All depends on pace and rest. 16x400 can be as easy or as hard as you want. But if it does not feel hard it probably haven't done anything worthwhile to you.

Allie I feel you. I used to be the fastest girl on my XC/track team and in my freshman year of high school I broke two school distance records. After a lengthy injury, I’ve been struggling to run nowhere NEAR as fast as I was. Two miles feels hard at this point. Keep going, Allie, your splits are all my 400 pr 😂

I'm currently returning to training post eating disorder treatment, in a body that isn't my smallest anymore. something I've held onto is a quote from Kara Goucher "No it won't be the way it was. But it can still be pretty damn amazing. Don't let the fear of not being who you used to be stop you from living now." Loosing fitness is hard. I haven't hit my pr's from before recovery yet, but the fact that you were able to shows that it's possible (but also running is more than pr's!!) Again, the messages you spread are so important!

i love how spence knew from the very start it was going to be tough and didn't wait to start supporting you only when it got hard but throughout the whole thing, and you are a trooper for getting through ik the feeling of being frustrated in a workout its actually the worstttt also doing a double and lift after that is just... wowowow, love helicopter george and we need a george time for touchin the wall running upstairs touching the wall and running downstairs again, also listened to the pod and it was great, actually years in the making tbhhh

For anybody who wonders 72s for 400 is 15:00 5k pace and 70s for 400 is 14:35 5k pace. Add to it altitude and you get pretty brutal workout.

thanks for calculating that for me. I was like "uhh, my coach said when I do 40 sec in the 200m I'm doing 3:20 min/km, she's doing double of that, and she's taking less than 80 seconds, so hmm no idea how fast she is, but she's fast" now I know she is going 3.00 min/km, and I'll never be that fast

Sorry, I'm trying to understand. That means that if she ran 72s for 400 and was going to 5K, she'd do 5K in 15 minutes? And same with 70s for 400 but would complete 5K in 14:35? Am I understanding correctly? I never really understand what people mean when they say, "5K pace" and things like that.

@@genericusernamehere01 I think you understand it right. "5k pace" means the fastest you can run at the distance of 5k. People run at very different speeds so it does not make sense to communicate intensity of the exercise by giving an absolute pace like 5:00/km. For some people this is super easy pace, for some people this might feel like sprinting. Instead when I ask two people to run 400m at their 5k pace, they will run at different absolute paces but roughly similar intensities. For both of these people they will be running at a bit challenging pace but one that they can maintain for about 5km so they should be fine doing it for 400m.

It is one thing to crush it almost every workout, and then run a PR.....oh yeah....you did that, except I think two PR's, with one in the Olympic finals..Holy moly! Then you were able to take a really nice and relaxed break by....packing up everything you own, and driving across the western United States in your relocation to Boulder, while being very kind not to lock Spencer in the moving van as my ex wife did to me (I still say that wasn't PMS, but temporary imprisonment without basis!). Then you had a whole bunch of incredibly hard workouts, and you rocked that awesomely! However, every now and then, life says "Running needs to chill just a little bit". Even young people have some periods where the body and mind need a break, a little recovery period, and then gradually get back into it. Meaning, not lets just instantly return to setting PR's. Of course we want to immediately pick things up where they were at the highest levels of performance. But, running is a funny thing. It's not like playing the piano or violin which I do. I could not play either instrument for 2 weeks, and give me a day and I am right on track and working on getting better from where I was. Running....oh good Lord it doesn't go that way. Your video reminded me of the week after a marathon. I always thought... "gosh, I did all of these double digit runs for 3 months, and I should be faster because I have built such a great base." Nope, not for me. I am slower and it hurts to try to run at the pacing I had previously done on the track. Albeit, if I was born in Kenya or Ethiopia a marathon is just a weekly long run, and of course at a minimal 8000 feet of elevation! Sometimes we can feel pretty well, and, the workout doesn't flow. What we had in our minds we were for sure going to accomplish is not happening. We always want to see progress, but sometimes the really good workouts aren't where you felt great, ran fast and smooth, and everything was 100% fine. No, some really good workouts that build character are exactly what you shared, for which there is frustration and in this case some tears, for which you have to be the most honest person on KZbin, and that is why nearly 70,000 subscribers love you. Not for whether you are doing 400 meter intervals in 67 seconds or 71 seconds, but just for being you. Sometimes our body is in conflict with our beliefs, that our mind tells us we should be running faster and stronger, but our body says "oh this isn't happening!" However, you showed guts again. No quit, and Spencer was great. Its good that you let it out. From my experiences (which could be completely wrong, as I am not writing a book on the thought process and emotions of women!), anytime a woman kind of breaks down and sheds some tears the guy's stomach will tighten up, we enter a mental panic mode with the first words running through our heads of "oh no", and we try to think of some magical phrase to say that will make the lady feel better. However, when you get older, you know in times of duress not to offer any layperson's psychological diagnosis, but just let the lady know you are there for her, you care for her, don't say too much, and have the correct amount of tissues on hand! I think it was really cool that you shared the emotions of a workout and even the frustrations that even the very top athletes in the entire world can have, for which you qualify for that incredibly elite group. Life isn't always one step forward, two steps forward, 100 steps forward, but every now and then we take a step or two back. But, that just makes us that much tougher than we were before. Some great workouts are the one's you gut out, and you did that. The thought I leave you with is that some days our best is absolutely brilliant (for which most of us don't do our personal best on international TV at the Olympic trials....yes I know you might have possibly been even faster, but .....damn!), and other days our best sucks, and that goes for everybody, whether Tiger Woods or any other person who ever played golf. But, when you give it your best, then as you have noted, we can accept that no matter the results, and keep getting better. Well, Allie O, in writing all of this, I have delayed my shower from my 4 mile run as long as I can! Enjoy Boulder, enjoy your running, and all kinds of other things that life has to offer. With your commitment you will continue to ascend and be better and stronger, although just like a trail, there are going to be ups and downs on that journey, but the destination will be amazing!

Sometimes workouts feeel HARD; especially when switching seasons and hitting the end of a training block. You know this better than I do. I always give myself 3 days before I make any major decisions/judgements about my fitness after having done a hard workout. I would've quit years ago if I decided to criticize my fitness after every bad workout, time trial, and honestly, easy run (because 'easy' changes). One workout, fortunately, doesn't define us. You'll get out of this slump! You've done it before, and you'll do it again. Way to go Allie!

400 got to be one of the most painful thing, expected to be pretty much a sprint the whole way, with two coasting around the turns, you can see the additional muscles from running hills, unfortunately strength works against us at 400+ races, being an old track and powerlifter, hard to find the right balance on where i want to be. nothing but love for you guys

remember that you need to acclimate, and the heat doesn’t help. it can take up to a year to fully acclimate, especially in upper intensities on the track. slow your easy pace down around 1 min/mile and focus on recovery. hope to catch you on the track!

Not every day is a step forward, just another in a series to get you to where to want to be. Having some grace with yourself is often hard, but you must look at things in the perspective of what is going on right now. You moved, you're training in a high altitude setting, and maybe a handful of others that have you at...not your best. The toughest days of training, where you're doubting yourself and you're forced to persevere are the days you need more than any others. You'll get through this.

Think of it this way, you didn’t get worse near the end. If anything you were more consistently 71. It’s hard to feel like you hit a brick, but overall n injuries s a huge victory.

I know you said you got over your track wallowing, but just in case it's still nagging at you: hitting your paces (which you did) is a success. Feeling good while doing it is just a bonus and doesn't always happen. Plus as you said, it was 90º and at altitude, which cannot be discounted.

Remember that it takes longer to recover at higher altitude and the body accumulates fatigue much faster. You put in a great deposit into the fitness bank, even if it didn’t feel good

Don’t underestimate how much more difficult running in elevation is!! Going from living at sea level to elevation is a huge change. When I run in elevation, I am huffing and puffing and going at a much slower pace😂

The mental issue with track workouts (or any precisely measured workout) is separation of these two separate things: "training to improve fitness" and "measurement of current fitness". For most sessions, the second thing is not at all the goal, but is so salient in the moment. When the news is bad on the measurement front, the real challenge is to hold the quality of the workout so that primary goal (or indeed only goal) of a good training stimulus is still achieved. Allie, with support, achieved the goal here.
