Not sure about plenty of life left. They are 46 years old. Aside from the 313s they are the oldest stock on the network and they have led a hard life. The MTU engines themselves are 18 years old. Don't get me wrong, I love HSTs but they are genuinely old trains now.

Not like the good old days at Newport. Always a Central Trains 170 in Godfrey Road Sidings with failed brakes (From Eastfield to be taken to Tyseley who know what they are doing). And instead a 158+153 or even a 156. Eastfield once sent out a 150. The Midland Mainline people stopped it at Derby ('What a thing to send to Cardiff') and swopped passengers with the incoming 170. Fun & games back then.

Sunday a good day at Newport ebbw vale Cardiff service runs into Newport and then reverses to from Cardiff or ebbw vale usually a ex Anglia 170

The hst's look weird running as shortened sets I've never seen a shortened set before!!!

GWR & Scotrail run them like this - I think there are only a small number of XC sets left at full size now other than the Pullman.

Get out of a Hitachi 800 series and straight onto an HST, like I've done a few times, and the superior quality ride and comfort on the HST is very evident, old or not!
