because our culture has no balls left we don't have work camps and chain gangs where prisoners could actually pay for their keep. He should be on the hook for the full amount the rest of his life.

Japanese school does not teach students about money much. Ohtani is obviously ignorant and Ippei who grew up in US must be knowledgeable. Ichiro had his english-fluent wife who supported him when he came to US. NPB should introduce financial literacy courses in the rookie program for highschool graduates.

Shohei has never had to worry about money ever. Right out of high school he played in the NPB for the Nippon Ham Fighters. While playing on the team he lived in a dorm with other players. His mom managed his income and set aside an allowance for Shohei per month. The team took care of the players. On top of that his mom was taking care of his finances. Once on the Angels he became a millionaire. The man has never had to think about or consider bills or his bank account ever. I believe the NFL has a discussion with rookies about finances when they first enter the league. But I don't think the MLB does.
