I have a 'vintage' FM3 (no headphone LOL) and an FM9. I love everything about the Fractal ecosystem. The editor is phenomenally powerful. Just when I think I know a lot, I learn even more about the capabilities of the unit. I spent the last couple of days reworking my main presets and squeezed even more capability from each unit. Also, Fractal continuously adds more value with new firmware updates.

They are and Helix too missing the one Amplifier that I Like an Awful lot. The Magnatone, and all need the pitch changing Vibrato. They all have the volume changing and harmonic/bass,treble changing vibratos which are actually misnamed (thanks to leo, F) The pitch changing is the only REAL VIBRATO. Now sooner or later they will show up in TONEX if they have not already and NAM, but those of course are not Modellers per say. Just my Wish list, and my deciding factor to which system I will buy into. GREAT VIDEO, as always JOHN.

Hi John, Lovely playing as always. I went through the videos of Boss Gx-100 from you where you seem to be impressed by the tone you get. Could you tell if it is possible to get the same tone from Gx100 and fm3? Asking this question considering the fact that both are digital modellers and technology has improved a lot. Looking forward to your opinion.

Something I never hear you talk about is latency. I got a QC but hated it because the latency was too distracting. In contrast, i love my hx stomp for its low latency output (thanks for the rec!) hows the latency on the FM3. I know Jens Larsen uses one for great jazz tones
@johnnathancordy Жыл бұрын

@georgesabitpol Жыл бұрын
If latency is an issue, go for a boss gt1000 ( core is ok too ). I had helix, HX stomp, boss gt1000 and also fm3, the boss gear stands out there. For some reasons I am very sensitive to latency and just don't enjoy it if it is too noticeable
@matt_greene Жыл бұрын
@@georgesabitpol same here! thanks for the rec. how does the boss sound?
@georgesabitpol Жыл бұрын
@@matt_greene I love it for clean or edge of break up type sound, the amp model natural is really amazing as well as the modded one. The best way to get a lot of responsiveness is to put the master all the way up. The models really come too life that way but it can be tricky to manage the levels between patches . For dumble tone it high gain you would need to go for helix or fractal. With modelers I find it crucial to block frequencies bellow and above 50 Hz and 6000 Hz so not too have a silly fizzy tone

You know 312 different AMP models is great, but: a) I'd rather have 4 or 5 really good amps representing the different options. b) the CAB is more defining for the tone than the AMP is, so make sure you have great CAB models and c) you spend so much time dialing in tones, that you forget about music. It sounds great in your ears when noodling, but not in the mix. O BTW I have had the AXE FX II for many many years now, and I see no reason to upgrade to anything else. So buy one of those 2nd hand which is a cheap option to have 90% of the great abilities of Fractal AMP modeling.
@johnnathancordy Жыл бұрын
I'm not really sure 4 or 5 amps would represent very much at all given that they're all very specifically modeled from their real world counterparts or schematics? In general the more amp models in there, the more likely folks are to find the modeled version of what they'd be using in real life?
@ianngalbraith Жыл бұрын
That sounds like what BOSS is doing. Fewer, ambiguous, amp models in the flavors one might need, without being specific. Almost went that direction but have no regrets with my FM3.
@axlfruitypebbles Жыл бұрын
Agree with everything here, and I've said the same about my II. But I have to admit that dynacabs is really tempting me after six years with the II.

@@jjc75019 That was the strategy behind the Strymon Iridium which was a great piece of kit which I used for many gigs along with a few of my favorite pedals. The FM3 has more than one issue but this is a nice fix. IMHO they need to release a FM6. So smaller form factor than the huge and heavy FM9 Turbo (that I bought.) The FM6 should have more DSP than the FM9 Turbo and a completely new UI- including a touchscreen and also capture. If they do that, they will easily be the go to modeler. Also, it is 2023. We should finally be able to easily pull up, or search for patches using the names of familiar and popular songs in the unit without having to buy special tone packs. It should be consistent and homogenized throughout the Fractal eco-system. You can call it A.I. or just good old common sense. Since 1900 we could dial up (on a phone) a number and it correlated to a person we knew. It is the same thing really. What is so hard about dialing up a patch that is modeled after a popular song? There needs to be more of this- not just random patches that sort of sound like the song. Rather a dedicated way to pull up, spot on patches that we can play along with. Everything I mentioned is the future of modeling IMHO. Whoever cracks this code will be king. The FM3 will fade into the background over the next couple of years. More focus is going to be on the FM9, AxeFXIII and...their next big thing. I ended up selling my new FM9 Turbo. I loved the tone- they nailed that bit but I hated the UI. I did not lose any money- I have saved it so I can buy another Fractal offering, once they step up their game- UI. A MKII version is not going to be enough. A new and modern UI is in order. I hope they took notes from the QC.
@cbsaulren Жыл бұрын
A lot of the appeal of modelers comes from the ability to dial in an infinite number of tones. I don't think everyone is interested in premade patches to play other people's songs. The editor app seems intuitive enough but I almost never use the built in UI.

@TheCyberMantis Жыл бұрын
FM9 is not huge and heavy. FM9 is the sweet-spot.
@MOAB-UT Жыл бұрын
@@TheCyberMantis I use to think the same...so I bought one which took 1 year on the wait list. I think it is currently the best modeler on the planet- that said, I did find it big and a bit heavy. I know many pro players who leave it home and take their Stomps on the road for this very reason. In the mix, it is hard to tell the difference tonally- unless you are using a kitchen sink preset with crazy effects which is where the FM9 shines. Sweet-spot between the FM3 and the Axe-FXIII, yes, absolutely...for now. The one thing I hated about the FM9 was the 1980's UI. For $1800 I did not want to accept that UI so I sold it- did not take a loss- did not seek to make a profit either. I will buy it again once Cliff comes around and updates the UI. I would love to see a slightly smaller and lighter form factor, more DSP and a completely revamped UI- including capture and Bluetooth. There is not reason other modelers that cost a fraction of the FM9 have really nice, intuitive UI's and we have to deal with an antiquated UI. Tone is the #1 thing but it is not everything. Even the UI on the Helix and Stomp is much better and easier to edit on the units. FM9-Edit is fine but other than changing between some presets, editing on the unit is a nightmare.
@TheCyberMantis Жыл бұрын
@@MOAB-UT I would never edit on the unit. I would do all my editing on the PC. So that is not a deal-breaker for me. The FM9 is certainly smaller and lighter than a typical 100-watt tube head + a pedal board.
