An early concept was that Wirt and Greg would be riding a train. They'd grow suspicious that the train was leading them to death and jump off, ending up in a limbo world. Instead of main antagonist, Beast would be a sort of "non-villain" who would just be doing his best to get the boys back on the train. The concept ended with the boys deciding to face their problems, only to find out that the train was taking them back to life.

I think they escaped death because they defeated the beast, and went home that would understand how they saw all those dead people. I just think this song is just like "Don't die not yet this isn't your time" which is why they're in the unknown, maybe the world between the dead and alive and they come out alive in the end

There's an old black train a-comin' Scraping 'long the iron You don't need no ticket, boys It'll take you when it's time Oh come on now, young stranger Weren't you someone's son? How'd you find this depot 'Cause it ain't where you belong You will pass a graveyard Stones worn by the year The train will stop a minute But don't let it leave you here The coachman is my brother The engineer's my friend We'll get you more acquainted By the time you reach the end This journey is a long one It'll take you all around Life rushin' by your window Before it lays you down Now where this old train's goin' You can't come back from Leave your baggage here because We'll need it when you're gone

The long black train is life and it's stop at the graveyard which is death and its final destination is heaven or hell. That's why it takes you all around and takes along time.

It kind of a symbol of life, “You can leave your baggage here Because we'll need it when you're gone” means that once you die, everything you did and the impact you had will stay with everyone. It’s a great message and a beautiful song

My take on this song, is that the Old Black Train is sort of like Hell in a way. Or the vehicle to Hell, and the conductor is the Beast, and the engineer is the woodsman.

I'm a guitarist, and I can help. The chorus begins with a G chord (There's an old black train a-comin', scraping 'round the iron, you don't need no...) and at the word "ticket", switch to C. Then it goes, "...boys, it'll take..." to a D chord at the word "take", and then "...you when it's time", it's back to a G on the word "time". Keep doing that pattern for the whole song.

No one's gonna take this idea from my mind that the boys actually were killed by the train and the "loviest lies of all" is just the author saying that he would prefer to lie in the end - that the boys lived - while the truth is that they died.

@@shrekwazowski8199 No, their point is that it's purgatory. They're hovering in a state between life and death, not yet dead but very near it, and their "test" to get back to life is leaving the Unknown. They almost died, almost being hit by a train, rolling down a hill and being plunged into a river, but were able to be saved and resuscitated. They aren't Lazarus lol
