The Oldest Pub in Britain

Preview clip: In February 2022, the oldest pub in Britain went into administration. Open since 793 AD, Ye Olde Fighting Cocks in St Alban's, Hertfordshire, has lived through more than 1,200 years of history, but during the Covid-19 pandemic, it struggled with lack of business and was forced to close. We meet the landlord Christo Tofalli to learn about the pub's history and its value in the community.

Ye Olde Fighting Cocks has lived through more than 1,200 years of history, but during the Covid-19 pandemic, it struggled with lack of business and was forced to close. ‘There’s the hope that something will turn around and there’ll be some kind of miracle’, says Richard Watson, the local vicar. ‘I had to phone the brewery, to tell that it was over. That was a toughie’, says landlord Christo Tofalli.

The do-gooders in politics spoilt the British pub by banning smoking in them. So many went out of business as a result of that stupid law; and the ones that didn't were turned into glorified kindergartens. Personally, I think it has led to a lot of loneliness in the UK, too. BTW, I write this as an ex-smoker; so I have no skin in the game.

@@xelakram Of course you do, it isn't self-evident, it has to be verified, proven. Why would pubs go out of business from banning smoke? Makes no sense. Pub culture runs deeper than smoking cigarettes.

@@BillHicks420 Of course it is self-evident! What planet do you live on? Alcoholic drinks go together with the smoking of cigarettes just like matches go together with them. Who needs a match when one hasn't a cigarette? And, as a smoker, who wants a drink without a cigarette? Drinking alcohol and smoking go together, for smokers, like pyjamas and sleeping. Furthermore, you don't have to take my word for it. At the time of the ban, there was a lot of reporting in this very fact: the fact that many pubs went out of business because of the ban.

All my mates and I stopped going to the pub when they introduced the ban. We would rather hang out in my garage.
