Ex-Army Commando Roy Cadman explains how the toggle rope worked, how handy it was, and how it was used to scale cliffs and cross bridges.
'The Old and the Bold' is just one of the community projects being run by the National Army Museum as part of its 'Building for the Future' redevelopment project.

Love the way he describes the Italian scenery as “ pretty grim” Depends if you taking a snap from your car or climbing it on a freezing night with 50lbs of weapons, ammo and kit

Beautiful comment. I also found that phrase strange. Certainly there is a disconnect between romantic movies on TV &c. and what they went through!

I've got my scouts making these by whittling their own toggle and splicing both ends. Looking forward to having them be used in a team exercise.

Best to teach them how to do an Eye splice each end of the rope, that way they can produce an easily joinable section less the unnecessary toggle. Our Australian "toggle" ropes have always lacked the toggle, simply an Eye splice at each end.

This is what you just can't get at the civilian level of work most of the time, this level of teamwork and coordination. Although there are some, such as most first responder roles.

You ever been on a search and rescue team of 40 guys looking for injured mountaineers in -15 at 4000 feet?

@@Jafmanz You know, I'm gonna edit my comment, because you're absolutely right. Many first responder type roles require this kind of coordination and camaraderie. In fact, it's why they often pull from those with military background. Thanks!

How long were the ropes ?
@mysss29
@mysss29 4 жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly, Wikipedia says 6 feet, which bears out if you look at the photo of the bridge there. I highly doubt it's 2.5m, which is 8 ft. 2.5 in. and ought to look a lot longer in the pictures--longer than anyone's armspan, which is about how long those ropes look to be. (My armspan is about six feet exactly and I'm about 5'11", for example. Yours is probably closer to 6'4".) Of course, you could have ended up with some longer ones, but it might be you're overestimating a bit?

Okay, it seems I may be mistaken, since this magazine article specifies 8 foot length. books.google.com/books?id=hkKB0gqVg_IC&pg=PA12&lpg=PA12&dq=splice+toggle&source=bl&ots=WR84BOc65H&sig=ACfU3U2mj8q_3tbky27iiR_rHQGcvvvpMQ&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjK0Zfs7YXmAhUnhOAKHWp5D-YQ6AEwEnoECAsQAQ#v=onepage&q=splice%20toggle&f=false
