Hello, I’d love to know more about the animal portraits. Were they in natural environments? How could they look so surreal? If I saw those pictures without this context, I’d think they were paintings. So impressive.

My wife was a pretty good photographer in her way. Though she did not like the technical side of it, she had a good eye for pictures. She took a picture of her grandfather years ago. I always said it was the best "personality" picture she ever took. I miss her style in the pictures now.

So if there is a view on digital imaging then I must ask how many of the images at the beginning of the magazine are not digital images? Are they all done on film?

Finally, someone said it out loud. So many photographers using shallow depth of field poorly. Seems like they use it more as a crutch to obscure poor composition than a creative element in of itself in an image.

Thanks Alex - This has bothered me for a long time. Shallow depth of field is a good but much overused technique. It inspires me to use F2.8 to F5.6.

Dear Alex Yes, those are really fine works. Like the portraits, as well as the contrasty black&white images. But what made me think, and feel a bit uneasy, is your thought on shaĺlow depth of field. I love my 105mm f1.4, and my 50mm f1.2 on my portraits, and also on other matters. It makes the out of focus area soft, and gentle, to hide, or make the viewer dream a bit further. :) Maybe that's why my pictures don't make it on KZbin hahaha. Keep up your great work, and looking forward to see you soon again.

Shooting wide open can be useful if it's used correctly. As I'm getting older I'm a bit more drawn to more 'realistic' images, hence the nose to ears thing. Send me a link to your portraits ;)

I know it all just taste, and one should mostly listen to his, or her heart, or eyes. ;) Unfortunately currently I don't have a link to my portraits, since I stopped using social media by meta. :) But I'll pick some, which I could send you by mail, if you don't mind. On a second thought, not sure if they are ready for being shown. 🙈

How about a segment on recommended color photo books- either single artist or compilation? Maybe your top 5 or 10. I have a decent b&w library of classic b&w books, but I am weak on color and l am looking to expand into color more.

Hello from Perth, Australia. Love your video's. Learnt much. Im 76 years old and love my photography. There are a lot of unfounded information recently on AI in photography that is simply negative and unfounded. AI has been used for a while now in processing real images not unreal images. We should research and try and embrace what will enhance our photography not shun it. Can you at some stage run a video on AI and your thoughts on the negative spool that is creating angsiety to photographers. Thank you and look forward to your continued video's. Interesting Comment on the DOF. I was recently thinking to myself that, many Photographer uses out of Fucus bit too much (for my Taste). I understand that as an Artist, you want the Viewer to Focus on a specific Point of your Art, but as a Viewer I like to "explore" a Picture. Do much DOF let me only look at the, so to speak, Point of interest and then I move away. Especially with Portraits that sad for me, because a Person is more than just the Eyes.

Alex, what sort of backgrounds make for good bokeh? More specifically, say in an outdoor portrait situation? A lot of people like what's called bokeh balls, but I find them distracting in portraits (it takes the attention away from the subject).
@ThePhotographicEye
@ThePhotographicEye Жыл бұрын
AFAIK the bokeh balls are coming from specular highlights in the background. So if you want to avoid these, try and find backgrounds that are uniform in lighting. Hope that helps

Recently I purchased a Frames quarterly magazine based primarily on the fact that you showered quite some praise on the content of this publication. I would agree with you in this regard and the fact that a fledgling magazine deserves all the publicity it can get. However, although I was impressed by the content of Frames Magazine, both in terms of the photographs and the text, I think it would be fair to say that the quality of the paper and the print fell short of what a magazine that costs almost £20 by the time it is delivered is not warranted. Part of the enjoyment of browzing through a magazine, particularly a photographic one, is the quality of the paper and the print. You make no reference to this matter in your praise for the magazine. The latter could be improved. Thanks.

Hi Daniel. Thanks for your feedback on the magazine. The issues that I have are well printed on what seems to be pretty weighty stock. It's possible there is a difference between the issues I have an current ones. The reason I don't mention the paper is because I've encountered no issues with it. It feels upmarket. Tomasz is very hands on, so it might be worth reaching out to him directly. Glad you're enjoying the content though.

I actually really disagree with that the images of the birds, cow and chicken feel real. To me they come off too much as a digital canvas painting and not as a photograph anymore. Would like to see the actual raw file and compare. Maybe I'm a bit of a purist in that sense They are beautiful but personally they go too far off of photography.
