I know you cannot save them all yourself Jay but so glad to see this one was not only saved but that you took it for yourself! Problem now is I am jealous!! You have some fixing of things to do such as the muffler and brake line you mentioned but so far it sounds good and sure looks good! Cannot wait to see more videos on it as it progresses along! Thank You! Cool! :-) :-) :-) Awesome!

I had over 210,000 miles on my 2.9 Ranger when it needed a transmission rebuild. It didn't fail, just busted out at the seems. I had it rebuilt and drove it another 20,000 miles and sold it for parts. The kid who bought it, did so for the transmission, but continued to drive and beat the snot out of it until it finally threw the timing chain at 280,000. He then pulled the transmission and sold it on - recouping his original price. Good buy my friend!

Congrats on saving it and getting her up and running again. I was sure hoping you were gonna save it and you did and got her running so nice job Jay. Glad you bought too. You can use it for work or something. There are a lot of things you could do to that Ranger like get cleaned up real good, fix whatever needs fixed on it still, get it lifted a little bit, etc. If i had that truck i would do a lot to it. So anyway i cant wait to see what you do with it. Again congrats on saving it and purchasing it. I will be looking forward to future videos. Take care Jay.

Local pick a part has had quite a few vehicles lately I would have loved to have bought :(. They had a CJ7 in there a while back that looked like someone's project, had a new 4.0L I6 crate engine in it, body was in great condition considering it was about 35-40 years old. F250 Lariat 460 4x4 that was in there body was in excellent condition. Really makes me wonder why some vehicles end up in pick a part yards...wouldn't surprise me if many of them would drive out of there if you threw fluids back in them and a battery and fuel.

jay, you made the right choice in buying it. that truck doesn't need a lot of work to fix up and they're starting to become rare on the road now.

The 2.9L is not that bad of a engine. The key is NOT revving the engine at higher RPM's COLD, and keep the oil changed often... like every three to five thousand miles. The return oil galleries get plugged up if the oil is not changed often enough... the same goes for the 2.3L also.

I had a 1989 Ranger. Traded for a 2003 but then when I heard that Ford was going to crap in their pants in 2012 and no longer make the Ranger, I bought a 2010 extended cab Ranger Sport with the 4.0 engine. Actually Ford dropped the Ranger in 2011 and to my way of thinking they had to be out of their minds to do so. I've seen the new "Ranger" from Australia and Japan and I HATE it! Almost as big as the F150, mostly plastic and enough electronic junk inside that you all but need a pilot's licence just to drive the piece of crap. No thank you, I'll keep my 2010 Ranger and just keep repairing it as long as I can find parts to do so. That 4.0 engine is tough as a battle tank and gets really decent gas mileage for a truck.

Cool, I had a Bronco II. Years ago, put locking hubs on it.. It only had 100,000 miles on it but the rocker arms I think had a lot of wear or lifters sometimes lost pressure. It always started , didn't matter how cold it was-30c didn't stop it.

Back when Ford built real trucks that will last forever when properly taken care of. No aftermarket console needed, go pull the console out of an explorer, along with the mounting hardware. It'll bolt right in. I put an explorer console in my 88 Bronco 2. The 2.9L V6 is fuel injected, they don't make a carbureted version of the 2.9L V6. The 2.8L V6 was carbureted and was used in 84 and 85 rangers and bronco 2's. In 86 they went to the 2.9L V6.

I had a Bronco 2 back in the day, ford had a 2.8 a 2.9 and a 3.0 in those trucks. The 3.0 was the one to have, 2.9 next best I had the boat anchor 2.8 that blew the front seal everytime it reved past 3k lol.
@wildbill23c7 жыл бұрын
The 3.0 was never an option in the bronco 2, it was an option in the 90's rangers though...too bad they ceased production on the bronco 2 in 90, would have been great to get one from the factory with the 4.0 in it...people are swapping in the 4.0's and the 302s though.

The bodies on those vehicles are in good shape considering you get snow there and I assume they throw salt all over like they do here. Glad to see the Ranger was saved. They were holding a high value here when Ford stopped producing them. Now that they started making them again value might go down.
@stevevarholy20117 жыл бұрын
South Carolina goes a little light on the salt when it snows because it generally only sticks around 48 hours or so. This winter, Charleston was a mess for days because they didn't have any road salt and it was cold enough to hold the snow and ice for 3 for 4 days.
@wildbill23c7 жыл бұрын
Value will keep going up on the older Rangers because they're a true compact pickup, unlike the garbage they're going to try and sell starting in 2019. The new Ranger isn't compact, its damn near the size of an F150.

That's a nice, straight old truck, it certainly looks like it had an easy life. That engine looks a lot like the European Cologne V6, though with a few tweaks to suit the US market, they were tough old engines as long as they had the oil changed regularly, but I suspect in a truck with 4-wheel drive and an auto it is probably going to deliver quite leisurely performance as they weren't too powerful but had a decent amount of torque. If it is a version of the Cologne engine I wonder if it has the same auto trans that the European cars ran too...
@wildbill23c7 жыл бұрын
Transmission is an A4LD automatic, biggest piece of shit transmission Ford used. Yes, the 2.9L V6 is a Cologne engine, so was the 2.8L Carb'd V6 in the 84 and 85 models. Cologne German built engines were 1.8, 2.0, 2.3, 2.4, 2.6, 2.8, 2.9 and 4.0 litres
@gosportjamie7 жыл бұрын
+William Todd The A4LD isn't that bad, they just require more regular servicing than perhaps the US market was prepared for. I know of plenty of A4LDs that have gone well past 150,000 miles without problems given religious servicing. The lock-up torque converter can be a pain sometimes, but usually a thorough flush and new fluid will get it working OK again. I didn't know there was a 1.8 litre Cologne V6, I guess that might have only been seen in German market Taunuses, or the 4.0 litre, maybe a US-only engine but I can imagine that must be a bit of a torque monster but the rest are all familiar, though it is, perhaps, a bit of a stretch to call the 2.6 a Cologne engine, certainly the version in the RS2600 Capri as pretty much all that shared with the Cologne engine was the basic block architecture, the rest was all pretty different as it was basically a road version of a race engine and then only slightly sanitised for the road as it was only built to homologate the car for touring car racing in Germany...
@wildbill23c7 жыл бұрын
The A4LD isn't as bad behind the 2.9L V6 but in the 4.0L V6's they didn't fare too well at all. I've had 2 vehicles with that transmission and both required rebuilds, one rebuild didn't even make it a year...then again I don't think the transmission shop really knew what they were doing and just put the same cheap ass parts back in. My 88 Bronco 2's A4LD seems to be doing fine, its been about 1-1/2 years since AAMCO did the rebuild on it. The 93 Ranger A4LD was rebuilt by Cottman's Transmission shop...hmm probably why they're no longer in business LOL. Luckily the AAMCO I took my Bronco 2 to had an Ex-Ford mechanic working for them and explained in great detail what they were replacing and upgrading in my Bronco 2's tranny. Lots of junk cheap parts in those OEM transmissions, AAMCO does a rebuild and does upgrades too while they're doing the rebuild to make sure the transmission holds up. I also had them add an auxiliary tranny cooler. Heat kills automatic transmissions and the A4LD is prone to failure so for $250 its cheap insurance that the tranny won't get as hot. The valve bodies in the A4LD's are prone to failing and causing all sorts of problems...mainly you don't go anywhere LOL. You'll start losing gears, or delayed shifts, etc. Once that starts its only a matter of time before it stops altogether.
@gosportjamie7 жыл бұрын
+William Todd I'm not surprised to hear that, the 2.9 is a pretty torquey motor though perhaps not as powerful as people might expect for an engine that size, so I would expect the 4.0 to be very torquey indeed so it's not really surprising it tends to kill A4LDs, the transmission wasn't really designed for anything bigger than the 2.9 and can even be a bit marginal behind 24 valve 2.9s. A lot of what you say applies to a lot of manufacturer-built automatic transmissions from that period. Certainly in Europe that was the period when manufacturers were changing from units made by outside companies such as Borg-Warner to ones made in-house to try to cut costs, forgetting that they were losing 50-60 more years experience of engineering and building autos to save that money. GM did the same, and their in-house autos were much worse, I don't think I've ever heard of one of the type used in their front-wheel drive stuff from that period making it as far as 100,000 miles without needing a full rebuild. You're right, a lot of the original parts in the transmission weren't as good as they might have been in a unit from an outside supplier, and it's not really surprising that most manufacturers have gone back to using units at least developed and engineered by outside specialists, if not actually built by them. Not that most modern autos are much cop, there almost all electronically controlled now and when those electronics go bleuch that's usually game over for the trans. The valve body problems can certainly be reduced by more regular fluid and filter changes, perhaps even more so than the manual says. A friend of the family is on his second 2.9i Scorpio with the A4LD and that's just about to pass 200,000 miles without the trans having been touched beyond servicing. His first, which got written off, was starting to have problems with slurring changes and slipping at 60,000 though, despite having it serviced at the required mileage (36,000 miles.) That one was used for towing though, whereas the current one isn't and it gets fluid and filter changes every 2 years (about 10-15,000 miles...)
