Rubie Evergreen and Foreign Wun the show isn’t perfect as said by Patrick McHale (the creator). He added things like the black turtles and calls them “an imperfection in the quilt”. “The loveliest lie of all” was the one the beast sold to the woodsman: that he could keep his daughter alive in the lantern. Wirt, thankfully, confronted the Unknown with discernment and confidence (that he gained throughout the show as he grew as a person) and defeated the beast’s lie with truth. That is why most of the people at the end are better off for having encountered Greg and Wirt. That is also *the spirit of Halloween itself….* in that, as young children, we are terrified by the fictitious “beasts” and monsters around us, but as we grow older learn to appreciate the October season and Halloween as a celebration of pretending; and enjoy the myths of our own creation, now grown up enough to know they’re not really real and just for fun 😊

Each line of the song foreshadows a specific episode, in chronological order. "Led through the mist" The first episode starts with them lost in the woods, walking through the mist. "By the milk light of moon" In the second episode, the light of the moon marks the night, which js the time the skeletons rise from the graves. "All that is lost is revealed" In the third episode, the fiancé that was lost is revealed to be inside a costume. "Our long bygone burdens" In the fourth episode, the bygone burdens are the people who were lost to the forest and remembered by the people in the tavern. "Mere echoes of the spring" In the fifth episode, the echoes are the inhabitants in the giant mansion, both living together but unaware of each other, lost inside their own houses. "But where have we come?" In the sixth episode, they finally arrive at Adelaide and discover that they didn't come to the place they were led to believed they would. "And where shall we end?" In the seventh episode, they are without a guide and without a plan to get home, and uncertain about their destiny as the beast lurks in the woods. "If dreams can't come true" In the eighth episode, Greg decides during his dream to sacrifice himself for Wirt, and his wish does come true. "Then why not pretend?" In the nineth episode, we discover that the kids are actually from the present time and got lost after a Halloween night. "How the gentle wind / Beckons through the leaves / As autumn colors fall Dancing in a swirl / Of golden memories / The loveliest lies of all" The last lines are all about the last episode. The "gentle wind" is actually a strong wind that brings Beatrice to Wirt. It is gentle not because it's weak, but because it brings them together. The leaves are Greg's, because he was turned into a tree. The autumn color falling is not just his leaves, but his life leaving him as he becomes pale. The beast offers to keep his soul inside the lantern. The golden memories of Greg's life are contained in the dancing flame. However, Wirt understands that the Beast is lying, and the flame is the Beast's own soul. That's why it's the loveliest lie; because it frees the souls of those who were captured by the Beast. Of course, the song can also be interpreted with a much more melancholic tone, as the lyrics are both direct references to the plot and elements of a song with its own meaning. Instead of portraying an optimistic end, the song talks about how, faced with the impossibility of accepting death, we maintain the memory of life as a lie. This is not new, as it is quite straightforward, but the fact nobody talked about it was bugging me so I decided to comment on it, thanks for listening to my TEDTalk.

The reason Anna, the Woodsman's daughter, shows up in the ending is simple and already stated by the Woodsman: "She was never in the Lantern." Although Anna ended up meeting the Beast after wandering into the woods, she managed to get away safely. Unfortunately, the Woodsman had already gone looking for Anna by the time she got back to the house. When the desperate Woodsman runs into the Beast, it didn't take long before he started believing that the Beast had captured Anna, prompting the Woodsman to steal the Lantern, and thus beginning his long and dark ordeal in the forest.

You do know that the show pretty much certainly plays in some form of purgatory, right? The boys nearly drowned and landed there. Both the huntsman and his daughter are long long (judging by the technology they lived late 19th early 20th century) dead and he finally saw her after accepting the (premature) death of his daughter and after "moving on"

Over the Garden Wall impressed me. It was not at all what I had expected it to be. The greatest part of it is that it is very deep. Everyone expected them to end up finding their way back, but then found out that their bodies had never moved, and hardly any time had gone by. That leaves the audience to decide what happened based upon the episodes and of course, the song lyrics. It's just... awesome.

An Explanation of The Beast, The Unknown, The Ending, and The Theme Song (long, major spoilers). Wirt and Greg made it back. The song is about The Unknown, and how the lost souls that inhabit it are incapable of moving on because they can't come to terms with what happened in their lives or they have mistakes they can't forgive themselves for. The "loveliest lies of all" keep them existing in false happiness (like the woodsman and his lamp) - this line probably also refers to The Beast, as it was his goal to keep the souls in his forest. We can tell Wirt and Greg made it back because (spoilers, if you haven't guessed by now) they re-awoke in the river. Had they actually died, they would have physically walked out of the forest and reunited with their friends / gone back home as was their goal in the beginning of the show (as in, there would have been a gathering of some sorts that welcomed them out of the forest with open arms). They weren't aware they were in The Unknown (limbo/purgatory), so they would have never expected to suddenly be back in the river. The Unknown is a real place, and the souls there (beatrice, the woodsman) are real people. At the end of the show, Greg's frog still has a bell from The Unknown, and this confuses many people (kinda myself as well) and makes them wonder if they are actually back or if they had died. My interpretation is that The Unknown isn't a traditional afterlife where only your soul can go to and from, but more like a Narnia / other-side-of-the-mirror type of place that allows you to physically bring back memories and little mementos - otherwise, it'd be like waking up from a dream and none of it would have actually happened. We can tell this isn't the case because Wirt and Greg had a shared experience, and Greg was recounting their adventures at the hospital, so it all happened. Some people say the end of the show was anticlimactic, but I thought it was perfect. If The Unknown is a place souls go to where they come to terms with what they've done, or make up for past mistakes, or get over some personal problem that's preventing them from moving on, then the ending accomplished this perfectly. Greg admitted he'd stolen the rock and wanted to atone for it. Wirt finally realized what a pushover he was and got some confidence, took charge of his life, and rescued his brother, and the two left the forest together and returned to their lives. Beatrice learned compassion (by not giving the boys to Adelade / The Beast) and so made up for her treatment of the bluebirds and moved on to be with her family. The woodsman realized his daughter was gone and was able to move on, out of The Unknown, and return to her. Bravo!

the idea of afterlife would make sense though too because of how dated everyone is.

@azzypoo5 жыл бұрын
Dehtrasc0n true, but the issue isn’t runtime, it’s the nature of how it was written. it’s an episodic series - the episodes aren’t like a netflix show, or something like that, where it’s one big long story. It has an overarching plot but it’s focused more on different scenarios that each serve its own specific and important scenario that wouldn’t be accomplished in a standard animated feature unless it was very experimental in its story structure - and at that point it’s no different than a miniseries, just without credits, which there isn’t much point to. A miniseries is perfect for what OtGW is. It could be released in theaters as a big long binge fest, that would be amazing, and really cool to see a movie, especially with how studies want movies to be, wouldn’t work for otgw

"Led through the mist, by the milk-light of moon, All that was lost is revealed; Our long bygone burdens, mere echoes of the spring! But where have we come? And where shall we end? If dreams can't come true...then why not pretend: How the gentle wind beckons through the leaves, As autumn colours fall, Dancing in a swirl of golden memories, the loveliest lies of all... The loveliest...lies... of all." (POTENTIAL SPOILERS BELOW.) To me it seems like he's suggesting all those happy endings were fake. The first portion suggests a grim situation, while the second is melancholy and describes something pleasant. What connects the two is the line "If dreams can't come true....then why not pretend?" This, coupled with the finishing lines "the loveliest lies of all" actually suggests something quite sinister. I interpret it as this: The first part is what's 'really happening'. The narrator has found themselves in a possibly dangerous situation; for example how Wirt and Greg were drowning after having nearly been killed by a train. The person 'speaking' in this song is lost and in danger. The connecting line is basically that person saying 'okay so we're in a hopeless situation and I dont think I'm going to make it out, so why not pretend I'm safe at home until its over? (Kinda like how hypothermia causes a person to become sleepy and feel warm so they end up dying in their sleep). The second part is their 'dying thoughts' trying to comfort themselves with happy thoughts/memories because they've already lost hope of surviving/finding their way home, which is why the second part sounds so melancholy. The finishing line is basically the admission that they're lying to themselves and there is no happy ending for them. (Bear in mind that this is an interpretation purely of the lyrics and not of how they connect with the actual show). How the lyrics connect with the show is pretty straight forward to me. The first part, which is about being lost in a dangerous situation, possibly dying, also refers to the lost and 'dying' status of the brothers, and the stories of the characters they meet. The second part, if it means what I interpreted, is basically suggesting these 'happy endings' we witness in the unknown are not all that they seem, and perhaps didn't happen at all. There is also the possibility that the brothers happy ending, or perhaps even their survival, is a complete lie as well. It helps that after the 'ending' we have no way of knowing how things are in the time afterwards. Sorry for going on for so long.

I first saw this cartoon when I was around 7 on Halloween. I was too young to understand what was happening, but I remembered the calm and eerie ambience coming from the cartoon. It was…comforting in a way. It touched my soul despite I couldn’t understand the story and plot itself. I can’t wait to rewatch this series tomorrow and actually know what this amazing cartoon is about. ❤

This entire show is a beautiful work of art, but I think the soundtrack is what really evokes the sense of nostalgia I get when I watch it. It makes me feel like these are stories I've known for so long and their value is insurmountable. I've watched the series a countless number of times now and I'll probably watch it plenty more, but each time I feel like I'm learning more about life and the right way to live it, if there even is one. Anyway my original intent with this comment was to talk about the goosebumps I get whenever I hear this tune. chills every time.

Wait... THE GIANT PUMPKIN GUY WAS REALLY A CAT?! Jizzus. I wish my cat could do that.

I'm really glad that everyone got a happy ending. Except for Adelade. It's been a little while, so idk if she died or is still alive. Either way, I don't think she would be happy.

Salty+ actually the pumpkin was the beast. Because all the souls of the villagers were in the lamp.

***** the cat actually danced with the pumpkins. And I remember the pumpkin telling to Wirt that they're going to meet again soon... well, maybe not with this words, but it's the dubbing difference. And I think that IF Wirt accepted and stayed in Pottsfield (sorry for spelling it wrong if I) he wouldn't be chosen to be turned into an Edelwood (sorry here too).

***** And if you look at te villagers, you'll observe that they're actually lifeless. That means the lantern kept alive the Beast AND the villagers.

***** yeah, I forgot about the penguin-specie-named-character... I hate her so much, tough I see her for only 3 minutes and 15seconds... I just can't stand her...

This song gets the word "Unknown" more than whatever Frozen tried to do. The word unknown is a very dangerous and comforting word.

I only ever watched this short series when I was older and I was too scared at first but I grew up and saw this for what it really was and looked back and wished that I saw the beauty in this show earlier in my life

Nothing will ever come close to that feeling of watching every single episode, blissfully ignorant, only to realize towards the end, that none of the children make it out alive 🥺 This was such a good show 🫶🏻

I was so blown away by this when it first aired. When it came out on DVD I got it had had the privilege to show it to both of my brothers and my dad. Because a great thing after seeing this is getting to watch someone else see it for the first time.
