The 200 Year Old Route of the Eckington Setcup Tramway, near Sheffield
In today's video we're in the small towns of Eckington and Renishaw in North East Derbyshire - a few miles south east of Sheffield.
We're here to look at the route of a tramway which ran from collieries in Eckington to the Chesterfield Canal. We see a stretch of the tramroad embankment running across Renishaw Golf Course.
The origins of the tramway are unknow. It is visble on maps from the early 1820s and we know the canal opened in 1777. We don't know the exact year that the tramway was abandoned, but I have seen written that this was around 1820.
We follow the last mile from Station Road in Eckington towards the canal where there are many old decrepid archways. All accessible via a public footpath across the Renishaw Golf Course. Sadly the last part at the canal has been reclaimed as farm land and the site of the former wharf is not permissible access land. We finish our walk today on the Brindley loops.

My channel was set up in 2020 mainly to feature my running adventures. I planned to film and showcase the days out and destinations my running travels took me. Mainly the Peak District and the sights and marvels of Sheffield and the surrounding regions.
However due to Covid restrictions, I found a new interest in researching and exploring old abandoned places - railway lines, canal, woodland, parks to name a few.
So the videos you'll find will be mainly be of those things. Of course, where possible I'll be running to my destination.

What a great find. You’ve just filmed where I spent a lot of my childhood ! I was born and bread in Eckington and I walked that route way up until my late 30’s…until I moved away. I’m in my 70’s now but still love to see anyone taking an interest. Well done!

Brilliant video, amazing what you found after 200 years, i think i saw some old rail on one of the bridges on the golf course! I think the tram loaded up with coal from the pit & took it down the Chesterfield canal for transport. Just amazing. ❤😊

That's right. I'd love a look around the site of the old canal wharf. It's private land sadly .

Remember playing in those tunnels as a child …walked many times from Southgate and over the golf course but never knew it was a line from the colliery. What location was the colliery ??? Also going along the penny engine line….from the Midland line under the road towards Eckington woods in the 1960’s

It's a really good question about the colliery Michael. I've seen numerous ones mentioned. I always hope someone with a bit more knowledge than me comes forward and fills in the blanks 🙂

@@WobblyRunner there use to be a colliery fan and pumping station along what we called the flats……it was on the straight bit of road going towards Renishaw on the Right hand side. It use to be used while Renishaw Park colliery was open.

Thanks Simon. No this part of the canal won't be restored...as spectacular section as I think it would make. This was the older section before it was diverted alongside the railway 🙂

@@michaelhibbert4393 👍🙂 I think a lot of the fascination of the Brindley Loops for me is the lost history and the bits that are still visible. One of my favourite walks.

@@WobblyRunner think how much all that dressed stonework would be to buy now……wonder if it’s protected…..perhaps Chesterfield Canal Trust could make use of it with the Sitwell estate permission.

Stunning to think that there are all those arch remains along the embankment of this long abandoned tramway. The best part about it is that the brick arches are mostly still intact, and there doesn't appear to be a keystone on any of them! The Chesterfield canal is also of interest - another long gone waterway. A great production, many thanks.
