Yes, they absolutely are. They may be kept longer than you expected, but not even the Wayback Machine preserves everything.
@CWCvilleCop15 күн бұрын
@@ChrisMattern-oh6wx Exactly. We've been saying things like "the internet is forever" since the late 90s, I guess assuming that once it's up there, some form of it will exist forever somewhere. Well it definitely doesn't. Certain things have been saved on so many physical disks that they technically still exist in many places, and at best some things are archived in ways that modern machines can access them. But even those sources won't be accessible, or even survive physically, forever. The unfortunate truth is that probably ALMOST EVERYTHING saved on modern computers will not survive for longer than a century, at the very most. This has already become a problem with researchers trying to access and find ways to record older software and the data it contains for posterity. And think about it, if our same tech was used during Roman times, we'd only have the ones that somehow survived all the eons of history since and were still somehow in good enough condition to first reverse engineer, and then try to recover some of the data. And then we'd have to figure out how to read it on our own machines. In terms of a decade or two, yes most everything important on our computers can be archived and maintained for future reference, but computer data storage is one of the worst possible formats to maintain it indefinitely. It runs into the dual problem of both the hardware breaking down physically (or being destroyed) and that future tech will eventually move onto different frameworks, languages, software and hardware entirely. Cherish it while you can, and preserve what you can.

Even though I'm 16 years old, I really wish computers could still use DVDs without needing an accessory. Although I didn't live in that era, I can say it's very satisfying to see old hardware and software, and I hope to have one of those computers in a dedicated space someday. 😁
