Definitely considered a classic for a reason! BTS trivia regarding the final shot: when Damian turns to the camera, he was meant to just hold a threatening look. The director off camera was telling him as they were filming, "Don't smile. Don't you smile." and the kid broke out into that appallingly sweet (in the context of the scene) grin. And it became... iconic! Oh, and the music was the only horror score to ever win an Oscar. The same composer (Jerry Goldsmith) also composed the scores for II & III, and the three together comprise a sort of dark symphony. The music and sound design in this year's prequel was exceptional as well (composed by Mark Korven)!

Fun fact: that hospital elevator is called a Paternoster lift, also cyclic chain lift. They’re only found in parts of Europe and Asia these days. I think The Hague in Prague has one. The up and down sides are linked as the cars travel on a continuous chain loop with large pulley wheels at the top and bottom, like a vertical conveyor belt. The constant motion, and having to step in and out while the cars are moving, did end a few lives, and cause lots of injuries. Ankle injuries were plentiful, when stepping into a descending car, once the car was too far below the floor. Patience can keep ya safe with getting on or off a car in a paternoster lift, and never ride a car up over the pulley and down the other side. They would jam when people tried it, and they’d get stuck in a difficult to access part of the system. Nice reaction!

A lot of the classic horrors are much better than the modern ones because they rely on suspense and story, not gore, violence and cheap jump scares. While there are 1000s of great horror films, I've compiled an essential viewing list of genre-creating/defining, iconic, impactful horror films in pop culture. I'm talking the BIG films that everyone on the street knew about. These films inform every other horror film/trope, and mostly spawned franchises.
