In my opinion this launch does not support the brand perception that Omega has built so far. Nothing in the watches connects to exclusivity, high quality, and tradition. Absolutely genius. The conversation has been nonstop. And while Rolex is making themselves less accessible and more expensive than other, this is particularly smart. A big middle finger to Rolex and their artificial scarcity and overblown marketing.

Two big middle fingers to Rolex. If I was given a Submariner, I would absolutely love it, but it is something I would never buy due to their games and having to pay a ridiculous price on the secondary market. Can't wait to get a MoonSwatch and the day I can afford an actual Speedy.
@richardbartlett69322 жыл бұрын
Firstly there isn't any artificial scarcity. Rolex sell pretty much everything they can possibly produce. Its the overblown demand c/w too many dealers chasing the same watches. AD's need to make money, they can only sell the Rolexes which are supplied to them. If they need 100 (for demand and overheads) and Rolex only provide 10 then they need to get 10x per watch to pay the bills (they can't satisfy demand) . Hence selling out the back door and/or encouraging buyers to buy other less desirable non Rolex watches. However re Omega/swatch, Rolex are now offering their own cheaper 'me too' versions of Rolex : Tudor are fast becoming an homage brand which is meant to satisfy those who can't afford a grey market Rolex but want the look of a Rolex..

The AppleWatch is great as well as most smart watches for that matter but the mechanical and quartz watches although now obsolete are also great. I think this Omega-Swatch has allowed the traditional watch makers to rethink what they n their timepieces stood for... Did they think FOR the consumer - like Apple; or Should they have been thinking OF the consumer - who, whichever group they belong to, gives them the money that they have been earning all along. Earning, yes... Not Making. Call it a fun-piece, a rip-off, a pre-emptive marketing strike before the watch fair or what you will... The Fact remains that this is a watch for the masses, who may or may not be aware of the intricacies n complexity of watch making n its history... But their Focus is Not Incorrect - that a watch, no matter the price, served only one purpose - telling ONLY THE TIME. It's a long overdued wake-up call to Both the watch industry n several others, Apple included... That if you DON'T THINK of your customers nor Respect them despite the group they are in... I purchased my first "luxury" watch this year from Omega. Went with the Seamaster Diver 300m, white dial. I was between the Seamaster and Speedmaster, and ultimately decided that I'll go with the Seamaster now, and Speedy next year if all goes well. When this collaboration came out I was thrilled. I'll never pay over retail, but I absolutely plan on trying to get one of these when they're more widely available from Swatch. Do I still plan on getting the "real" Speedy if I can get my hands on the Moonswatch? Yep! If I can get a "variant" of that same watch that's still backed by the Omega brand, for under $300 that I can beat the hell out of (and maybe even in a fun color), what's not to love? Couple that with getting more (younger) people introduced to the luxury watch game, I think Omega nailed it with this.

Yeah but here is the thing. Would you buy a luxury edition, 2grand worth of Casio as your main watch, only because 20-30 years ago you had a 30dollar Casio? Most people really won't.. right? Today, as an adult you rather associate Casio with a "cheap", lower division, as some sort of a reminiscence. My point being here is, that I see no correlation between first/cheap Omega and future luxury Omega purchases from the same person. I actually think it'll be quite the opposite. Speedmaster Moonwatch owner here and I would love get the red moonSwatch. It is a fun watch that celebrates one of the most iconic watch. Big hype and massive brand awareness for Omega, something I felt Omega needed. I'm part of the newer generation and the non-watch enthusiasts (such as my friends) don't even know what Omega is let alone a Speedmaster before this release. Those saying it will ruin the image may have forgotten what the watch collecting hobby is all about.. I think this is a brave move from Omega that shows that they are confident in their watches and their heritage. Also, this hype has even gotten the missus (who does not own a watch) interested and asking when she can get the venus version (pink one?). Just wished I could get my hands on one. ;D

I think that the Moonswatch should have been branded as a Swatch product with only an Omega symbol underneath the Swatch brand however I think that the product is a great collaboration in that most Swiss watch brands come off a bit snooty whereas Omega as a high end brand has always relied on its reputation as being a brand that produces watches that are supremely engineered In cases that are very well finished. In the Moonswatch we have a product that is well engineered in a case that is affordable and attractive in its marketplace and attracts people who haven’t been in the hobby before to the hobby. It’s a win for new customers to the Swatch brand and future customers for Omega. Brilliant marketing indeed.

I own an Omega Globemaster, and I am excited about this collaboration. I feel it injects a much needed sense of inclusivity and youthfulness into a watch world that can often feel snobbish and elitist. I’m not really concerned about how it affects the exclusivity of owning an Omega, because that’s not why I chose the Globemaster, and I’m not going to like my Globemaster any less just because there will be a lot of people walking around with a MoonSwatch. If anything, I am happy that there will be more people walking around with watches with Omega branding, because I like that there will be more people excited about a brand I’m excited about. I see some people on social media criticizing it, and a lot of times it comes across as insecurity, as a way to exert some sense of superiority they get from owning an expensive luxury watch, and feeling like that’s being challenged. I think this is a great move and I fully support it.

I owned 2 speedmasters (and sold one) but i'm still going to get the moonswatch. 1. I dont think this move damages the brand in any way but instead it made me a prouder owner of a speedmaster. Before the moonswatch, most non-watch people dont even know the existence of the legendary moonwatch but now because of the moonswatch, people now recognise them. They didn't know what i was wearing until they see the moonswatch and now they have an idea when they see a speedmaster on someone's wrist. They will know it's the expensive version when they see it stainless steel, which is instantly recognisable from bioceramic. 2. THE COLORS!!!! These colorways are fire on speedmasters and it would be impossible to see speedmaster in these colorways if it wasn't for this collab.

I'm getting the Mercury as soon as I'm able to order online, it's very similar to the original Moonwatch but it just has a little extra with the light grey accents which I love as it's nicely layered, my second favourites are the Saturn and Jupiter as I love earthy colour tones and the fact that the bottom subdial on Saturn actually has the planet itself. These are a great idea, it definitely doesn't come close to imitating the quality of an actual mechanical Speedmaster Professional, it's just for fun and it 100% worked in Swatch & Omega's favour :)

Not sure if its the same where you are but in scotland you can get a speedmaster on monthly for the same price you would pay for a new iphone on contract. 1 of those will last you a few years the other a lifetime..... worth considering :-)

@@chrisdnz82 hey! Good to know there are great offers like that in the UK/Scotland. In Malaysia we have to max out our credit card or pay cash. As after conversion+taxes, the price goes over the roof. Having said that, these kinds of watches are like once in a lifetime purchases for the bulk majority of us Asians.

I bought a speedy last year and will be selling it as soon as I find something I like. To take an icon like the moonwatch and turn out crappy plastic copies has killed it for me

Well said, I agree on the idea of introducing the brand to younger aficionado....later would save for the higher unit. Or introduction to the brand.

I got one and loved it, though the glass was of poorer quality than I expected. As a marketing exercise, it's genius. It reminds me of the car world. In the 1960s, Ford made the Cortina a popular but mundane family saloon car. They commissioned Lotus to build 1000 high-performance units to homologate the car for racing in Touring Car championships, where it performed very well in the hands of superstars like Jim Clark and Jackie Stewart. Suddenly, a mere Ford was pictured on every racing and car magazine cover, its rear end sliding out at 120 mph. The halo effect was enormous. This will do a whole lot of good for Omega and Swatch, unquestionably.

I have a collection of watches ranging from luxury swiss to iconic seikos. Never really considered Omega as it never seems to stand out. Was contemplating getting the Omega-Swatch but having second thoughts after seeing the poor build quality (even considering it is a Swatch). My perception of Omega has deteriorated post this Omega-Swatch launch.

I have a Speedmaster and I don't mind the collaboration. The Moonswatch is a toy compared to the real one. It's a good marketing move. What Rolex does for marketing is far more upsetting. It also serves as a good feedback gauge for Omega. With those long queues they now know how desirable the real Speedmaster is.

I own a Seamaster Professional Diver Chronograph and a Planet Ocean Chronograph. I will be buying the Mission to Mercury when they become available. I hadn't considered a Speedmaster in the past but this might be my next Omega purchase. My interest in watches had waned over the past few years but this Moonswatch has piqued my interest in watches again.

I have been thinking for many years about owning a second OMEGA watch to wear when I am not wearing my SpeedMaster MoonWatch (sapphire). So far, I have found none and my moonwatch continues being my daily watch to wear. However, I agree the move of the Swatch/Moonwatch was very surprising to me. I can see many people having a taste and later on desiring to own the real MoonWatch.

I own the new Speedmaster Professional Moon Watch 3861 Coaxial. I bought it in 2021 when it was first released, it has since had by far the most wrist time of all my luxury watches. I love that they came up with these cotton candy toy editions, it does allow a new group of people to get into a Speedmaster and work hard to one day own one. The build quality is worlds apart, I'm not discouraged to buy my 3rd Speedmaster at all, in fact the Speedy Chronoscopes look amazing.

Stood in line for hours, in rain, crazy early in the morning. when it got into pushing and line cutting, and the thousands of people for what was likely only 100 or so watches... hit me that I was lining up for a plastic quartz, so walked away after only a couple of hours, missing the actual sale. Now I'm so glad I missed it, it's a throw away watch that adds to the landfills. I want an Omega less than I wanted before, definitely hollows out the value for me. The yahoos fighting each other to buy it and the fact it's a such a throw away watch have sullied it for me. I am happily 'revenge buying' some other non Omega watches. For reference, I've got watches from both swatch and real speedy price ranges.

I still believe that the "Casioak" was the driver behind this, especially with the aftermarket kits you can buy to make it look like a Royal Oak. Casio has sold tons. I'm sure people have discovered what the Royal Oak is, also, but like 99% of the population, an RO is out of the question. All of this happening unintentionally. The Swatch Group saw this and found a way to make an official crossover and keep the money in house. Many will be happy just to be able to wear an "official" Omega watch and only pay 5% of the asking price. And, like you said, many will want a real SMP. Those who are offended by the MoonSwatch...hahaha 🤣😂😆😂... We need to see an official Casioak....I definitely would buy a Casio with AP printed on the dial. Swatch should announce the discontinuation of the Pluto watch, citing the fact that Pluto is no longer a planet. This should drive prices crazy and hopefully drive Rolex owners crazy.

Heh, I hope they don't discontinue Pluto, I love that colourway

AP is not as dumb as Omega and are unlikely to cheapen their brand the way Omega has. It's one thing for a 3rd party like Casio to do an affordable homage to an iconic AP watch, but another for Swatchgroup to cannibalize the prestige of one of its own brands for a cheap Swatch product. And neither Rolex or Rolex owners care about the tacky marketing exercises from Omega. Rolex runs an extremely disciplined marketing strategy that has increased the prestige of the brand over time.

@@goldencalf5144 I'm sure the Swatch Group fully intended to shake up the stodgy management and customer base. Omega did not develop the Moon Watch for sockless, short pant suit wearers... The watch collecting community is a giant mutual admiration society that has an over inflated sense of self importance. It's not really viewed well from the outside. The feigned shock and disappointment of the MoonSwatch highlights this point. I'm sure there are plenty of individuals that wore Omegas and Rolexes in the line of duty and put their lives on the line who are disgusted by the thought of a watch boutique. Too bad I'm hours away from a Swatch store or else I'd be flaunting a MoonSwatch because apparently it offends some people.

I don’t get the “Casioak” nonsense. That watch looks almost NOTHING like a Royal Oak. Octagonal bezel, nothing else. Not even any fake screws. Standard G-Shock band, G-Shock case. Looks as much like a Tag Aquaracer as it does a Royal Oak. People are dumb.

@@mach78fl370 you're smart.... Have you seen the kits that you can put the modules in? Obviously not....

For me it destroyed the idea of buying a Speed Master. The Moonswatch feels to me as Collab of Primark and LV.

Same. I've been souring on Omega recently, but then this happened and it made me head in a different direction. Right now, my collection is all Tudor, Breitling, and Seiko. The moonwatch hype motivated me to seriously consider finally buying a Navitimer.

My late mother asked me before leaving for a trip to Europe in 1969 what I would like her to bring back for me. I immediately said the Omega Speedmaster. She literally bought it in Zurich the day we landed on the moon. I retired it from daily use around 1980 when I was issued a Rolex Sea Dweller serving in the military. Now I wear it every year for the month of July in my mother's memory. This release of the Swatch will kindle an inferno of interest and desire in all the original Speedmasters for the younger generations. Brilliant.
