If the Ali Express brands can make a moonwatch homage with a decent metal bracelet and sapphire crystal for $120 or so, Swatch can at least do something a little better for $260.

I own one of these: a surprise gift from a friend in Switzerland. It's cool, and I was delighted when it arrived. But I understand Nick's ambivalence. What no one comments on is the packaging from the Swatch Boutique. It is amazing: intricate, clever, beautiful, an elaborate exercise in origami designed by geniuses. But this is indicative. As Jody points out at JOMW, you never get elaborate packaging from Casio. What you get is amazing value for your money.

Swatch Group is doing for watches what "designer" brands are doing for clothes. A person wishes they could buy a pair of Gucci horsebit loafers. But they will either never have $900 for a pair of shoes or will never be able to bring themselves to spend such a ridiculous amount of money for a pair of shoes. Then they see a $9 T shirt selling for $60 that says Gucci on it, and it doesn't seem so ridiculous so they bite (although for some reason when I priced the shirt for this example it was over $500??? For a T shirt??? WTF!? But I digress). Swatch is using the $7000 Speedy to make $260 for a watch that may as well have come out of a claw machine at an arcade look like a reasonable proposition. Personally, I'm actually offended that SWATCH thinks I'm dumb enough to pay them $260 for their disposable moonswatch when Casio will sell me a solar powered, radio controlled, 100 M water resistant, sapphire crystal, all steel Edifice chrono for the same money or less. But I'm not their target anyway (I like overpaying for Japanese rather than Swiss watches), and even though this makes me personally hate the moonswatch, I would not want to rain on anyone else's parade. If someone tries it on, loves it, and isn't bothered by the price, they should get it and enjoy. End of the day, it's all about what makes each person happy.
@danielgrant92139 ай бұрын
Also, if you love the Speedmaster, hate the $7000-$8000 price and don't think we should carry bugs forward in the name of history, why not get a Speedy 40mm racing? It's got an automatic movement, sapphire crystal, and 100m of water resistance costs over $2000 less than the "Professional" Speedmaster. Does the slightly different look just not do it for you?
@Tankman3339 ай бұрын

A while back (15 years now), I got a Swatch chronograph for about $100. Seemed like it was the same quality as this one, possibly better in a few areas (like the strap, availability, etc.)...But it didn't say "Omega" on it, so yeah.
@VoodooMike9 ай бұрын
I find it amusing that you think that the price of a precision built mechanical watch, with hundreds of the tiniest parts working together seamlessly in all conditions (including space) is laughable. Yet when someone puts together a "high end" knife from three pieces of similar materials, plus half a dozen screws, and charges over a grand for it, that's reasonable.
@iburley_9 ай бұрын
I think the price seems more shocking than it is only because the Moonswatch release was big enough to get the attention of non-Swatch people. Their normal plastic chronographs that don't look like a Speedmaster are already $130-160. That's still a far cry from $260, but it's not an astronomical jump. It was also the first Swatch to use regular spring bars and be able to take any third party strap. I don't live near a Swatch boutique so I don't own one yet, but I absolutely still on plan on getting a Mission to Mars. Your only other options to get an Alaska Project design is either tens of thousands of dollars for a used Omega or a Pagani Design "homage", which frankly I just couldn't wear and feel good about.
@CKshouta9 ай бұрын
good point on finally being able to use normal straps. Swatch factory silicone straps are not good to begin with, having the option to use better straps is an improvement. That said, I don't know if the bioceramic case is stronger than regular swatch plastic, I would hate to see it fail at the hole like their plastic ones tend to do.

Re the water resistance: I started wearing swatch in the mid to late 80s and I've owned quite a few ... almost all of whom I treated as if they were 200 or 300m divers, because it said "30 m" on the case-back and I didn't know better. I've worn them doing things like water-skiing or snorkeling in the ocean. Weirdly enough, none of them ever suffered any sort of water damage - not even the swatch chronograph I used to own. Does that mean you should treat them like a dive-watch? Absolutely not... I'm just sayin' that - in my experience - these things aren't necessarily as fragile as one might think. :) Re the quality of the MoonSwatch: I haven't handled one myself, but what I've seen in videos looks pretty ... poor. As stated, I did own a swatch chronograph and it felt very well put together. It was also of their "irony"-line, so the case and pushers were made of steel. So swatch do know how to make these things in a more solid way - and for a lower price. They still have irony-chronos in their line-up and those cost quite bit less than the MoonSwatch, even when they come on a metal bracelet. I'm not a tin-foil-hat aficionado, but I guess a Moonswatch with a steel-case and bracelet would *probably* have been too close to the real thing for the swatch group's taste.

These watches arent meant for classic watch collectors. They're Swatch capitalizing on the same thing that happened with sneakers like Jordans. Some people are completionist collectors who go for all the variants. Swatch watches are fun. My first watch my parents got me was an Olympics 2004 Athens themed Swatch and i loved it. It was 50€ and they didnt have to worry about it getting damaged. Now the price on the moonswatch is probably about 100 too high but its still a fun way to explore different moon watch designs without it being exorbitantly priced. And they make fun gifts for people who arent really into watches but want something that looks neat.
@robojimtv9 ай бұрын
Oh and the loudness on this is so much less than the basic Swatches lol
@PhantomObserver9 ай бұрын
I’d have to say the MoonSwatch is aimed specifically at people who have good memories of NASA and space exploration. The strap is meant to evoke memories of the hook-loop strap astronauts used to wear Speedies while in orbit or doing EVAs. As for the price, it probably would be better to compare this price to other Swatch chronographs than Casios or Citizens. Despite its reputation, Swatch really isn’t a value proposition brand. It sells fashion design watches not meant as primary use products.
@CKshouta9 ай бұрын
Swatch can be primary use, if you work around its nuances such as not getting anywhere close to alcohol (because of acrylic crystal ) and have polywatch paste to undo the occasional scratches. Too bad I work at a hospital where alcohol sanitizers use are very frequent.
@ProjectSerpo909 ай бұрын
I can’t believe people went crazy for these. They remind me of the Armitron Looney Tunes watch i wore when i was like 6 as a kid growing up in the 1990s. It was a cheap watch with horrible plastic straps yet had an actual metal case. The only difference is those watches cost about $20, not $200+ because it says Omega on it. If you have $200 buy yourself a Seiko or if you want plastic get a G-Shock, it will last you forever and will be worth every penny.

I heard about these the night before they dropped on a livestream and was initially very intigued. That is untill i saw the horribly cheap build quality. Im no watch snob, I own a few cheap plastic Casios, but they were all well under $50. At least give us a well finshed stainless steel case and a decent strap if your going to charge over $200 for a quartz watch. Personally, I cant see why anyone would pay $260 (or even more on the ridiculously over inflated secondary market) when you can get a really well done Chinese homage to the Speedmaster for under $100. I bought the Pagani Design PD1701 for $64 . It has a sapphire bezel and domed crystal. Seiko mecha-quartz movement, a decent (but not spectacular) stainless steel bracelet and really nice fit and finish on the case. If homage watches aren't your thing, I'd much rather spend the extra $100 and get the Bulova Lunar Pilot. Unlike the Moonswatch, it has an actual moon heritage, and bragging rights as to how it saved the day when an astronaut's Omega failed.

If it doesn’t say Omega, it is not a counterfeit. It’s not a fake. It’s not tacky buying a Pagani Design. It’s smart. Charging $8,000 is an abomination. There is nothing about the materials and the manufacturing that justifies the price. Heck, if you want to spend $8,000 just to have a “real” Omega, go for it. But I’m happy being “tacky” with a real Pagani Design. I’m not pretending that it is an Omega. I’m proudly wearing a Pagani Design.

“This is not a homepage” Yes, yes it is. It is just a poor homage made by a brand that has nothing in common with Omega except they are owned by the same huge corporation. Frankly if you love the Moonwatch, you’re better off buying one of the higher end homages, some of them cost as much as this toy and they are superb quality. There’s absolutely zero cool factor difference between that and a Swatch made homage. Both are homages made by different companies. Swatch is not Omega
