EA games on Genesis were generally some really quality stuff! One thing I forgot though was that some of the cartridges didn't work on the later models of the Genesis (when the TMSS stuff came in to play.) I "rediscovered" this when I got a model 2 Genesis a few years ago. I bought a few copies of Populous, thinking there was something wrong with them, before I remembered this! 😂 Populous, Budokan and Zany Golf were 3 titles that I knew wouldn't work on the later consoles.

You're right. When doing research on the video, I originally didn't see any proof that there were unlicensed versions of EA games. However, I recently found that there are two Zany Golf ROMs, one that doesn't work on TMSS consoles, and one that does. So that tells me there are unlicensed versions.

It had something to do with Sega acquiring 2K Games studio, 2K Games at the time are known for their superior sports titles and their NFL license are considered 5x better than EA's own Madden NFL series. This is why EA are so butt-hurt during the Dreamcast era that they threaten Sega that if Sega goes through with acquiring 2K Games for the Dreamcast then EA will not support the Dreamcast when it launch as they don't want to share the NFL license on the same platform as 2K Games. Sega went through anyways and EA left the Dreamcast in the dust. Not sure why they had issue with just 2K Games when Midway (known for their fun arcadey NFL Blitz series) also had the NFL license at the time too.

Sports and arcade ports were what Sega really shined on. Not to say it didn't have a few good RPGs and other genres, but I always loved Sega because of the arcady feel. But alas, compatibility ended there as all three of them had different way of processing graphics and music. Considering that all 3 companies were becoming underdogs in late 80s and early 90s, one might wonder what would happen if they somehow combined their strength to have more interchangeable software.

Nintendo had the market share. They acted like it was a monopoly and the Genesis hurt them quite a bit. American publishers were more willing to go with Sega mostly because their censorship rules were easier (but no porn games), and publishers weren't tied to exclusively releasing games for Sega. Eventually, Sega had to give in to EA (and later Accolade) just because there was little they could do about it. They tried suing Accolade, but settled out of court and they got a similar deal. Acclaim started releasing games for both systems. This started Nintendo's fall from the top.

@ShanetheFreestyler8 ай бұрын
I'd say back then, EA actually were the _good guys_ in a sense. They may have went behind SEGA's back to reverse engineer the Genesis, but that allowed them to get a better deal. Something like this would've never worked against Nintendo at the time because of how big they were. While understandably Nintendo didn't want to make the same mistakes Atari did, not allowing third-party cartridges did meant that some Famicom games couldn't have been brought to NES without being reprogrammed to Nintendo's own mappers if at all. EA not having to worry about that for the Genesis meant they could use whatever cart they needed. Shame nowadays EA is one of the worst video game studios in the industry, but it's like Harvey Dent said in The Dark Knight, "You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become a villain." As for Road Rash, that's definitely one of my favorite EA franchises of all time! (Although it wasn't until Road Rash on PS1 that I was introduced to the series.) One of my favorite parts about most Road Rash games, besides the combat, is the fact you don't respawn on your bike after a wreck, (except in RR64 where you do, and Jailbreak where you can by pressing △), and actually have to run back to your bike! Not only that, but you also don't need to be on your bike in order to cross the finish line! Sometimes, it's better to hoof it than to get your bike back. For example, you get thrown off just feet before the finish, it might take less time to run there instead of getting back to your bike. Also, if your bike is totaled, you're only declared "wrecked" if you return to your bike, unless it fell into some water; in that case, just run! It's highly likely you might get busted, but the ticket is always cheaper than the repair, which is somehow always free if you finish a race without wrecking! (Yay for video game logic!) One more bit of Trivia: Lotus Turbo Challenge on the Genesis is actually a port of Lotus Turbo Challenge 2 on the Amiga, and Lotus II: RECS is a port of Lotus III: The Ultimate Challenge. Top Gear, (no relation to the BBC series of the same name), released on the SNES on the same year as Lotus II/III, is the spiritual successor to the Lotus series, being produced by the same developers and featuring a similar engine. Unfortunately, there was no track editor this time. Oh, and Top Gear itself would get a spiritual successor in Horizon Chase, this time by different devs, but featuring Barry Leitch returning as composer, providing remixes of Top Gear music tracks for the game.

I'd love to see this channel attempt a video at determining the actual facts about the infamous Nintendo exclusivity contract. The common narrative is "Nintendo barred 3rd parties from making any games for other systems", but is this true? There actually were some licensed NES 3rd party companies that made games for the Atari 2600, 7800, SMS and others, companies such as Activision, Parker Bros and Absolute Entertainment. Could it be that Nintendo just had exclusivity on specific games and not the 3rd party devs themselves? There is the boring business reason that the 7800 and SMS were just not selling enough to entice much 3rd party development. It was an investment to learn a competing system and risk selling games for them. Nintendo was a very safe bet given the huge system sales.

EA really did wonders on the Genesis. It's kinda of a shame it never quite delived up to the same par on SNES most of the time. You could always tell its SNES versions of games were really just downgraded Genesis titles that never fully took proper advantage of the specific capabilties there. But there were definitely some EA bangers on Genesis. Road Rash is one of their titles where it would be interesting to see what could be achieved on SNES if pushed fully. Those apparently scaling sprites probably would have been impossible on SNES, I think, but I'm confident the rest could have looked, sounded and controlled even better if handled properly.
@juststatedtheobvious96338 ай бұрын
Plenty of games faked sprite scaling. If Road Rash worked on 8-bit, how was SNES a bridge too far? The question is whether it would sell enough copies to be worthwhile?
@inceptional8 ай бұрын
@@juststatedtheobvious9633Well, I think it could do a decent job, but I think the thing with the scaling there is that it looks like actual smooth and possibly real sprite scaling on Genesis, whereas on SNES I expect it would just be a bunch of frames. Although, with enough ROM space and good management of VRAM, it's possible those could look pretty much as smooth as real sprite scaling anyway. It might even be that's what Genesis is already doing for all know, as it definitely doesn't have built-in sprite scaling. But, either way, I'd have been interested in seeing a SNES version that pushed the system across the board. If it had come out back in the day and actually met the kind of top tier Nintendo/Rare quality and polish standards, I expect it would have been very well received.

@@inceptional Genesis is doing real sprite scaling in software; it's why the frame rate's... interesting.
