"Wear what you want" has been like an epiphany to me lately. I always bought clothes that I wanted to wear but never actually wore them. I was saving them for the "right" occasion, and what I mean by that is I was taking in to account what everyone else would be wearing around me so that I fit into whatever group I was going to be with. It dawned on me a couple of months ago that by letting the crowd dictate what I was wearing I was allowing strangers/coworkers/family members, etc., to dress me to the point that I was spending my life not feeling like myself. Kind of like getting dressed in someone else's closet and then feeling uncomfortable and resentful about it. I don't know why I didn't make those connections before but once I realized what I was doing it was easy to stop and dress only for myself. I can't overstate how much better I feel.

What if you don’t “get there”. What if you decide that right here, right now, this is EXACTLY where your weight and body should be? I’ve been 25 lbs over what my favorite weight is since hitting menopause. I’ve lost 15. I’ve become obsessed over those last 10 lbs. To the point of working on it a full year!! I finally decided to take a 3 month diet “eat at maintenance” break, and then try again. If it doesn’t come off this time, I’m going to just listen to my body, that since menopause maybe it does not want to be that thin. Will I be happy about that?. No. Will I be ok with it? Yes. Sometimes, it just is what it is.

This was really great Erin. I loved 3 and 5 especially. I’ve been trying to sit on potential purchases a little bit longer to see if it’s something I need or an impulse buy. I think this is something critical especially with the bargain bin. You think, “Oh if I don’t get it now it’ll sell out and then I’ll miss it!” Just giving myself an hour or so to think about it can help me determine whether I need it or not. And it’s not even limited to clothes. It’s been saving me $$. And I thought 5 was so important. Going outside of your comfort zone just a little and wearing what you want can definitely make life more enjoyable. I bought a tulle skirt and have already worn it once. I thought it was only for something special, but it’s really fun. Even to the grocery store, makes life a little more lighthearted. Thanks again for your inspiration. BTW I loved the photos you shared, so beautiful!

I so appreciate your channel, Erin! I am 63 and I have found with added years comes more attitude that I’m going to wear what pleases me. As America continues its decent into more casual, aka slouchy, I have maintained my classic style and appreciate it more than ever. It’s my form of ‘rebellion’ - ha! I like dressing up and will continue to do so. It makes me feel good. As for the numbers, with vanity sizing that started so many years ago to feed our egos, it’s clear that numbers haven’t really meant anything in a long time anyway. It’s good to know your inch measurements for an accurate fit if you buy things on line, but no, the numbers in my closet go from 2 to 10 and they all fit!

Awesome video! Best place to get to as a woman is embracing and dressing for the body you have and feeling wonderful in your clothes because they actually fit properly....because you bought the correct size, fit and style for YOU! That alone will make you feel better about yourself. Not to be misconstrued with giving up fitness and nutrition goals. I've been less fit, more fit or really fit (but not completely unfit) and I full on recommend learning to accept and love all of those versions of yourself younger than I did and dressing for them as required. You'll waste less time disliking your body and no money can ever buy that feeling! Add to this the classy strategic showing of skin, bargain beware and wear what you love, this video nails it Erin!

I love this! I recently lost a LOT of weight and have been using your advice to rebuild my wardrobe. I have literally had to replace everything in my closet (including shoes). Talk about a good excuse for a style reboot! (But also very overwhelming trying to start from nothing and build a closet without going broke😖) Some advice I would like to share-if someone is struggling with weight and feeling terrible like I was, finding a doctor that will listen is critical. I finally found a doctor willing to test me for an autoimmune disease, and getting the right diagnosis and treatment has changed my life. On the style rules: I can’t emphasize enough how important fit really is. In the process of rebuilding my closet, I have found brand sizes varying wildly. I am anything from an x-small petite/4P to a medium petite/10P depending on the brand all in the same day of trying on clothes. Bra sizes too-brands really vary a LOT, so really assessing how they fit regardless of what size the tag says is critical. If it doesn’t fit right, I don’t buy it. And on the bargain front, it is so true! I love a clearance sale, but if I wouldn’t pay full price for it, I don’t buy it. I look at the sales to find bargains on things I want but can’t stretch the budget to buy at full price. 1 style “rule” I live by: the right undergarments for the outfit are critical. Bad undergarments can ruin the nicest clothes, and the right ones can make a t-start and jeans look perfect.

First of all, YEA for #5!! As a woman of a certain age, I have finally embraced not caring/paying attention to sizes. Size is just a number! I go for comfortable, flattering fit now - no matter what the size is. When I first started to embrace this idea, I actually cut off the size tags of some of my clothes - a mind game, I know, but it helped!! Thanks for the inspiration and joy, Erin!

Yes and no. Yes, size is just a number, and even varies from brand to brand, but our state of mind still depends on said number. I am a short woman already wearing a size 18, took me years to accept the 18 as “just a number” - and I have never been skinny or a size 4 or anything. But because of perimenopause changes, and despite being careful and mindful, my body is currently changing big time and I feel it shouldn’t be long before I have to buy a size 20. And that’s a whole new psychological step here, going from “1” to “2”... very hard

At 67 I've learned to be confident in what I wear or I don't wear it, whatever "it" is. I've discovered recently how much I adore style/details reminiscent of the 1940's. The key is to keep the clothing updated, clean lines, chic, and classy. Also, I'm wearing lots of neutrals and mixing up the pairings. I'm even wearing neutrals that aren't in my color palette. I can make them work by using accessories or keeping my not best color on the bottom half. Confidence is truly everything!!

My favorite style "rule" for myself is also not wearing I'll fitting clothes, and I couldn't care less what the number size is! My favorite bootcut jeans come from a discount store ($14), and although I truly wear a 10, they are a numbered size 8, but they look like a size 6 because they fit so well. They are a dark wash, have just the right whiskering, and are durable. Who cares what the numbered size is when it's sewn inside the jeans? Nobody but me knows what it says anyway.

They are all my favorites- such timeless and thoughtful tips to consider... however, the message behind “getting the risky piece and seeing where it takes you” was moving, you are so genuine sharing so much of yourself with your daughter as well. And, getting dressed each day and wearing what makes you feel amazing is such a simple gift to give ourselves- the effort is little compared to the boost of confidence it brings. 🌷

I think my favorite fashion guideline is wearing whatever I want that I feel comfortable in hopefully amazing in. I've put on some pounds as well and have had to buy some new jeans. I got a pair of bootcut which I would consider to be flares, but they are calling them bootcut now. I also got a pair of straight legs. Hopefully, those will get me through until I lose the weight. Of course, I've had to buy new tops and blouses. Mostly staple items like I said, just to get me through. Your daughter looked so excited to have a dress like yours and I think that will be a moment in time that she'll not ever forget! Nor will you! Such wonderful experiences you're having! I love it! Thank you for all you do for us. I truly appreciate you! XOXO!

After joining a swap wardrobe, I have found out that depending on brand, cut or even fabric, I range anywhere from a xs to a large! But I used to really be hung up on numbers, just like you describe.

I definitely follow your style “rules”….but, getting to this point at 50 has been quite a mindset transition (my 20 year old daughter loves it…she can borrow many of my items to make them work with her style as well….age is just a number). My biggest obstacle now is that I work remote….I exercise/yoga pre-work, mid-day, pre-bed….so, wearing much other than leggings/sports bra/jacket on weekdays is a true challenge….I just cannot justify the effort to change back/forth….and by the evening, I just resign myself to the comfy look. However, I do feel sexy, fashionable, young and fit! But, I very much miss the rest of my closet. Love your videos and insight 💕

I so agree with you. Do not get caught up in the size number. I am buying 2-3 pairs of jeans in different sizes to accommodate my menopausal ebbs and flows. This really helps my confidence. Thank you for your great style tips. Cheers 😉 🌷

I wear what flatters me, what fits, what I feel comfortable in, what matches the occasion. I wore tea length dresses to my daughter's and my son's weddings. Weddings were outdoors. I wanted to dance and party! I work at home now, but I dress in nice blouses or tops (no one sees my jeans or leggings on video). Travelling to Ireland in Fall. Ireland is casual. Jeans, layers, and one pair of nice dressier slacks. Nice new Boots and walking shoes, that's it. I am 68 and all my life loved fashion! I am often told I look late 50's, that is so nice! I stay out of sun and have good genes. Also, life is joy! Put a smile on, it is your BEST accessorie!

Oh my goodness. All these things apply to me right now. Just yesterday I was wearing a top that is now loose and I had to keep pulling it up. I didn’t want to let it go because it was one of my favorites, but now makes it feel a size too large. There are also days when I just feel like wearing workout clothes and times I want to wear jeans or whatever. When I follow that feeling is when I feel comfortable and confident that day.

I love these! Great job Erin. I’ve been following quite awhile. I now get carded for not looking “old” enough! Thank you Erin!,, I’m now technically a Senior at 60 and Ive been turned away from Senior only shopping hours and I’ve had to show my ID! My rule to share…It’s none of my business what other people think of me… I try to be a conduit and not a container. I consider respectfully and then let things go and only hold what feels good to me. Great Video.

Thank you Erin! I’ve never been a stickler for following style rules but have had a hard time dismissing that little voice in the back of my head that I’m breaking a rule. These guidelines make so much more sense and will be my new rules to style by. My favorite rule is wearing what fits. I just received a style box this week and there was a coat that I absolutely loved, but it was too small for my broad shoulders. I grudgingly sent it back because I knew that, if I had kept it, every time I wore it, the I’ll-fitting shoulders would nag at me and I wouldn’t feel completely confident. Thanks for challenging me to shift my thinking to open myself up to so many more fashion possibilities.

Hi Erin. Thank you for a great video. I am glad that I am not the only one wearing what I like at any age. I am 63 years old and I dress classy and elegant every day and I wear pastels and light colors in my basic trousers or skirts and get a lot of compliments. My shoes are from Europa art, and all are heels, I don't wear flat shoes as they are not comfortable for my feet. I don't feel like I am in my sixties, I have a young mind set, and live for each day.

Good point. I'd say less is more, I always try not to look like a Christmas tree or an advertisement poster. And my second rule may not be popular, but I think blue denim is not office appropriate, no matter what the dress code is (but just like I said, it's just my oppinion 🤷🏻♀️ )
@ylcalif3681 Жыл бұрын
Another rule to add to the list: 1) Think about which clothing style best illustrates YOU (today) at a glance . . . you don't want your outward clothing messages to conflict with your inner self, intentions/mood/personality. Your clothing messages will change daily according to your mood and/or the event. That's why each woman wears an ever-changing range of styles (her signals to the world at that particular moment) I'm mostly classic + Boho + with a respectable bit of edgy
@isolinaaustin11082 жыл бұрын
Yes I wear what ever I want. I’m the same way if I fill good in it I’m going to wear it. Sometimes these stye rules can age us. You have nothing to worry about Erin you look great.😊
