The Old Shop and Old Racing Stories

Episode 21: Here's a little history about my dad, my older brother and 10 year old me. It's where you would find us 35 years ago, at the corner of Larry's Street Rods and Chevy Valley.

Nice, I worked for Cliff 1990-1992 - when he was machining and building JB's engines. Good story - one night we go to fire off a new engine they had picked up to get ready for the weekend, we get there after dinner and start getting everything ready, go to prime the engine... and oil is coming out of so many places - someone left out the o-rings on nearly every applicable seal on the entire dry sump system. There was oil everywhere - in the back of the car, under the car, etc. probably no more than a quart or two... however anyone who has spilled it knows, a little oil goes a long way. God I remember 311's IIRC you could run a 311 with a 4 bbl or a 331? 337? with a 2 bbl carb. I live maybe 2 miles from the river shop... over off of Lathem and Frontier, talked to you about Trans Am;s and I have old LT1 corvettes.

Wow, what a story! We've had those days too!haha... Sounds like you have some great memories, too. We (my dad) rented from JB for a while and ran at GPS in the Chargers in 90-92. That place was a playground for my brother and me. It shaped the people we bacame. If those walls could talk, strangely they do! As we got older, my brother clung to the "how and why" - became a good fabricator and mechanic. I took the "who and what" - learning the history of it all and the characters. There's so many characters, and we're all just players in a way to the big story. Making this video was a long time coming. A homecoming.

@@BuriedAmericana I have met the older red headed guy and the guy in the black sweatshirt SOMEWHERE, maybe at the shop across 123 from Stegalls or Childress's shop in Dacusville? My dad (Alan) builds flathead engines and messes with old Ford V8's over in Dacusville, he drives a Red 41 Ford Stakebed Truck and 40 Ford Woody Wagon - both with stroked Mercury Flatheads. He and Chili - (Childress) are good friends.

The older gentleman is John Cordell, so glad he came by. He's full of good stories. Sam is keeping the place organized and kept up. The guy in the black sweatshirt is Jeremy Hopkins. He worked at Laughlin's shop in Fountain Inn back in the day and spent a few years with Hooters Pro Cup and Don Satterfield.
