Tom Hanks is hardly a sex symbol. He's no Brad Pitt. You never hear about him getting drunk, making a fool of himself, or having love affairs. You never see him at all in the gossip mags. Even he admits he's a bit of a nerd. Yet somehow he's made an extraordinary career out of being ordinary. His movies have made billions. Just the name "Tom Hanks" on a billboard can guarantee success. In fact he's the biggest earner of them all. Add a couple of Oscars, who said nice guys don't come first.

For clarity, this interview was 14 years ago! The description isn't clear. I was wondering why Tom looked so young, lol. Tom is a huge Typewriter aficionado. He personally owns dozens of them. He frequently responds to typed fan mail from one of his own typewriters. To illustrate how genuinely nice and real Tom is, I know of fan who recently gifted him a wrist watch manufactured by Remington Rand of typewriter fame. Later, Tom was spotted actually wearing the watch at an event. How wonderful is that!

EXCELLENT INTERVIEW; Tom's a "real human " with "realistic goals" during times when others' main goals were/and are/ to become famous stars, rich and put themselves on a pedestal , don't you think? We hope that SOMEDAY Tom Hanks can "play a major part" in helping the world establish a DAY in memorial to the "Man who invented the typewriter keyboard!" ALL of us would be at such a loss without that invention, no matter WHAT we're typing on! The day they showed to me that Selectric with erasable access, most of us DID put that old typewriter into a storage closet, remember ? Many of us who awakened in the middle of the night or after a vivid dream, ran for that old Smith Carona hoping we wouldn't wake others up by typing; Like to see tom in a film with Keanu Reeves (as viewer above also suggested) create a story ABOUT this man and his contribution to the world! Toy Story 2 gutted me, especially with the song "When She Loved Me," because I knew that's EXACTLY what I was going to experience with my niece as she got older and grew up. Now she's a mom and raising kids who love Toy Story, too, but there's that magical moment burned in my heart as she excitedly related everything to her mother after we saw it, talking about how Mr. Potato Head took off his eyes to spy over the window. I knew I was going to lose her as a little girl who thought everything we did was magical, but at the same time I would NEVER lose her, because that was a permanent memory no one could take! THAT's what Tom Hanks helped give us and makes him so beloved!

The fact that he’s ordinary or “nerdy” in his personal life is a good thing! He’s a good man if being a good person makes you “nerdy ” we all need to be a little more “nerdy” like Tom ❤️

Great memories of this coming out and dance floors packed with people doing the Twist and the Rock Lobster -- twisting all the way down to the ground when the B-52s sang the "down, down" part and staying down until the music picked-up again then jumping back up to start twisting again. Also, the song remained a party standard into the 80s. I went to high school parties in 79 and 80 and danced to it, and at college fraternity parties in 84 and beyond. The B-52s really shook us as did a lot of other post-punk & new wave music in 79. But the B-52s are way, way underrated and underappreciated. I wish you could've experienced 1979 in music.

I'm a baby boomer and grew up watching Jimmy Stewart. Then after Tom Hanks got to be about 35 I realized that Tom Hanks is the Jimmy Stewart of my generation. Such a wide body of work, humorous, fantasy, drama and everything except blockbuster westerns. I don't see him riding a horse in a shootout. It's just not him, but everything else he seems to be. There are those in the comments below that try to disparage both Hanks and Stewart, but I've loved them both.

Just finished reading Tom's latest book which is an education in itself. I think Tom is a prime example of the old fable of the "Tortoise and the Hare": You have to have a pretty thick shell, be slow to anger, have incredible Determination and still the while, be kind to all the people around you who are also working their collective a**es off. The book should be required reading for any one wanting to work in Film.
