I doubt Vance attended his funeral. As for him being “fired,” he was removed from the show, but it had nothing to do with drinking. He failed the Desilu physical, which meant the studio couldn’t insure him if he would’ve been too ill to continue his role. They hated to let him go. As for Desi Armaz being a director, that wasn’t until the last season of their one-hour shows (1959-60).

William Frawley remained with the I Love Lucy shows and hour shows. It was when MY THREE SONS moved to CBS in 1965 that he was replaced by William Demorest due to insurance complications with Frawley.
@LindaHull-le1st3 ай бұрын
Thank you for posting that. I didn't know about his bad health.
@sardu553 ай бұрын
Frawley was let go for health reasons (which affected his performance) not from I Love Lucy but from 'My Three Sons' in 1965. He had played 'Bub' on it for 5 seasons. He wasn't given a physical per se but an examination as a preliminary checkup for insurance. Studios had rules for insuring actors that are in place to cover the owners financially in case an actor has to leave for health reasons, and the check helps specify what those would be. Frawley was having issues remembering his lines and physically moving around the set. But what killed it was his inability to interact with the other actors. The owners of the series ordered him to take daily blood pressure readings to monitor him because they thought he was going to drop dead at any time. His bp was very high. Letting him go was a simple matter for the owners; they just stopped writing him into the episodes. Frawley showed up each Monday morning to work but had no lines. No one bothered to tell him he'd been canned. Nice way to treat a guy. Finally, Fred MacMurray took him aside and told him, diplomatically, that he'd been replaced. MacMurray ensured Frawley was paid thru the end of the season, per his contract. So, at least he was a good guy. Finally, just for the record, if an actor failed a 'for performance contracts' physical the actor had to be released as that situation made it difficult for the producers to get general production insurance, meaning that if the show was taken down by some health-related situation, they would be liable for any contract driven money/costs. Although most weren't happy about it, Frawley being removed was the right thing to do, as he died only months later. But, as Desi Arnaz said, 'it would have been nice if they had let him ride off into the sunset in the saddle'.

Once again, for the last time, there is absolutely no evidence anywhere that she was at his funeral. I've read numerous books on Lucille Ball, I Love Lucy, DesiLu, and many biographies. And there is not one mention of her attending. She hated him, which is why she refused to be on the Lucy Show when he made his last TV appearance there. She lived on the East Coast and would not have flown out just for that. Even the old newsreel of his funeral has no mention or picture of her being there. Most of these "surprise" videos are produced with no fact checking. It's just to get you to click on it, unfortunately.

I agree with most of what you wrote. However, Vance didn't refuse to be on that fourth season episode of The Lucy Show. She left the show at the end of season three and moved East. Vance appeared in one fifth season episode and two sixth season ones. In season four, Ball was trying to find a new second banana (Ann Sothern as the Countess) because Vance wasn't coming back as a regular. Frawley's appearance was just a cameo that wasn't even specifically written for him.
@Biggbarr2 ай бұрын
@@mdstudio-gp1yp Actually, he was invited back by Lucy, mainly because Vance would not be there. She knew Vance would not do a scene with him, and this was basically a last goodbye for him. Al Jolson's signature song "My Mammy" was written for Frawley, but Jolson made it his own. He played Jolson's manager in "Rose of Washington Square" with Tyrone Power and Alice Fay. He also made a forgotten gem which you can watch on KZbin free "Harmony Lane" a biography of the "Father" of American music,Stephen Foster. Frawley played the great minstrel man, E.P. Christy. Another coincidence is that Al Jolson also played E.P. Christy in the movie "Swanee River" with Don Ameche. Then again,another coincidence. The song Swanee written by none other than George Gershwin, (lyrics by Irving Caesar) was recorded by Jolson who heard it at a party and brought it into one of his plays t the Winter Garden NYC. It was the biggest selling song in Gershwin's career,earning him enough money to do what he needed to do to get him to his next level, but he never earned more from any other of his compositions (The power of Jolson). No Swanee, then most likely we would have never heard of Gershwin. "Swanee", not to be confused with Fosters, "Way Down Upon the Swanee River" (Old Folks at Home). My 2 cents.

I always liked Fred and Ethyl better than Lucy and Ricky ... wonderful portrayals!

Vivian's "Champagne for everyone!" infamous remark is pretty silly. You can repeat any rumor on the internet and it becomes true. If you ever want to really know if a quote is true, ask these questions: where was it said, when was it said, to whom was it said, were there witnesses when it was said? Clues that something is fake: "It was reported that..." "So-and-so is quoted as saying..." The more vague, the odds are it's fake.

He started a vaudeville act with his younger brother in 1889 although he was born in 1887? What?

Why does William Frawley remind me so much of Carroll O'Conner's character Archie Bunker? They could almost b e clones of each other. I remember William Frawley in John Waynes WWII movie; "Fighting See Bees".

Interesting - I don't relate Fred to Archie in any way.
