Aside from being contented with what we have, Filipinos really have big dreams, which mostly are really not for our own selves but for our families, and if we don't achieved or realized those dreams, we'd tell ourselves that God has better things for us. So what really makes us Filipinos really happy is our FAITH in God.

Here, we have this polyanna attitude (forgive the spelling if wrong!😊), it means being able to find the light in the darkness. The Philippines had been taken by different countries in our past for so long, and because of that, we generally trained ourselves to look for the rainbows instead of being depressed or else our ancestors wouldn't be able to fight for our freedom. This I think is why we are happy a lot of times, no matter what happens. Also, many westerners ask, why Filipinos look younger than their age, I think it is also because of this "being happy" almost all the time, because laughter makes people look young. Thank you for this post of yours. Salamat na marami.

The root of frustration is unmet expectations. What I've noticed is that the happiness I feel when a good thing happened without expecting it is way more appreciated than if I feel entitled and expected it. I live by the mantra, do the best you can without pre-empting what should happen but to let things happen. If I did good, something good is bound to happen.

With the influx of foreigners to the PH these past few years, I hope the negative vibes wouldn't rub off on the locals. I dont quite agree with not setting unrealistic expectations though, a lot of Filipinos actually excel in their craft too. I think what really makes the difference is the MINDSET. I noticed that Westerners are easily angered and get frustrated when they dont get what they want. Pinoys generally, aren't raised as brats.

two Filipino popular phrases come into mind....one is " bahala na" and " pwede na yan" that somehow explains the happy mode of Filipinos.... bahala na actually is originally " Bathala na"... a prayerful expression leaving everything beyond one's control to GOD...but behind this phrase is another Filipino phrase that dispel its fatalistic attitude ..that is " nasa tao ang gawa ..nasa DIYOS ang awa.... as to " pwede na yan"...this I think is a double-edged sword.... on one hand it often leads to being content with inferior quality.... on the good side is the attitude highlighted by the California expat... the attitude that makes every Filipino contented with what is available and what gets them going and always resilient

We all grew up with these natural calamities so minor inconveniences aren’t much of a struggle. I think, it’s also the fact that mental health is still a taboo topic and not a lot has an access to be checked by a professional, but if you talked to a Filipino, we really do struggle alot. Just with everyday expenses alone, its so hard to live. But we have this innate mindset that “if I won’t work, then who’s going to provide?” So we tend to invalidate our sadness once in a while, then get ourselves rewarded whenever there’s a chance.

Plus Five Boxes that I will store with my Son. Visiting Relatives later this week to pass heirlooms on. Six to Eight Months after arriving, I can either return to the US & reclaim my "stuff"... or ship Balikbayan Boxes to a Philippine address.

Its just that we lower our expectations even if we set a high goal. its about compassion. understanding what could happen along the way while you are trying to reach your goal. thus, it is ok if you were not able to at this time. just get up and try again. its ok. we can be contented of what can only be delivered despite of what has transpired along the way to get it.

One thing I noticed about the Philippines is while many maybe living below our living standards most of them have good food to eat. The lifestyle is just so much slower and peaceful. And you can feel it cause the days feel so long and relaxed.
