What fun. First chicks! I incubated hundreds of duck and goose eggs. Sometimes I let a goose sit on a clutch of eggs. But they don't see all that well and can accidently step on their goslings. But the whole tribe of adult geese will protect and raise those babies!

Marking the eggs is so clever! I might not have thought of that on my own when I get my own flock together! Thank you for the tip! So clever ^_^

Marking the eggs is the way to go, but I like to draw a line around the egg so that I can easily tell which ones belong in the nest without having to inspect each egg.

A setting hen will screech like that to bring attention to herself to pretend she's running from danger. It's her way to protect her eggs/brood. A mother's love .

Yay! Am so glad you are raising your own birds! I did this for years and it was wonderful though we took a lot of grief from “experts” from the feed store. We managed hens closely and had great success. Then we traded out roosters of new lines to keep the traits we liked. Now my adult children can do the same thing. Lovely. 🐥🐥🐥🐥!

When i was a kid my folks sold eggs. A few hundred layers. All free range. A few roosters mixed in. I would find the clucks (broody hens) and set them on eggs someplace with a bushel basket over them for one day. When i removed the basket they always adopted that nest as their own. Three weeks later she was running around the yard with her chicks.

I built a brooder box with in the coop. I believe it’s a better option. Advantage is A- no other hen can use her nesting box. B-the hen and her chick are safe from other birds. C- the hen is familiar with the nesting box. D-once the chicks hatch, it could act as a brooder and be acclimated to the existing flock.

Aww, how sweet! We had a blue cochin, named Flora, that was a retired show bird that was given to me. She thought she was a house chicken. One Easter she climbed into a basket I had filled with ceramic eggs. After that we gave her eggs to sit for us but one day we couldn't find any of our chicks. When we checked Flora, she had 22 chicks under her wings! She was the best chicken!

I put a mark all the way around the eggs when I noticed the hen sitting on them. This way, I can see at a quick glance if there are any new eggs. So far, no. And I'm excited that I have 2 broody hens sitting in side by side boxes. Each on 8 eggs.
@ann21556 жыл бұрын
I have 2 cochin hens and i put them in a extra large dog cage both at the same time if broody at the same time. So that they are in the cope with the others but the other chickens can't get into the nest that they are on. Works out great. I will do this again this year if need be. I don't separate them at anytime so that the chicks are familiar to all the rest of the group. I have never had any issue with the flock hurting the chicks. So much fun to watch little one grow. FYI if a chick is born and falls out of the nest the momma will no longer set on the eggs. Lesson learned the hard way.

I had the same problem with broody hens. I had to build a 2'x2'x8' isolation cage at then end of my chicken coup so the broody hens were left alone to sit on a specific number of eggs. The cage is about 5' off the floor above my nesting boxes. All the chickens are under the same roof and protected from the weather. About two weeks after the eggs hatch, I let the hen and her chicks join the adult birds. The hen is very protective of her chicks and the adult birds have not been a problem. I don't think I've ever had a 100% hatch. It's great when you have broody hens. I've used incubators, but always worry about power outages, and maintaining the temperature and humidity.
@NS-pf2zc6 жыл бұрын
Aw! How fun! We had a broody Rhode Island Red (she has just started laying too!), but didn't want to deal with the hassle yet, so we kept taking her eggs until she gave up. Now that it's getting towards spring, the next broody girl can hatch out. Cracked me up how the chickens are with y'all!

I moved my Orpington broody mumma (along with her cat carry box nest) to her own broody run within the Main chicken run. She was getting picked in and being pulled off of her nest by my other hens. She hatched both eggs she was sitting on perfectly now she’s raising her chicks in full view of the rest of the flock. Doing this will minimise fights and pecking when it’s time to integrate the babies and mummy in a few weeks.
@candicechristensen17536 жыл бұрын
