Astounding! People who lived in the early Victorian period, some who were born before the battle of Waterloo in 1815….just astounding! 😲😊

All these blow me away. I can't even imagine someone sitting still through 65 seconds of waiting for the photo to be taken and having it turn out like it did for Dorothy Catherine Draper. She's stunning! But they all are in their own ways :)

Several months prior to the Dorothy Catherine Draper picture, a portrait took between 10 and 20 minutes in bright sunlight.

@@Pro-Deo Only at the very beginning, before any studios opened and when everyone was still figuring the process out. Early color photos in the late 19th century also had long exposures. Filters were placed over the lens and multiple pictures had to be taken. For example Edward Bierstadt claimed to have been able to take color portraits in about 5 to 10 minutes in the early 1890s. The picture linked below was made by Bierstadt around 1895, when exposure times for his portraits were still said to be 7 minutes. If you zoom in, you will see the sitter barely moved during the exposures. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/5e/Original_Colour_Photo_of_Albert_Bierstadt%2C_c._1895.png/1024px-Original_Colour_Photo_of_Albert_Bierstadt%2C_c._1895.png In the late 1890s the Kromogram process required a minute of exposure time for bright landscapes. Even in the early 20th century most color pictures required several seconds to take, such as the Autochrome.

@@arago8649 oK I clicked the pic and even zoomed in I couldn't see where the sitter ever barely moved for that amount of time. I find that astonishing. You really know your stuff here. I'm impressed! You'd be a good university instructor. I really enjoy your channel. There's just something about viewing really old photos of people no matter who they were so intriguing. Like I want to talk with them and get to know them. Thanks so much for it and you sharing your knowledge, it rocks!

@@Pro-Deo Thank you very much for your kind words! I'm not sure though how many universities teach the history of photography. As for that photo, its hardly noticeable that the sitter (forgot to mention, it was the famous painter Albert Bierstadt) moved. Red/yellow edges are barely noticeable around the handkerchief and the right side of his face. I doubt anyone would notice it viewing the print in person though. This channel has some videos of people recounting life in the 1800s: www.youtube.com/@Lifeinthe1800s/videos There's much more interesting photos/films/sound recordings about this era on the internet, and surely more outside of it or which has been lost. A lot of it still waiting to be discovered/publicized.

He was born in 1786, the oldest verified birthdate photographed was in 1745, but he may be one of the most photographed people born in that time.

A86, These Photographs are Remarkably as Victorian The Gold Standard For Proper Photography. What goes on today goes from Absurd to Ridiculous with People In The 21Century/Twisted 🥨 Twenties.I am even for bringing back The Victorian Bonnet Hats For Women Sad 😭😭 but True especially for Celebrities and Politicians it would be a Vast Improvement. Style Has Become Stupid 😝😐 Again Early Photographs Are Superb and are Captivating For A New Art Form. RCJLEO 🦁♌
