Feeling quite weepy today. Just want to say thanks to big Jack and to his home town of Ashington from the Irish guy in Iraq. He gave me some of the very best days of my life. And I could never repay him. Cheers big man. Sleep well.

Thank you for your tribute to a wonderful man. He will be very sadly missed by all who knew him! I have met quite a few fooball players & managers over my working years, even though I know very little about the game. It didn't seem to matter in the least. In fact, I think he may have found it mildly refreshing that I couldn't converse on the subject. Nevertheless, Jack was among the best of people you could ever wish to meet: A large imposing figure, he was always friendly and affable; he had time for everyone and anyone who wanted to stop and chat. He was 'castaway' by Sue Lawley on Desert Island Discs in 1996. The BBC podcast (available now) is well worth a listen!

Jack was a wonderful person. He was a warm Northerner who was a friend of the working man and anti-Fascist. A great advertisement for England.

Anti-fascist in the white working class tradition akin to the kind of men who went to fight against Franco - but nothing like the middle class leftie anti-racist, anti-fascist brigade of today. I think Jack would have thought as that crowd as fascists.

I almost expected to see Jack coaching those kids as well - he probably did off camera! Football will be poorer for his passing. May one of the game's great characters forever rest in peace.
