In my opinion this launch does not support the brand perception that Omega has built so far. Nothing in the watches connects to exclusivity, high quality, and tradition. I like the new models and they will sell like crazy, but I don’t think that in the long term they will improve the way users perceive Omega.

Absolutely genius. The conversation has been nonstop. And while Rolex is making themselves less accessible and more expensive than other, this is particularly smart. A big middle finger to Rolex and their artificial scarcity and overblown marketing.

Two big middle fingers to Rolex. If I was given a Submariner, I would absolutely love it, but it is something I would never buy due to their games and having to pay a ridiculous price on the secondary market. Can't wait to get a MoonSwatch and the day I can afford an actual Speedy.
@richardbartlett6932
@richardbartlett6932 2 жыл бұрын
Firstly there isn't any artificial scarcity. Rolex sell pretty much everything they can possibly produce. Its the overblown demand c/w too many dealers chasing the same watches. AD's need to make money, they can only sell the Rolexes which are supplied to them. If they need 100 (for demand and overheads) and Rolex only provide 10 then they need to get 10x per watch to pay the bills (they can't satisfy demand) . Hence selling out the back door and/or encouraging buyers to buy other less desirable non Rolex watches. However re Omega/swatch, Rolex are now offering their own cheaper 'me too' versions of Rolex : Tudor are fast becoming an homage brand which is meant to satisfy those who can't afford a grey market Rolex but want the look of a Rolex..

I agree. I purchased my Rolex before they started playing games with availability. I would add an other to my collection if they didn't make you beg for it. Instead I have come to appreciate other brands and have made purchases. So thank you Rolex for opening my eyes. Word on the street in the industry is that AD's have inventory and help create the scarcity

I’m now 57 & received an Omega Seamaster Quartz for my 21st birthday in 1985. Never serviced & still keeps time like a dream. I love watches & love your channel. I think the idea of Omega & Swatch collaborating over an iconic watch like the Speedmaster was a touch of genius. It puts the fun back into owning an accessory like a watch. In this day and age of people buying apple & smart watches,which will be outdated within a few years,this will give young buyers something fun to buy that will stay relevant for years. Possibly start a habit of investing in quality timepieces,no matter what brand they look at. Never seen hysteria over a watch like this before. Thanks,Paul.

As soon as I started wearing my Samsung Frontier S3 with the ability to download all my favorite luxury brand dials (as long as they were round) but with ability to take phone calls, full exercise metrics, and even Chrome video playback of KZbin now every time I put on a regular watch it seems kind of pointless.

@@davidcrandall4958 It is not hard to believe at all. Simply it is a different proposal. The AppleWatch is great as well as most smart watches for that matter but the mechanical and quartz watches although now obsolete are also great. See, if I had to buy a car to commute to work as well as for leisure, I'd just buy a modern banger in good condition, if it could be a fun model I'd go for that but it will have to remain cheap. Would I buy a new Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, Aston-Martin ? Definitely not even though I could at a whim. But how come I would definitely not sell my pre-war racing Rileys and Bugattis nor my biplane. Are these practical ? Not at all. Are these obsolete ? Yes, definitely. So why ? Simply because of the pleasure and the romance they provide.

I think this Omega-Swatch has allowed the traditional watch makers to rethink what they n their timepieces stood for... Did they think FOR the consumer - like Apple; or Should they have been thinking OF the consumer - who, whichever group they belong to, gives them the money that they have been earning all along. Earning, yes... Not Making. Call it a fun-piece, a rip-off, a pre-emptive marketing strike before the watch fair or what you will... The Fact remains that this is a watch for the masses, who may or may not be aware of the intricacies n complexity of watch making n its history... But their Focus is Not Incorrect - that a watch, no matter the price, served only one purpose - telling ONLY THE TIME. It's a long overdued wake-up call to Both the watch industry n several others, Apple included... That if you DON'T THINK of your customers nor Respect them despite the group they are in... SOMEONE ELSE Will. It's Back to the Basics boys. 😁

Rolex now reminds me of Harley in the early 00's. They saw a huge uptick in popularity, but sat on their butts and jacked up prices without innovating and the quality of customer service at dealers dropped off turning off an entire generation of riders, and now they are the "old man" brand that no younger people want anymore. I foresee Rolex going the same direction.

I purchased my first "luxury" watch this year from Omega. Went with the Seamaster Diver 300m, white dial. I was between the Seamaster and Speedmaster, and ultimately decided that I'll go with the Seamaster now, and Speedy next year if all goes well. When this collaboration came out I was thrilled. I'll never pay over retail, but I absolutely plan on trying to get one of these when they're more widely available from Swatch. Do I still plan on getting the "real" Speedy if I can get my hands on the Moonswatch? Yep! If I can get a "variant" of that same watch that's still backed by the Omega brand, for under $300 that I can beat the hell out of (and maybe even in a fun color), what's not to love? Couple that with getting more (younger) people introduced to the luxury watch game, I think Omega nailed it with this.

Yeah but here is the thing. Would you buy a luxury edition, 2grand worth of Casio as your main watch, only because 20-30 years ago you had a 30dollar Casio? Most people really won't.. right? Today, as an adult you rather associate Casio with a "cheap", lower division, as some sort of a reminiscence. My point being here is, that I see no correlation between first/cheap Omega and future luxury Omega purchases from the same person. I actually think it'll be quite the opposite. As part of Omega's forthcoming, long-term downfall.

Definitively I'm gonna buy one of this as soon as they will be reasonable available. Not gonna become crazy, I'll be patient. Thanks for the review.

In the "10 watches you should not buy" video, a lot of commenters said they'd buy a homage since they couldn't afford the real thing. The same applies here, most of the people can't afford the Speedmaster but could have a 'replica' that is not a third party make.

Big hype and massive brand awareness for Omega, something I felt Omega needed. I'm part of the newer generation and the non-watch enthusiasts (such as my friends) don't even know what Omega is let alone a Speedmaster before this release. Those saying it will ruin the image may have forgotten what the watch collecting hobby is all about.. I think this is a brave move from Omega that shows that they are confident in their watches and their heritage. I think that the Moonswatch should have been branded as a Swatch product with only an Omega symbol underneath the Swatch brand however I think that the product is a great collaboration in that most Swiss watch brands come off a bit snooty whereas Omega as a high end brand has always relied on its reputation as being a brand that produces watches that are supremely engineered In cases that are very well finished. In the Moonswatch we have a product that is well engineered in a case that is affordable and attractive in its marketplace and attracts people who haven’t been in the hobby before to the hobby. It’s a win for new customers to the Swatch brand and future customers for Omega. Brilliant marketing indeed.

From a person that owns a luxury, mid tier and cheaper watches I actually really like this move, my first Chronograph is going to be a Speedy but this release is not only very fun but also super accessible(if we don't count the silly Selected stores only and the non-existent online preorders -_-) I'm currently saving for my sapphire sandwich Moonwatch which is a healthy £5,000+ so when these got announced i was a little skeptical but the Mission to Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn really spoke to me. I'm getting the Mercury as soon as I'm able to order online, it's very similar to the original Moonwatch but it just has a little extra with the light grey accents which I love as it's nicely layered, my second favourites are the Saturn and Jupiter as I love earthy colour tones and the fact that the bottom subdial on Saturn actually has the planet itself. These are a great idea, it definitely doesn't come close to imitating the quality of an actual mechanical Speedmaster Professional, it's just for fun and it 100% worked in Swatch & Omega's favour :)

As a collector I love this. I have 3 Seamasters, I bought the Sun and Uranus and got my mom Jupiter. I love the fact that its a easy watch to wear and it doesn't intimidate anyone. At first glance people ask how come you're wearing a watch with a velcro strap, but when you explain how its a Swatch/Omega and its theme, it creates a good conversation around them and gets people talking and interested in the watch, while if you have a normal Omega watch, the person just knows 'thats a serious watch' and nothing comes from it. Plus I like to have color in the collection, not everything can be gold and steel. I did purchase a rubber strap for one, because the velcro strap just doesn't sit well sometimes.

Before the moonswatch, most non-watch people dont even know the existence of the legendary moonwatch but now because of the moonswatch, people now recognise them. They didn't know what i was wearing until they see the moonswatch and now they have an idea when they see a speedmaster on someone's wrist. They will know it's the expensive version when they see it stainless steel, which is instantly recognisable from bioceramic. 2. THE COLORS!!!! I own an Omega Globemaster, and I am excited about this collaboration. I feel it injects a much needed sense of inclusivity and youthfulness into a watch world that can often feel snobbish and elitist. I’m not really concerned about how it affects the exclusivity of owning an Omega, because that’s not why I chose the Globemaster, and I’m not going to like my Globemaster any less just because there will be a lot of people walking around with a MoonSwatch. If anything, I am happy that there will be more people walking around with watches with Omega branding, because I like that there will be more people excited about a brand I’m excited about. I see some people on social media criticizing it, and a lot of times it comes across as insecurity, as a way to exert some sense of superiority they get from owning an expensive luxury watch, and feeling like that’s being challenged. I think this is a great move and I fully support it.

If the Moonswatch while being made of bio-plastic, turns out to be reliable and resistant to discoloration, Swatch may have stolen a march or two on the other watch brands. My interest in watches was born out of my passion for the 1960´s Space programs of the USA and the USSR. My first goal was always a "moonwatch" which were out of my price range back then (mid noughties) until I got a present for my 40th birthday in the form of an Omega Speedmaster automatic (reduced). This was my first luxury brand watch. The reduced was an attempt from Omega to widen the base of potential consumers looking for a smaller, cheaper and automatic alternative to the Moonwatch. It worked well for me, for example. What is happening here is similar but in a extrmely wide scale It is a risky bet to increase awareness of the brand but I think it is going to be succesful. If these watches become finally available I see myself buying a Mission to Mars, which to me are the most interesting. A lot of these watches will be sold if they can ramp up production before the summer months. The effect on the Omega brand will be positive ( I guess) as there is not such a thing as bad publicity. But I do not think this will dent the trend towards more Rolex sales as this has become an aspirational brand which also is a safe economic bet, given the constant increase in sales of second hand sport watches. Great video as always, you are my go to channel for all things horology.

As a budget consumer who is new to watch collecting, I think this is a very cool project and gives me a greater appreciation for the swatch group and Omega in particular. If anything, it makes me want to support their company more in the long term.

I absolutely love it. I own relatively cheap vintage seamaster and really wanted to grow my omega collection but did not have the money to buy something like a speedmaster. This gives me the opportunity to add a cool piece to my collection and grow my love for Omega watches

Inexpensive and cheap are not the same term! Just because you can still,at least for now buy a vintage seamaster inexpensively does not mean you've bought a "cheaply made watch!on the contrary,In my opinion,The. Older Omegas are much better made than the modern pieces!

I own quite a few watches including a seamaster. I think it’s a great move to raise interest in the brand and watch collecting in general, in a time that non smart watches aren’t needed.

Honestly after having had a "smart watch" (Galaxy Watch Active) and being irritated by how quickly it died, I'm starting to see real mechanical watches as nessisary again, something well engineered, far more water resistant in many cases, requiring no batteries or internet connection, and are just plainly gorgeous with their finishing even in my small 500$ or less price range, even without service a Orient "Mini Triton" will live an order or magnitude longer than any smart watch. I only keep a Garmin Instinct Solar around as a fitness tracker because it claims to be considerably more robust against shock and water than most with a far longer battery life, if it fails however it will be the last "smart" watch I bother with

@@UNSCPILOT I have a garmin fenix 6 and it’s actually great. I had it as my daily watch for the last 2 years.Only needs charging once a week. now I just use it for hiking etc.. nothing matches a nice mechanical, I just feel better wearing one. Gone back to my proper watches

I own multiple Omegas, including a Speedmaster GSOTM. I love this and plan to get at least one for myself and one for my daughter. Don’t think this will hurt the brand, but as you said, will make it more accessible for future potential Omega buyers.

I myself own two Omegas though not the Speedmaster. A lot of Omega fans think this collaboration diluted the brand, but I think it showed the whole world just what a powerful brand Omega is, despite it often being overshadowed by Rolex. It was a risky move, but it will pay off. I bet even people who weren't much interested in Omega before are looking at it now. And I bet a lot of Omega owners are finding a fresh appreciation for the brand that is often described as the "underdog" in comparison with Rolex.

Brilliant marketing. I’d thought about adding a Speedmaster to my collection . When I couldn’t buy a Moonswatch I took the plunge and bought a co - axial on a nylon strap. Beautiful.

Just bought a new Speedy, the real one. Planned it before this release though and love it. It came as an extra buy for a Sub which made it a perfect combo deal! I am definitely gonna get one (or more) of these Swatches, its just fun and very good for casual usages or vacations to, lets call them not so safe, countries :D I don't mind this colab and I don't think it will hurt Omega at all. They were anyway lacking behind already, this might even bring the opposite as you pointed out perfectly!

Omega and Swatch were smart enough to understand that the future of brand success is not on competition and exclusivity but on collaboration and inclusivity. This is a concept imported from some players in the tech, entertainment and fashion industries. As someone who works with design, business innovation and marketing this is genius.

Genius idea imho. Seamaster owner, really think it's great for the brand, can't see any negatives. Great that it upsets the watch snobs too 😅 Underlines they're the antithesis of Rolex, all about fun & cool youthfulness rather than boring, staid investment brand. Good video, Cheers mate 👍🏻👍🏻

I like that video and argumentation. I am since many years into luxury watches - and around 15 years ago I owned a speedmaster broad arrow. Since then I lost interest into Omega speedmaster and bought other brands. But this recent Omega-Swatch hype draw on my attention back to it - ending up in the decision to buy both watches. The traditional Speedmaster and a fun piece from Swatch. All in all for me it is a very clever market approach - beneficial for both of them 👍🏼

I got one and loved it, though the glass was of poorer quality than I expected. As a marketing exercise, it's genius. It reminds me of the car world. In the 1960s, Ford made the Cortina a popular but mundane family saloon car. They commissioned Lotus to build 1000 high-performance units to homologate the car for racing in Touring Car championships, where it performed very well in the hands of superstars like Jim Clark and Jackie Stewart. Suddenly, a mere Ford was pictured on every racing and car magazine cover, its rear end sliding out at 120 mph. The halo effect was enormous. This will do a whole lot of good for Omega and Swatch, unquestionably.

Previous tudor owner here. I owned mine for 18 months but the silliness involving market manipulation from the wilsdorf group has tainted the brand for me. It's perhaps a sign of the times that I sold the watch for the amount I paid (slight discount during COVID). I'm replacing it with a 1969 OMEGA geneve dynamic & buying a moonswatch with the spare change. I think it's a masterstroke & brings fun back into the equation of luxury watch accessibility & ownership.

Jean Claude Biver said in interviews (I think even with an interview with you, Teddy) that brands like Daniel Wellington or Apple should be respected more since they serve as a gateway for the aspiration to own mechanical watches. I think what Swatch x Omega did was they went ahead and put themselves in that position and took some control in that position. Which is good since being in someone's watch journey from the start would direct these people at the gate to their brand. Rolex can't depend on Daniel Wellington on making someone aspire to have a Rolex in particular. It might be possible, but it could go to a variety of ways. What the Moonswatch did was it is the gateway for people to aspire for the Moonwatch in particular. They control the aspirational narrative now instead of depending on the fashion brands to hopefully convert people to their brand.
