Your perspective of completing cards for a point system and downgrade paths is something everyone should take note. It is hard to have a setup for everyone. It depends on how much they spend, but also the categories. But I agree with a catch all card is best for everyone like the Citi Double. Hey Sebby do you still have blog posts for your videos? It is great to read over your video as you got so much content to digest.

Citi Double Cash might not make sense for people with the Chase Sapphire Reserve (with 1.5X portal boost) who also have the Chase Freedom Unlimited (1.5 points per dollar - 2.25% value if used on travel portal). Otherwise I agree that 2% cash back on Citi Double Cash is hard to beat.

Hi Sebby! I use more of a cash back set up now for an immediate reward since I can’t travel much due to COVID. Navy Federal More Rewards AMEX for 3x/3% back on dining, transit, and gas Chase Freedom for the 5% groceries (12 months) and revolving categories, then Navy Federal for 3% on groceries AMEX Platinum 5x for travel, part cell phone/subscriptions (until Dec) and targeted offers (great credits) Apple Card for T-mobile, Walgreens, and apple subscriptions PenFed 2% for everything else I stopped using my Chase Sapphire Preferred since it’s now useless.

I'll never fly United again. I've had way to many issues with them. One time they had me wait 14 hours at the airport only to be told that with connecting flights they usually just upgrade you to a one way. Well I told them when I got to the airport that I was going to miss my connecting flight and they didn't do anything. My family members have also had a lot of issues with them.

If you fly to the Caribbean or Latin America fairly often, or fly AA internationally, the Citi AA cards will probably end up being more useful even if you live in a United or Delta Hub. My family flies AA to the Caribbean a few times per year, but we live in a Delta hub just for example. I should probably go ahead and get an AA cards. Citi has wood for we to get one.

Honorable mention is the us Bank cash plus after your chase setup is done. I'll get 120 dollars a year from just sock drawer the card with my 5% back on internet and streaming and utility bills. 200 back on 1k spend is basic but appreciated and you get 4 months to hit it. Cons low credit limit and utilities can be very restrictive most of my utilities can't be paid with credit card.

@@docsays Indeed! While I do have a few cards like that, I have enough spend and travel to justify it (heck I have a spreadsheet to make sure I'm still getting value out of my Amex Platinum). I think that's one think I like about Sebby, he always talks about making sure you get value out of the card after the sign-up bonus, and that everyone has different situations. Whereas Graham sometimes pushes too hard credit card churning, which isn't feasible for most people.

My ideal set up revolves around points and travel. I agree with Graham on the Sapphire Reserve, Gold, & Freedom Flex, but I also agree with you that his set up is too spread out. I tend to focus more on the 2 most valuable currencies (UR & MR). Therefore, I'd replace the Double Cash with the BBP (which I have). I feel the Amazon Prime cards are a waste of a Chase AND Amex slot. I would replace it with the Ink Cash (again, I have), where I use it to pay for my cable and phone bills as well as buying Amazon gift cards at Staples, which earns me 5x that way. I rather earn 5x UR points & 2x MR points than cash back. Especially since Amex now caps you at 4 credit cards and Chase tightening their approvals, I don't think the Amazon card from either issuer is worth it (my opinion). My ideal set up is: 1. Sapphire Reserve 2. Gold 3. Freedom / Freedom Flex 4. Ink Cash 5. Blue Business Plus I'd add a 6th "wild" card: Freedom Unlimited / Ink Unlimited as a back up to the BBP for places that don't accept Amex.

Great video. Much better than Graham's picks. You went by banks, I would organize it by airport. If you love chase, but live in Atlanta then I'd still want the Amex Delta Gold Card over MPE. I fly out of FLL, so I'm going with CSP, Freedom (Flex now), SW Priority, SW Business Premier. Companion Pass is worth two card slots. Amazon isn't important to me, so I'd go with a hotel card. I've found most value with Hyatt or IHG over Bonvoy.

I think a low spend setup would be ideal. Amex Delta, Amex Hilton, Capital One Venture, Capital One Quicksilver, and Capital Savor all have NO annual fee and you cover hotels, travel, dining, and shopping with no annual fees. However, if you are a high spender 🤑, I would add Amex Platinum. Those six cards should get it all done. You have three Amex cards to transfer points; and Capital One cards to cover travel and dining where Amex is not accepted.

Great video. My setup is based on: frequent business travel, prefer to maximize hotels vs flights. Hence: Hyatt. If I were to start from scratch I'd go for Freedom Flex, Freedom Unlimited, World of Hyatt, CSR, AmEx Plat. I have four of these but was declined for WoH despite high FICO, but that's fine, probably pandemic related, will try again later. Going beyond 5, I will probably add a Delta card later, IHG for road trips or travel where Hyatt isn't available.

I know Alaska Airlines doesn't have many hubs outside Seattle and is why most don't talk about it, but other than that, would you recommend it? It has a low annual fee and free checked bags as well as their yearly companion fare ($129 anywhere Alaska flies). I lean on yes but would rather hear you give your blessings 🙂
@SolidLiquidFox
@SolidLiquidFox 3 жыл бұрын
Their miles are great for aspirational travel on partners. The companion fare is good for Hawaii or coast to coast flights. The best card to earn Alaska miles is probably Marriott Biz in 60K to 25K transfer increments to Alaska miles. Other than that the card is okay for the companion pass.

My 5 would be chase trifecta (ability to accumulate many points and ease of use through portal. Also would rather stretch points further than with business class flights (for instance with Amex MR points). My next two would be hotel cards for long term use with no hassle anniversary nights (Amex Bonvoy (old SPG) and IHG). Could also argue Hyatt but prefer the larger footprint of the former two chains.

Regardless which system you run, I honestly always recommend BCP card not only for the 6% on grocery stories and specialty markets, but also the return protection (Specifically considering Amex Axed that from most cards) and purchase protection makes this ideal every day card for me since I also cook a lot. I get you technically can manage getting anyway from 4%-8% back on grocery from the Gold Card, but the average person, I think BCP make total sense to add to your wallet unless you shop at big box stores, then it doesn't make sense.

Amazon prime: free shipping ihg premier: low cost, quality and wide hotels network united explorer: wide coverage and perks such as united club and free excursion stop csr: wide travel coverage with useful rewards currency freedom unlimited: 1.5x catch-all and can transfer points to csr for higher value Can substitute with other airline or hotel cards based on preference and extravagance. Problem with amex is it’s still not as widely accepted as visa and MasterCard, esp abroad. If getting amex, recommend getting ones that earn points from spend that takes amex easily, e.g., airfare rather than restaurants

I'm a student, but I have an put of state internship, out of state college, out of state girlfriend... so I travel sorta often, but I dont have a spending habit to justify a lot of popular cards. Amex Gold doesn't make sense, because the $120 Uber Eats credit will go unused, it doesn't add value for me. Delta Gold with checked bags, delta plat with a free main cabin companion certificate and global entry, etc. There are a lot of cards where the benefits pay for the fee, and if you were going to spend money to get those benefits, you can get a lot of outsized value without needing to spend a large amount.

Another good video Sebby. If only 5 I think the Chase way works best because better transfer partners than Citi, and much less annual fees than Amex. If you didn't already have the Citi double Cash, I don't know why someone would get it over the CFU. The signup bonus alone gives it a head start that would require tens of thousands of spend for the DC to overcome. For normal spenders, the Amazon card would/should get a slot. The final spot for families should be a hotel card, again for Chase because of transfer ability. Which one would be personal preference. Singles/couples might get better use out of airline card, but again only if fly predominately a single airline.

@@athlon9394 i disagree 1.5x card normally has a SUB. A $150 SUB would need $30k spend for the 2% to break even. And if you have 4 other cards for the most common categories its going to take a while to hit 30k. And at that point you'd be better off churning 1.5% cards instead.

The idea of these are the 5 best credit cards that you will ever need is a huge grey area though. I don't think you will have a card that will ever be something you need, especially since they have the right to change the benefits at anytime now and with the travel ban, most travel cards are rendered useless. If a person uses Marriott alot, then Marriott cards would be perfect or if someone flys Alaska alot, then Alaska card would be the best. It is all based on the person.

Sebby makes good points for those on the points side, but for the people who think that point valuations for airlines are absolutely overvalued ( especially compared to just cash prices on discount carriers, ESPECIALLY domestic flights) and don't use hotels much...I think that's where Graham's side is coming from. The other problem is that the citi premiere card is outclassed in every way by wells fargo propel. ( Same exact purchase multipliers as citi premiere + cell phone and purchase protection for no annual fee, which makes the citi premiere card a terrible card and not be able to reccomended to anyone, aside from the mastercard vs amex issue. ) The problem with replacing the Citi Doublecash with a freedom unlimited in sebby's setup is you're losing .5% on purchases that can't be "caught" by another card. For someone who just can't math out the points on (personal opinion) way too high evaluations on luxury first-class airline partner point exporting. Citi Doublecash( I actually prefer amex blue business cash for the added purchase protection and other amex benefits) - 2% back cash. Your catch all for stores that are local that don't accept american express. Wells Propel - Citi Premiere equivalent with exact same benefits and no AF - wells points are valued fairly for cash redemption. Freedom Flex - 5% categories are golden, plus the benefits on this are awesome Chase Reserve / Preferred - useful only really for point multipliers. ( Personally feel reserve multiplier doesn't offset AF, but to each their own, but preferred most definitely) your 5% store tactical card here ( amazon, best buy, etc)

How come you choose the ihg and Marriot card over the Hyatt? I have all three and think hyatt gives the best roi especially with the discounts they are giving right now on hotel stays.

My complaints: - Why did you highlight hotel cards? Yes, they're keeper cards but is this really an appropriate response to "cards you will EVER need"? - Amex Delta: Who travels with 9 people per trip, everyone checks in together to pay with same card...? - Amex Gold: Yes there's no downgrade path, but if the combination really is all you will EVER need, there's no need to downgrade. - United Explorer: This one seems random to me. Unless you LOVE United, why get this card and pay $95 AF? - Citi AAdvantage: Same thing. Unless you LOVE AA, why get this card? - No new information Overall, these really don't seem like general "5 cards you will EVER need" to me. Graham's vid is more of a catch-all 5 card combo. This response doesn't seem fair, or even address the same topic. Love and watch all your vids, but this one just seems to have Graham Stephen slapped on the title as bait with no new insights. Would have made more sense if you presented your own 5-card combination. Looking forward to the next one!

I think Sebby's point is that customizing the setup for your usage will get significantly more value than getting a generic hodge podge of cards. Also, re: Amex Gold, I'd really encourage you to plug in the actual numbers of your spend from the last year compared to if you used Citi Double cash. The annual fee is pretty tough to offset, considering how hard it is to use a $100 travel **incidental** credit on **one airline only** during a pandemic.
@danh4295
@danh4295 3 жыл бұрын
@@GregCannon7 Definitely agree with you on Amex Gold. I'm team Chase and I'd be only using it on grocery/dining 4x spend, which is attractive, but seriously debating it right now (esp with the current welcome bonus). Incidental credit would be pretty hard to use, not necessarily because of pandemic (I doubt I won't make at least one flight in a year) but because it'll be additional spend I typically won't make. Also very much agree with Sebby's point on diversified point types (UR vs MR). Right now I do groceries on Freedom even though my Citi Rewards+ gives me more, so I can pool it as UR. I've only recently learned about the value of airline partners and started to not see ThankYou points as trash, so something else for me to think about haha... My main point was just that this video seems more customized than a general "5 cards you will ever need".

Enjoyed the video and while I have some of these already, it never occurred to me to use a system approach to optimize rewards. Very informative and thanks. I know you mentioned the benefits of keeping to one family of cards, but are there any situations where it might be useful to use multiple families of cards, especially for people with some in each already? Keep up the good work!

Hello - I have both Chase Saphire and unlimited. However, both card points are not merged and the buying power of unlimited points are less than from Saphire (using them on Chase travel, points from Unlimited are worth 1 where points from Saphire are worth more like 1.5). Is there a trick to combine them and get maximum value?

I dont see the appeal of the Citi Double Cash Card. I prefer a rotating category 5% cash back card (discover, chase freedom flex) augmented with a tiered set % cashback card like PNC cash rewards, Bank of America rewards or US Bank cash plus, the Amazon VISA, and then a points everyday card like Amex Gold and a points travel card

- its a nice for putting all my non-category spend on a 2% card, i.e. utilities, cable, automotive, storage, etc. I easily get 2% on $1200 - 1400 on mthly bills. all other spend goes on higher 3% - 5% category cards like you mentioned.

The appeal of the Citi Double Cash Card is to always be able to get at least 2% back on any purchase you make. Since 5% rotating categories cards will not always have a current category for something you need - think groceries in the quarters where neither Chase Freedom Flex nor Discover it have groceries as their 5% category this makes sure you always get at least 2% rather than the 1% on non-category spend that many cards have.

It sounds like you're referring to the 5/24 rule? If I'm not mistaken, it means you won't get approved for a Chase card if you've opened 5 cards in the last 24 months. That means if you opened any of the cards more than 2 yrs ago, this rule doesn't apply so you're good to go to try and apply for the Chase card. If they're all within 2 yrs though, even if you cancel the JCPenny card, you'll get denied when you apply for the Chase one because of the rule. So either way, for better credit utilization and more diverse kinds of credit, I think it seems worth to hold onto the card (even if you don't want to use it much), and keep a small recurring purchase on it to keep it active, esp if it has no annual fee ^^ edit: applied -> opened in the 5/24 rule
@Rin-fx6em

Oh also just realized, it’s important to note that you’re not limited to 5 cards! I think this video and Graham’s describe 5-card setups as a way to talk about cards that will efficiently cover a lot of bases, work well together, and bring you value with reasonably low effort (maintaining 5 cards isn’t too bad). But you’re totally free to adapt this however you like and apply for as many as you like, as long as it fits your situation and goals! I feel like I remember watching a video where Graham said he has like 15+ hahaaa
