i took my Old Hickory and scuffed it, blued it with cold blue and later decided to polish it with a mild compound and it gave it a very unique look some of the nooks and crannys had the blue in em but over all the blade glowed from the polish, i try and do a vid but dont know if the camera will show the detail

Just to add a bit of history for the uses for these old knives or brand. These knives were just about exclusively used in the Commercial fishing industry for over a hundred years. In 1967, 68 and 69 I was going to sea on grouper boats out of PUNTA GORDA, Florida; which the fleet stayed out for 10 days to 21 day on average. The only knife I ever saw was the old Hickory knives. Some were pretty rusty and worn out and sticking in the wood somewhere on deck. They were typically the slimmer bladed knife and in many respects better than the butchers knife design but I do recall seeing them too. They are all good. I've seen the old Hickory knives on boats for well over a decade before being retired with not much more than a quarter of an inch in blade width. Once they got to this condition; overboard they went and drew a new one or salvaged a neglected old one and used it for the next several years. I have a scar to prove their sharpness. I never forgot the brand OLD HICKORY; because it laid my hand open as easy as gutting a fish. The captain soaked my hand in sea water with Joy dish soap and taped it up; that's it. No doctors out there. So; I was told I have to take care of my knife and I would only got one. If I lost it overboard I would have to use a kitchen knife. You rinsed it off everyday maybe several times in a day and sharpened it and oiled it before going to bed. Commercial fishing is no game; it's hard on the fishermen and hard on on anything made from steel. We generally bound the handles in twine and coated the binding with rubber cement or paint to seal off the steel under the handles. Bush craft and camping is certainly easier on a knife than commercial fishing.

I've made some of the same mods you have to my own Old Hickory butcher knife. You mentioned a hot spot and I noticed the same thing. I sanded down the corners and rounded the handle a bit. Hot spot gone! Finished it off with some linseed oil. I think a standard butcher knife is made for draw cuts. When we repurpose to bushcraft and start using a lot of push cuts and pushing motion its not surprising that the handle might need a little reshaping. Good vid. Thank you.

I'd expect to see a thicker blade on a knife of this size, and maybe the handle could use a few improvements, but WOW that is a lot of knife for the price. In this price range we really have no right to complain about a thing. It's a great looking knife too, I love the blade shape. I'm a big fan of Ontario. Thanks for sharing this demonstration!
@HighCarbonSteelLove9 жыл бұрын
Smell N Roses Yes, most knives this size will have a thicker blade. I think because this is a butcher knife, it has a thinner profile for detailed processing of game and kitchen work. For the price, it is an outstanding knife. I love how well it strikes a spark and the longer blade allows for more surface are to strike with a piece of chert/flint. It also takes and holds an edge well. No chipping or rolling after things I have put it through. Ontario is a great knife company! Based off of this one, I may just need to pick up a few more Ontario knives. The factory is about an hour away from where I live. Thanks for watching, my friend! -Dave

Great video review. Got to love these knives, 1095 carbon steel, as thick as a Mora, American made, Simple and ready for mods, Great heat treat and good hardness (try drilling through one), and low price. Not saying they should replace some of my modern quality knives but if it was all I had, it would do the job. Very much what the early montain men carried, and a great knife for the Horace Kephart mod, that knife blade served him well.

see, that's exactly why I won't buy from Dave. single carry option? man. pretty damn sure it wasn't dirt cheap and for the effort that was put in, what would it hurt to at least add scout straps and a single? come the fuck on man. I'm making mine from scratch for my hickory. and probable for pennies to the dollar. and I carve fine with mine. maybe I got a better or more steady hand, maybe more patients, can't be a better knife, they are all the same. I don't have a single issue with mine. and it has a 4.5 inch back up I keep with it. as far as the handle, a tip is to pull the wood plates and put your own handle on it. I plan to do a pretty extensive paracord wrap on mine. not because I want extra paracord, I see no logic in pulling cordage off your blade handle, but I do it because I like the feel and grip.

Say Heah David, A Happy Father's at Wish, Anyhow, I just pulled the trigger on my BK-20 which reminds me of a large butcher knife on steroids. But I plan on using it as a Summer Long Knife since I feel it's a long enough blade at 10.8" but a 1/4" thick blade, Ouch, it's a little on the heavy sure, But being well balanced they say it feels lite. Nice knife, performed all the tasks very well. Certainly didn't have any trouble splitting the wood. +7319dexter I am sorry to hear that your Old Hick had sentimental value. I am not sure on how to straighten the blade, however, if needed, you could always buy a new one. I know its not your 1st choice but they are very inexpensive. -Dave
@dwightehowell60628 жыл бұрын
+7319dexter Just about any smith can straighten it by heating it and beating it rather gently. I would normally not advise that because it would mean you need to remove the scales and would need to re temper the blade but the fact that your blade bent rather than broke when bent to far suggests that somebody already managed to ruin the temper someway most likely by getting the blade to hot. Talk to a knife maker.

Say Heah Dave. I got the Stromeng KS -9 Leuku as my Old Hickory, I find the Leuku being the predecessor for the Old Hickory. Their very similar in design. The Leuku was used as a One Tool Option by the Saami People, and even weman use them and they start off children with a Leuku at a very young age, But their Leuku's are smaller. Yeah, I got a 3Knife Set. I have the KS-9 it's in Carbon Steel, The KS-5 and the Bhuku STAK ate in Stainless because knives under 7", Stromeng only makes in stainless, They use the 12c27 stainless which is also used in Ice Skates. Pretty good stuff. anyhow, I use my KS-5 for food prep. But it's a good lite camp knife regardless. The Brass is Holy for the Saami People. so yeah, my Stromeng have a Brass Pommel and a Brass band that hokd's the blade pretty good. I could baton with mine since it is a Stick Tang, but obviously well tempered since mine are holding up good. I use them in my Traditional carry. I use them with my G. B. Small Fotest Axe and a Bob's Buck Saw which is my Traditional Set. and I have a friend that made a very nice Leuku out of a 14" Old Hickory Knife. His came out great. But I'm very happy with my Stromeng Leuku. Oh, F. Y. I. the aftermarket Ka-Bar U. S. M. C. Sheaths fit the 7" Old Hickory Butcher Knives.,,.

I bought an "antique" one at a yardsale for $1.50!! It is so old and used the imprint lines across the length of the blade (on a new one) are almost invisible! Yet it still has a 90° spine and I can get it super sharp. I put a large ranger band on the whole handle. It gives a much better grip and reinforces the "supposedly" weak rivets. My favorite line of fixed blades, great knives to do knife work. The one I use the most is this knifes lesser known big brother the 8" slicing knife, same blade stock and handle just a different profile, based on a frontier era english trade knife style, I just find it more aesthetically pleasing and equally useful. I'm not nice to these knives and have never had any problems with the blades or with the grips coming loose, even using the 14" butcher knife as a machete to cleave through 2" frozen hardwood repeatedly and batoning it, they are tough enough and will break only if that's your intention, which is true of any knife.

Good video, as always. Would slightly reshaping the handle to get rid of the hot spot be an option? Keep up the good work! -Bas

Out and About West Thanks for the kind words! Nice to hear from you! Some work on the handle could definitely be an option but it really isn't too bad. I appreciate you stopping by, my friend! -Dave

the handle is held on with compression rivets. When they come apart and they will save the pieces and epoxy everything back together and it will not come apart again. Those are good knives are a good bang for the money. There are several mods you can do with them. I made a Kephart clone with one of them.

wow I have one of these knives, it was only £9,99 form amazon delivered to the uk . But its just been sat in a draw, mainly down to the fact it hasn't got a sheath ...but now i know there is one I will be using it a lot more for game prep etc atb Bruce

Ginger Bruce Hey, Bruce, how is everything going, my friend? Great to hear from you! I was also thinking of going without the sheath, initially, but I knew I would not use a knife without a sheath, so it would have sat without a sheath. Amazon also has a KA-BAR sheath that fits this knife perfectly, but I wanted a thicker leather sheath so I got this package from thepathfinderstore.com. Having a nice fitting sheath is half the fun, brother! I look forward to talking with you again soon! -Dave

KNIFEJUNKIE 13 Thanks for taking the time to watch, brother! I appreciate the kind words! Jeff is a great guy with an outstanding channel! The modified drop point sounds cool. I have seen Ontario's bigger butcher knives, too. I am not much of a large blade user, but I do love this old hickory. I am much more of a Morakniv guy, myself. Thanks, again, my friend and it's great to have you here! -Dave

Adam Alford A vid I saw on KZbin showed that the cheap magnesium in the HF product had trouble lighting. Look for it on KZbin vs. others.

Another very nice video. Your sound and video quality are very good. With out that mike, It sounds like it would have been a marginal day for recording. I liked your review and demo of the knife even though, In my humble opinion, I still think it's a "bottom drawer butcher knife.." :-D I agree it's a very good price for a carbon steel knife. And yes, it throws wonderful sparks.. I just think its too long to be a practical wood carver, and too thin to be a practical wood splitter on a regular basis. If I'm going to have a longer blade like that, I would prefer something with more mass. It gets by just fine in a pinch but so will most kitchen knives.. :-) That being said. I find it much more interesting watching someone skillfully handle a knife like this, like you just did, as opposed to someone wielding some $300 super blade..

saradreaming Thanks for the kind words, Sara! I appreciate hearing from you! Thanks for the compliment on the sound & quality. I learned from my early videos and in order to film in all conditions, a mic is absolutely necessary. I am not really a "big" knife fan, myself, but I have friends that swear by this knife so I needed to see what the hype was about. Its not tremendous at one thing (except throwing sparks!), but very functional at several things. A thicker knife would be much for comfortable to baton with and smaller blades excel at carving but this one can do a little of both. This wont replace my Moras but it will be fun to take into the woods and play around with. Thank you, very much, for taking the time to watch and comment! -Dave

Say Heah Dave, Shades of Baucus. Everytime I see a Ole Hickory Modification it reminds me of my Stromeng KS-9 Leuku. Suprisingly it's a pretty strong knife even though it has a StickTang. So they must of Tempered it right. Infact Lars Munson Crossed Canada using his Stromeng KS-9 Leuku as his Belt Knife. Yeah I like it. But for our type of wood, I really like my Bark River Golok in A2 with Ghost Green Jade g-10 handle. Infact I have a 4Knife Set of Bark Rivers, My Woodland Special which I use as my Neck Knife, My Bravo 1 which I also have (2) in 3V also, I love that knife. My Bravo 2 and the Golok, all in A2 with Ghost Green Jade g-10 handles. A choose and pick.,,. p
